Chapter 38 - An odd expression

There was a silence at this. Somehow Idril knew they were talking about her.

"Fine. Ignore me, as you always do." Kate spoke again. "But do you really need to? There is no one here to hear us. Just tell me the truth. Is she really the one as they are saying?"

There was nothing but silence again. Then she heard Feanor speak.

"Yes. So I will tell you this, stay away from her."

"You haven't told her yet?" she heard Kate ask him and curiosity stopped her feet.

"There is NOTHING to tell." She heard Feanor's clipped refusal. She could tell from his voice that he was angry.

"Are you sure? You don't want her to know? Why? Are you afraid she'd think you are a psycho?" Kate replied with her own venom. "I thought you to be one when I first came to know."

"Did you, now?" Feanor was still coldly angry.

"Yes. Made me want to punch that ridiculously handsome face." Kate's voice came full of anger and bitterness. "While everybody was busy pointing fingers at me for ruining their golden boy's life, the golden boy himself was obsessing like a psychopath."

"You'd know."

"Oh yes, I would." Kate sounded furious now. "Because I dealt with one for a long time. "

"No you didn't. your memory must be weak, Kate. It wasn't long, it was extremely short, not worth mentioning."

"It was a long time for me, not you. It was my entire childhood."

Idril heard a chair scrap.

"Stop it, now. I paid the price too, Kate. The price of letting you be my friend." she could hear the menace in Feanor's voice, something she had never heard before. It sent chills down her spine. "There is no point in rehashing the past. Please don't approach me ever again."

Then she heard footsteps going away from her.

Idril stood there til she heard Kate leaving the house too. Then she walked slowly out, her already befuddled mind confused and for some reason uneasy.

She headed towards the party. He saw Feanor waiting for her at the table. He smiled when she went to sit by him.

"Hey, where have you been?"

"I went over to the loo."

"Aren't you hungry? Here, have some." A plate of food was shoved up at her nose. The delicious smell reminded her she hadn't eaten anything since this morning, so she settled herself down for lunch.

It was a good thing she put food in her system, because that seemed to clear her mind. They were joined by many others at their table. While Feanor got busy with conversing with them, she sat quietly and started to think about what she had heard.

Apparently, Kate and Feanor had been involved in the past. Something bad must have happened which had made Kate look like the bad guy but in reality it was Feanor. Also, there was some secret involving her which Kate had been taunting to Feanor to tell Idril. She didn't know what but what got her was how furious Feanor had sounded when they spoke about her.

She realized there was so much she didn't know about this man she had been living with for the past few weeks. His family, places and people he had grown up with she knew nothing of. Idril decided to find out what Feanor and Kate had been talking about. And what better opportunity to then at a wedding full of people with information about them both.

Idril made an excuse and left the table and went over to where the dance was still going on. Then she looked around searching for someone who would be willing to talk to her about Feanor and Kate.

Someone poked her from back. She turned. It was the groom.

Peter Fraiser was almost identical to Feanor except he was blond. Also, he had lesser laugh lines around his eyes, but had the same calm expression as his brother. He stuck out his hand.

"Hello. You must be the elusive girlfriend of my brother everyone is talking about." He had a thick Scottish accent. "Nice to meet you Idril. Hope you are enjoying."

"Yes very much. Thank you. It was a beautiful ceremony and Amanda seems great. You are a lucky man." Idril shook his hand politely.

Peter's gaze went to the dancer floor at the mention of his new wife where she was dancing with her father. He softly said, "Yes, I sure am." he looked back at her.

"My brother seems to be one too. He finally found you."
