Back at the table for dessert, Daniel leaned closer to me, with his voice warm, "The chocolate here is amazing. Would you like to share one?"
"Sounds nice," I said, genuinely smiling. Across the table, Calvin cleared his throat.
"Dr. Martinez," he said formally as if we were in a business meeting, "I heard your research facility is doing interesting work with new technologies."
I gave him my best professional smile, the one I'd perfected after years of his torments. "Yes"
"Daniel," I turned deliberately away from Calvin, "tell me more about your project in New York."
Calvin fell silent, stirring his coffee. I could feel him watching me, but I focused on Daniel, who was describing a fascinating new development in his company.
"Darling," Mily touched Calvin's arm, "you're awfully quiet."
