Diane's POV
Beep! Beep! Beep!
The sound wouldn't just stop. It kept ringing, burning my ears, keeping me on edge. I wanted it to stop. I wanted tranquility. But it seemed impossible. Why? Is it too much to ask for?
And then I opened my eyes. My head was throbbing as though it'd been hit with a sledgehammer and I also couldn't see a dime thing, just white. And for a moment I thought I had gone blind.
But I hadn't, it was just the ceiling.
Wait… where am I?
I immediately sat up and stared around the room. It didn't take long for me to realize that I was in a hospital room. The beeping had been coming from the heart rate monitor.
What am I doing here?
I stared down at the girl sitting by the bed with her head resting on my bed, her brown hair splattered across the bed.
Still wondering who she might be, I touched her arm and gently shook her. She stirred awake and groggily sat up, with her hand rubbing her eyes.
"Huh?" Escaped from her mouth as she gaped at me, with her eyes practically popping out of its socket as though she had just seen a ghost. "Mrs Fox!!!!"
And then she threw herself at me and hugged me so tightly that I gasped for breath.
"Mrs Fox, you're awake!" She cried out as tears streamed down her face like a waterfall. "I don't believe it!"
Then she released me, and stared at me once more, maybe to make sure she wasn't hallucinating or that she wasn't dreaming… I couldn't tell.
She looked pretty, innocent, and graceful with big green eyes, full lips,, and a high chin.
"It really is you!" She exclaimed as she cleaned the tears from her face, "I'll go get the doctor!"
Then she got to her feet and excitedly dashed out of the room.
I was still trying to digest what was happening.
Who is this lovely girl? And why was she so excited to see me?
Just then, a doctor came in came in at the moment with five other nurses trailing behind him alongside the brown-haired girl.
"Mrs Fox." The doctor, a tall man with the build of a bodybuilder, called out. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm feeling… fine, I guess?" My answer was wishy-washy; yeah, I know, but anyone in my position would have said the same thing.
Then the doctor checked my pulse, heart rate, and blood pressure and did all the medical stuff he did. I just sat there like a goddamn dummy as he did all this.
Then he said, "Good, everything seems to be good." Then he held up his hands, "How many fingers am I holding up?"
"Uh… five?"
"Good, how about now?"
"Three."
As I answered, one of the nurses was marking her book report or whatever.
"Good." The doctor nodded in approval. "Now what's your name?"
"Uh…" I tried to think.
Wait! I'm thinking? I don't even know my name?! Who am I?!! I don't even know who I am! I can't even remember what happened before I fell asleep!
Was my name Dawn? Daisy? Daphne? Dahlia? But I knew it began with a D… Donna maybe?
Damn it!
"I don't know!" I blurted out frustratedly.
"It's okay, Mrs Fox." The doctor said soothingly. "It's expected that you don't remember since you hit your head really hard a year ago."
Wait… a year ago? I've been sleeping for a whole year?!! A whole goddamn year?!
"You're diagnosed with amnesia." He told me. ""When you fell your head hit the edge of the concrete step, causing a severe traumatic brain injury. Specifically, the impact damaged your temporal lobe, which is responsible for processing and storing memories. The doctors are calling it a classic case of retrograde amnesia, meaning you've lost memories of events leading up to the accident, as well as some memories from your past."
He paused, studying my reaction before continuing.
"The good news is that your brain is still recovering, and some memories might resurface over time. However, the extent of your memory loss is still unclear, and it may take some time to determine what you can and can't recall."
I felt a wave of panic wash over me as I tried to process this information. What did I look like before the accident? What was my life like? Who were my friends and family? The questions swirled in my mind, but my memories remained frustratingly out of reach.
"What's my name, then?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
The doctor's expression was sympathetic. "Your name is... Diane. Diane Fox."
Ha! I knew it started with a D!
"Can I see what I look like?" I asked slowly.
"Of course."
Then he handed me a mirror.
I stared at my reflection. The face staring back at me was unfamiliar and lost; she had long copper hair, brown eyes, and a symmetrical face.
I was trying not to have a breakdown. At the moment, I felt so… lost!
"Oh, Mrs Fox!" The brown-haired girl from earlier came by the bed and hugged me once more. "It's gonna be okay. I'm sure you'll remember as time goes by."
"Why isn't Mr Fox here?" The doctor asked, but the question wasn't directed at me; it was towards the brown-haired girl.
What's even her name?
She looked up at the doctor. "Well, I've alerted him that Mrs. Fox is awake; he'll be here any moment now."
"Okay, if there's a problem, let us know. Okay?"
The girl nodded.
"Take care, Mrs Fox." The doctor said. "You'll get well soon."
"Thank you."
And then, with that, the doctor, followed by the nurses, left the room.
"Oh Mrs Fox, you don't know how happy I am!" The girl squirmed in excitement and hugged me ain't.
Damn, I think I'm beginning to like her!
"I thought you were really gonna die! I don't even know what I could've done if you did! Thank you, Lord!"
"Uh… are you my sister?" I asked carefully.
She paused and looked at me. "Oh, I forgot, you don't remember. I'm your personal manager, but we were literally sisters before your… incident." The girl answered. "My name is Emily by the way… Emily Brown."
"What do you mean… personal manager?"
"I meant… I handle your affairs."
"Why would you handle my affairs?"
Now this was getting really confusing.
"Because you're a celebrity!" She beamed.
Wait… what? I'm a what?
I was still gaping at her, trying to process what she was saying but she continued adding more confusion.
"And you're married."
"What?" I blurted out. "I'm married?"
Just as Emily was about to answer, the door slid open. Emily and I instantly snapped our heads towards the door.
Standing at the door was a hunk of man!
He was tall, broad-shouldered, dark-haired, fit, sunkissed, good-looking… no wait… saying he was good-looking was an utter understatement. He was… marvelous! Like a Greek god!
His extraordinary facial attributes only highlighted his handsomeness, and his blue hypnotically piercing eyes, which were staring deep into my soul, only made my cheek flush and my heart flutter.
He exuded a definite aura in his flawless dark suit. He was perfection itself!
Who is this man? I asked myself.
"Mr Fox," Emily said, slowly rising to her feet. "You're here."
"Wait, Mr Fox?" I blurted out before I knew it.
Does that mean… does that mean that this… this Greek godlike of a man is my husband?!
"Hello, Diane." He called my name in a deep, manly, perfect voice that only made me attracted to him more! I don't know how I did it, but I'm so lucky this man is my husband! "You're finally awake."
But… call me paranoid but… why am I getting the feeling that he doesn't seem so pleased? Isn't he happy I'm awake?
"Lewis?"
"Yes sir." Another man answered coming into the room. He was tall and cute with brown eyes. He was equally dressed in a dark suit and was carrying a suitcase.
He dived his hand into the suitcase and brought out some papers. Then he handed them over to my so-called husband.
"Now sign these divorce papers." He tossed the papers at me.
I gaped at him in surprise.
"Huh?"
