Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Tara

I struggled to open my eyes due to the bright sunlight. I saw myself in an ocean blue room, with two bookshelves, a empty closet and a working desk. Why was I here? I held my head which felt dizzy and painful and felt bandages around my head. The door opened and a woman came into the room. She looked like she was in her late-thirties, with her deep brown hair and a slender figure.

"How do you feel now, dear? Do you need anything?"

"Where am I?  How did I get here?  And most importantly,  who are you?"

The woman gave a short laugh as she said," Tara,  I'm Elaine Roberts.  My husband, George, and my son, Luke, brought you back home two days ago and told me that you were found in his company's van,  freezing.  So, we decided to take care of you until you recover."

'Two days? I was here for two days?' I thought to myself. I have them the burden to take care of me.  I was an orphan technically.  Ma and Pa had left the world, Leilani was separated from me,  I had no one else and I was alone.

"Wait... how did you know my name?" I asked Elaine. I just realised that she called me with my name earlier.

"It's on your locket, dear." I looked down at my locket. It was my 14th birthday gift from Ma and Pa. It had my family picture in it.  I opened the locket and stared at the picture.  It was taken when I was five. Leilani,  who was just two years old at that time,  was sleeping on Ma's  lap and I was showing my toothy grin towards the camera and Ma and Pa were laughing at me.  We were such a happy family until Joseph took that away from me. I could feel tears streaming down my cheeks uncontrollably.

"Tara,  are you okay?" Elaine asked me,  feeling concerned.

"Ma and Pa  were dead three days ago,  my sister is somewhere and I don't know her whereabouts.  I'm all alone!" I sobbed harder.

"I'm so sorry to hear that,  Tara.  But don't you say that.  Your parents may be gone but they still live in your heart.  They will always be watching and guiding you from above." Elaine consoled me as she wiped off my tears and gave me a hug.  Her words did soothe me for a while.

"I'll let you rest a little longer.  Let me know if you need me." She walked out the she room and closed the door. I got up and walked around the room.  I just didn't know what to do.  I opened the window and felt a little better to have a little of fresh air and the warmth of the sunlight. 'I have to move on.' I said to myself. I grabbed The Catcher In The Rye,  written by J. D.  Salinger and started reading it.  Why?  Because I'm bored and I haven't read for ages.
