Cole Harrington
"Cole, you've got to go to school. Stop looking at your phone!" My sister, Kelsey, was starting her morning routine - yelling at me. Guessing where my parents went? They are on a vacation to Rome. So, Kelsey ruled the house ever since. She had been like a queen, making me do all the chores. Ugh...I hate her.
I put my phone down and told her. "I just looked at my phone a few seconds ago. Unlike you when I had to go to school late because you spent hours on the phone talking to Jason. So, now you care if I go to school? That's pretty surprising of you, sister." The colour drained from her face. BURN!!!
"Forget about that.Let's get you to school." She just rolled her eyes at me and told me so as she got her keys. I shrugged and walked out of my home into Kelsey's car. The ride was silent and I prefer it that way. I don't want to suffer from my sister's "5 minutes" talk. Finally, I reached school and I quickly got off the car until....
"Hey, don't be in a hurry." Kelsey yelled.
"What?" I was annoyed.
"Make sure you get a girlfriend soon, baby bro."
"Kelsey, we talked over it so many times. And I'm saying this again and it's final. I'm not getting a girlfriend!" I practically yelled at her. I could see her eyes glistening with tears. Shit!
"Kelsey...I..I'm sorry..."
"Cole, I know you are still mad of your past. I just want you to move on. Is that wrong?" She started crying. I hugged her close to myself and comforted her as if she was a baby.
"I understand, Kelsey. I just feel that I'm not ready. I'll need some time to recover." I stopped hugging her and gave a kiss on my sister's cheek.
"Okay. Goodbye, Cole." She said as she drove her car away. I sighed as I walked into the building. Here we go again...
I walked to the office to get my schedule. I pushed the door open and I saw Mrs Miller sitting in front of her computer. She looked the same except for one thing- she looked calm. Mrs Miller? Calm? Definitely shocking.
"Good morning, Mrs Miller."
"Good morning, Cole. Here's your schedule." She handed me my schedule, without actually throwing it. Strange.
"Mrs Miller, you seem different. You look... more calm."
"Really? Well, a new miracle is in school."
A new miracle? In our school? Now she sounded very weird.
"What do you mean, new miracle?"
"You'll see for yourself, young man." She said as she winked at me. SHE WINKED? AT ME?
"Thank you." I got out of the office and looked at my schedule. Biology? Great subject in the morning..... And I had to get to Laboratory 2. Luckily it's quite near as I only have 10 minutes for class. I walked to my locker and took my biology textbook and notebook. I was walking to class when I saw someone. She was so pretty, my heart skipped a beat for a moment. Who was she? She seemed lost and I got shocked when I saw her face partially.
"Tara? Is that you?"
She turned around and she looked just as shocked as I was.
"Cole?"
"Oh my god Tara. How are you? Haven't seen you for so long. How's Uncle Jay and Aunt Mira? And Leilani?"I pulled her into a hug. I was so happy to see my childhood best friend again. We met each other when we were four and instantly clicked. Our friendship went on for eight years until I had to move from Sydney to Brisbane. Now, I'm right in front of her. And she has changed a lot.....
Suddenly, I heard sniffles. I broke away from our hug and saw her crying.
"Tara, are you okay?"
"I'm not okay at all. It's a long story. I'll tell you soon."
"You're lost?"
"Ya, first day of school here. Do you know where's Laboratory 2?"
"I'm going there too, let's go now. We have only 5 minutes. Luckily it's nearby." I held Tara's hand and walked to our Biology class. She didn't say anything and followed me silently. We got into the class and Thank Lord, we were 3 minutes early. I saw a table empty and I sat there with Tara. As we waited for our teacher, Tara just put her books on the table and rested her head on the table.
...30 minutes later...
Mr Axton just gave us an assignment to do and Tara and I finished within minutes, thanks to our cooperation. Then, Tara told me her story. I felt a pang in my heart. Uncle Jay and Aunt Mira are dead? And Leilani is not with her? That's something terrible to go through. She just sighed and slept on the table. I sympathize her. She has to go through a hell. After 15 minutes, she woke up and we went for our next classes. She told me she could find her classes by herself and left. I shrugged off and walked to my Chemistry class. All I could think is about Tara. She was going through a hell. But she looked as if everything was fine. That was the Tara I knew long ago. She hides all her pain and lives THE day with a smile on her face; just like the face I saw earlier before biology. How does she manage to do this? I was not sure. Then, it was fine for a break. I grabbed my bag and went straight to the cafeteria. I saw Tara sitting at a table, eating her sandwiches. I sat across her and she just smiled at me and I did the same. She just continued eating and she looked as if she was lost in her own thoughts.
I heard footsteps and I looked up. THE DEVILS ARE HERE. Christopher Grant, Alicia Brennan and their other friends. I could feel my blood boiling in me. Those people broke me two years ago. Now, they were behaving as if they were kings and queens of the world. What was worse was they were sitting at the table beside Tara and me. And what was even worse? I saw Tara and Christopher staring at each other like no one else existed in the world. I was fuming with anger. He had a girlfriend, why is staring at Tara that way? He was going to pull my best friend away from me. I couldn't let that happen.
"Tara, let's go now."
"But why, Cole? What's wrong in being here? "
"I don't care Tara. We are just getting out of here!" I yelled at her and she looked very pale. We gained attention from the whole cafeteria. I grabbed her hand and went away from there. I just walked away. I couldn't let Tara be a prey of Christopher Grant. He was the reason Alicia broke up with me.
"Cole, let go." I didn't care. I just walked as fast as I could.
" Cole Harrington, you're hurting my wrist!" I stopped when I heard Tara yelling. I turned around and let go of her.
"What's wrong with you? Why did we have to get out from there?"
I took a deep breath and told her. "Tara, don't ever get close to Christopher. He'll ruin you"
