Chapter 4 - Harvest

Yves woke up, leaned over his bed, and picked up the book. He is excited to read the next and last volume.

Yves opened the book and read the first page. He was intrigued by how the first page had an ominous aura; however, he continued to read.

Yves' eyes opened wider with each word he read. He couldn't believe that this was all rooted in reality. The content of the pages looked as if they were straight from a very well-executed novel.

Yves spent the whole day reading the volume. The day passed so fast that for Yves it felt as if he only spent two hours reading and not twelve hours.

Yves closed the book and started to recap what he learned.

The volume is compact with the most important information about this world.

The volume is divided into three parts. Yves only managed to read one part.

Harvest is primarily about how one can have the blessing of mythology and what some of the abilities do. It only talked about the D to B rank mythological creatures, as they are the ones that they have the most knowledge about and how many there are.

The harvest of the abilities is simple yet complex.

What someone has to do in order to have the abilities is to defeat a creature and read the tale about their legend. The complicated part about this method is that there are many recordings of people losing themselves by reading these myths and not being strong enough to control their fear.

Fear is the main dilemma for the people who are going to read the myths. If you once show fear, the chances of the creature reviving inside you increase.

This made a lot of sense for Yves, as it made sense why people were going crazy and screaming.

The intensity of the fear and pressure increases the stronger the mythological creatures are.

As the book states, "There have only been limited encounters of D creatures causing mental insanity."

For C, it is very similar, but now one out of thirty loses control.

For B and presumably A-rank creatures, the statistics are quite low for someone to succeed if this is the first creature they control.

What interested Yves more was that the survivors were purposefully capturing creatures to give to their people with no abilities to increase the chances of them being able to survive the abilities of the higher-ranked monsters.

The limited studies suggest that if one has control over a mythological creature, then the odds of having control over higher-level creatures increase by one hundred percent. Which in this destroyed world is enough for people to start going crazy.

I would like to have my mythological creature. What would mine be? I want one in the world threat category, but it is very dangerous. What is the white-haired guy's creature? He was strong enough to damage a wendigo.

The next day Yves started reading the last two parts of the last volume. Their sizes were half the size of the first part. This part is incredibly interesting, but the information is very theoretical.

The last two parts mostly talk about the harvest of the A-rank to world threats. It talks about many other tools that are being created to ease the fight against these creatures.

A-rank world threats are very hard to encounter and much more than defeating them. In the current era, there have only been twenty sightings of A-rank creatures in Norct.

Country-level threats are even lower with only two sightings; only one of them has been controlled by an anonymous person.

There have been zero continental and world threats since the start of their appearances.

Yves could only look at the book as he read the last page. He felt much more confused about the world than he had been before reading.

He feels as if the book and narrator made everything more and more confusing. Yves made up his mind that he would explore the world and learn about these mythological creatures himself.

Two days have gone by since he finished the book.

At midnight Yves feels someone enter his room. He closes his eyes and prepares his body to attack once he feels that they are close enough to attack.

Yves opened his eyes, feeling that this was the correct movement.

"...?"

Yves is awakened in a dark room dimly lit by a small candle. In front of him, a person covered their identity with a black mask. Beside him, the white-haired young man with two people on each side of his seat.

Yves tried to move his hand, but they were chained to the chair. The chair style reminded Yves of the electric chair.

"What am I doing here?" Yves asked, extremely confused with hints of fear.

"You are here because, from the time that you have been in jail, you have acted too 'normal.' Mind me asking how old you are?" The masked man asked.

"I was born January 12, 1059."

"So you have barely turned sixteen. Very interesting."

"Since you haven't shown any signs of being possessed or a skinwalker… How did you survive for the past three years?" The masked man's tone changed from a calm to a serious tone.

"I lived in the jungle after an army of Wendigo appeared in my village and massacred everyone. I only managed to escape due to the sacrifice," Yves responded in a more serious tone.

"Interesting. Did you learn the Wendigo abilities? First, do you even have a blessing? By how long you lived in the jungle, you would have already encountered a mythological creature."

"Unfortunately, I have not. I tried to activate my abilities, but there was nothing."

"How unlucky?" The masked man stretched his hands, showing two badges: a red and a pink badge.

"You have two choices: If you choose the red one, you stay here and live in this safe town where if you show potential, you might be able to acquire the power of a mythological figure. The pink badge will signify that you wanted to leave and that any risk and deadly injuries were a result of your own free will. The decision is simple: all you have to do is pick either badge."
