Chereads / The Echo System / Chapter 4 - Chapter Four

Chapter 4 - Chapter Four

Ethan stood outside Crestwood College, experiencing a blend of anticipation and anxiety. The campus appeared unchanged in his memory: students hurrying to class, the scent of fall leaves, and the tall trees along the paths. He came back not only for classes but to prove he was no longer the same poor student they remembered.

Having the funds from the Echo Core made him feel empowered. He desired for everyone to witness this new beginning. He neatly flattened his fresh jacket and readjusted his stylish backpack to ensure he appeared the role.

Memories came rushing back as he entered through the main door. He recalled the sound of students' laughter, the peaceful nooks of the library, and the sensation of being unnoticed. Today is going to be a unique day. Today, he was going to take back his position.

The hall was filled with lively conversation. Ethan noticed that Sophia was standing next to Carter, her laughter sounding like music. Her hair was glowing in the light as she looked beautiful, causing Ethan's heart to ache momentarily. However, he recalled the reason for his presence.

Carter moved nearer to Sophia, quietly saying something that caused her to laugh once more. Ethan felt his stomach knot up. They believed they had everything sorted. He could not allow them to witness the impact their laughter had on him.

Ethan breathed in deeply and made his way towards them, prepared to face the past. Carter was the first to notice him, his eyes widening in feigned surprise. "Look who's here, the spirit of Crestwood!" he said with fake surprise. "Have you returned to haunt us, or do you have something valuable to share this time?"

Sophia looked around, her face changing from surprised to entertained. "Everyone, look who has returned!" The wayward son has come back! "Have you ultimately managed to win the lottery or a similar prize?" She spoke sarcastically, yet there was a hint of curiosity in her tone.

Ethan smiled smugly, sensing the boost in his self-assurance. "Actually, I performed slightly better," he responded, with a touch of pride evident in his tone. I now have some funds. No longer will you be able to borrow books or depend on receiving handouts.

Carter mocked, folding his arms. "Of course, friend." Let's take a look at that wealth. Will you be flaunting your new shoes or something?

Ethan laughed softly while shaking his head. "Just wait and watch." I have arrangements. He looked towards Sophia with a firm stare. I heard you're still in charge of the student council. Having power must be really nice.

Sophia squinted a little. "It's definitely great to have a genuine scholarship as well." What are you doing returning to this place? Do you believe you can simply come in with your new mindset and charm us?"

Ethan was filled with a surge of resolve. He was prepared to show that they were mistaken. Sophia, you will notice the differences that have occurred. I'm no longer the person who once had a hard time making ends meet.

With that, he pivoted on his heel and departed, abandoning them. While walking down the hallway, he felt a combination of excitement and nervousness. He had established the mood, and now he had to continue as planned.

Following his classes, he went to the student lounge, a location he had previously stayed away from. The space was crowded with students talking, giggling, and browsing on their phones. Ethan noticed a few people huddled around a table, talking about an upcoming event. He was attracted to them.

"Hello, everyone!" he greeted with a loud voice, strolling over to the table with a relaxed self-assurance. Have you been informed about the charity event happening next week? I'm considering becoming a table sponsor.

Surprised, the group directed their attention towards him. "Is that Ethan Reed?" "Who's the sponsor?" asked a girl, arching her eyebrow. "Are you actually wealthy now, or are you simply borrowing money to portray a positive image?"

Ethan's smile showed his unshakeable confidence. "Let's just say I am able to provide assistance." I desire to rejoin this campus community, and I believe this is a positive beginning.

They went from being doubtful to being interested. Another student mentioned that they could use the support if the person is genuinely willing to help. "It would be wonderful to have someone like you, with your recent fortune, supporting us."

Ethan experienced a surge of contentment. He had left a mark. While he was leaving, he caught whispers coming from behind him.

One student inquired if he truly possessed wealth, or if he was simply seeking attention.

" Possibly just taking things temporarily once more. Another person responded with laughter, saying, "We'll find out if he really goes through with it."

Ethan smiled to himself. Allow them to believe whatever they wish. He was aware that he had to consistently demonstrate his seriousness to them.

At the end of the day, he made his way to his car, a stylish sedan he bought with his recently acquired riches. Sitting behind the wheel, he felt a sense of accomplishment, grateful for his hard work. He headed towards the vintage coffee shop close to the university, where he would often daydream about a brighter future.

When he entered, he was welcomed by the aroma of coffee and pastries. He noticed a table in the corner and sat down, taking out his phone to read messages. Throughout the entire day, he stayed occupied, but now he desired to contemplate his next step.

All of a sudden, he caught sight of Sophia entering, her face showing seriousness as she looked around. Their gazes locked, and there was a fleeting sense of electric tension permeating the space between them. She came closer, her face impossible to interpret.

"Is it possible for us to have a conversation?" she inquired, her tone becoming more gentle.

Ethan nodded, his curiosity sparked. "Definitely. What do you want, Sophia?" He asked staring at her
