Chapter 11 - A Grand Escape

Finally, we reached his office after 5 awkward minutes of silence. He opened his door made of luxurious redwood and we stepped inside. A magnificent office indeed. It looked like it was 10 times the size of my bedroom. The chair was fitted with the best-quality handles and it was made of soft leather. The room was made of white marble and it was lit up by dazzling candles with a soft fragrance. Right above the CEO's armchair was a dazzling chandelier that seemed like it was supported by a thread. The desk was made of birch wood and the floor was neatly polished. Mr. Word beckoned us to sit on the chairs. Doc and Mozart sat down, and obviously, I stayed where I was.

"So Doc. It has been a long time", Mr. Word said. "Hi, Uncle. I know you might be trying to get me back to working for Microsoft Mines again. But, I don't care because I have a really important mission that I really must attend to. So, if you'll be kind enough to let us out through the Northern Gate, then I will really appreciate it", Doc said. I was really shocked at this kind of behavior that too to his uncle and by Mozart's dumbfounded expression I figured out he was too.

"It seems you have already made up your mind. But, since you're my nephew, I offer you one final chance. Join my company and enjoy your status as manager of these mines. You'll be rich and famous just like me." By now, Doc had already stood up. "Sorry uncle. But, I simply can't come back to work here 24/7 without a single break. I'll be leaving now. It was nice seeing you. Come on Mozart", Doc said, walking towards the door.

I could easily see a sudden change in Mr. Word's face. He smiled and suddenly, burst into laughter. Then, he looked up and I could see the reason why Doc had been terrified at him. It looked like a devil had just possessed him. He stood up and clicked a button on his desk. *Click*. Doc, with a look of horror on his face, furiously tried to open the door to no avail. Then, he looked at his uncle with a look of anger and hatred.

"Oh, Doc. Why won't you learn that you don't really get a choice in life? Either you work or you don't leave these mines", Mr. Word said, with a madman's voice.

Doc smiled cunningly at Mr. Word as if he had a plan the entire time. He quickly whipped a pen out of his pocket (which I never even knew he had) and threw it up into the ceiling. He threw with as much force as an experienced javelin thrower. This was when I realized how strong and experienced Doc was. At first, I didn't understand the point until a few seconds later when the chandelier came crashing down on Mr. Word. It turns out the chandelier really was supported by a single thread and Doc knew it too well. Mozart and I were shocked at the brutal attack from Doc and we wondered if Mr. Word was even alive. *Click*. The door opened again.

"Don't worry. That chandelier is made of a special type of glass found in the mines that causes no harm. I just used it to press the button. Now, quick Mozart push Sam out of here. I'll come in a few…" At that moment, a fist punched out of the now-destroyed chandelier. That was all we needed. We sprinted out of the door at top speed. Of course, all the chaos was loud enough to alert the miners something was going on. So as soon as we opened the doors they were all standing outside. They ignored us at first and ran straight into the office to check on their boss. We didn't stick around to see what happened and we immediately ran through the corridors.

It seemed like Mr. Word had told his loyal workers about his disloyal worker, Doc, because soon after that an alarm went off. I didn't see much but I heard a loud clanging noise from behind us. "The doors are closing behind us! We need to run fast! Hold on tight Sam!" Doc informed us.

Mozart ran as fast as he could, pulling the cart as we went. Doc stayed behind me, pushing me for extra speed. We went faster and faster until we finally saw the light ahead of us. The exit was open. We ran faster, but the doors were closing just too fast. Slowly, we started to fall behind and the doors closed even faster. It would be impossible to exit at this rate.

"We'll never make it through", Mozart shouted, to be heard above the loud siren and the clanging doors. A pause. Doc didn't reply anything for a few seconds. "We can make it. I'll just push the cart hard and that will easily help you guys reach the end", Doc said. "But, that means you will…" "Yes, I'll stay behind. I'll be okay. Just remember to come back for me once the mission is done" "DOC, NO!"

I didn't hear a response. We were very close to the exit. I felt a hard push on the cart as it zoomed past the last gate, pushing Mozart along with it. We exited the Northern gates just as it shut behind us. The cart hit a hard brick pavement due to the strong impact of the gate. I pushed myself out of the bag as I looked ahead at what was next. I saw a long brick path that led out far ahead. I could see a tall, shiny, and glossy red wall. It was transparent and looked like it was made of the thinnest of glass. It looked very far ahead.

"Well, 2 sacrifices have been made for this mission. Let's make it count", Mozart said, overcoming his sorrow at the loss of Doc.

I nodded and we both walked slowly towards the endlessly tall Firewall.
