Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: The Limits of Ordinary People

[3rd POV]

"Fujimaru-kun, the first lesson I will teach you today is the essence of being a magus."

Kyouya reluctantly accepted being a disciple, but he is a good person, and the people he fought with were just small-time troublemakers.

Even the police in Fuyuki had to admit that since Kyouya made his debut, small-scale crimes in Fuyuki City had indeed decreased year by year.

He was written as a "bad boy," but he could be seen as the "enemy of evil."

"A magus is someone who delves into magecraft, trying to reach the whirlpool at the root of everything. In short, they are scientists in pursuit of the truth."

Although the paths are different, the "truth" sought by science and the "root" that magecraft aims to reach are essentially the same.

"However, a magician is not a creature as gentle as a scientist. The key lies in the magic crest."

A magic crest is the legacy of a magician's family.

Even a talented genius specializing in a single form of magic might not reach the 'root' on their own.

Therefore, magicians put all the magecraft they've learned in their lives into a magic crest and pass it down to the next generation.

This way, the next generation of magicians doesn't have to gather a lot of information and can stand on the shoulders of giants.

"With the inheritance of the magic crest, the accumulation over generations effectively establishes the lower limit of a magician's strength. This is not only due to excellent bloodlines that easily produce children with better talents, but also because of the advantages inherited from the accumulated knowledge of their ancestors."

Although Rin had noticed that Kyouya had considerable talent in recent days, she still wanted to warn him.

Without a magic crest, there was no foundation, and that could put him at a disadvantage.

"Nowadays, we live in a society ruled by law, and even magicians shouldn't be getting into fights and killing people. Instead, they focus on accumulating knowledge of magecraft and passing on what they've learned from generation to generation. Ultimately, it will be one of those generations that reaches the root, and that's what magicians should be doing today."

It's not that Rin talks too much, but knowing Kyouya's temper and that he's always ready to fight, it's better to explain things a little more.

These days, magus should focus on peace, not fighting with each other.

"I understand. So, when do we start learning the Avada Kedavra curse?"

"I see you don't understand at all."

She was getting frustrated. Before, she had told him to read some books on magecraft, but instead, he was reading Harry Potter...

"In short, if you try to understand magic with modern thinking, then magic is essentially an applied science, right? However, this science requires magic power as a catalyst, or it won't work."

To keep the lesson going, Kyouya decided to stop joking around for a bit.

"For now, your understanding is good. Now, let me give you a simple demonstration of the Tohsaka family's Jewel magecraft."

Rin took out a jewel, and a red light immediately emitted from her hand, and the jewel began to magically change color and shape.

"This is probably changing the atomic structure, turning the original jewel into a different substance and no extra tools are needed. This is definitely much more convenient than science."

He wasn't sure if this would be a difficult feat with the scientific technology of 2003, but the fact that it could change the structure of matter directly without precision tools made magic stand apart from science.

However...

"Tohsaka-san, this is your family's jewel magecraft, right?"

"That's right."

"So, you need to use a jewel?"

"Yes."

"Do you always have to bring your own?"

"Yes."

Rin seemed to realize something, and her smile instantly turned mischievous.

Even though the Tohsaka family wasn't as rich as before, Tokiomi had left plenty of magical patents behind.

She made a good living off the royalties, and even though she wasn't super wealthy, she never ran out of jewels for magic training.

As for Kyouya...

"Fujimaru-kun, you don't happen to be without jewels, do you? Hehe, if you ask your sensei nicely, I might be able to help you out."

Rin had indeed hit a sore spot for Kyouya.

He didn't come from a wealthy family either.

He had a little bit of money, but he was far from being middle class, and there was no way his family would give him money to buy jewels.

She won despite using a dirty trick, and this was the first time she had fully won.

She tried to hold back her laughter. After so many years of suffering, she had finally won a complete victory.

However, after a brief moment of silence, Kyouya seemed to have come up with a solution.

"There's no other choice. I'll have to take some from Shinji first."

"Shinji Matou? Does he have that much money?"

Rin couldn't believe her ears.

The cost of practicing jewel magecraft wasn't small, and no matter how close Kyouya and Shinji were, there's no way Shinji would lend him that much money.

"You don't know? Now, Shinji holds all the financial management in the Matou family."

"Shinji? The old man of the Matou family let some young kid handle the finances?"

Although Rin had heard that the head of the Matou family was a bit eccentric, she couldn't believe he would trust a kid with the family finances.

"Rin, while you were studying magecraft, Shinji was already making a killing in the stock market. Now, the entire Matou family is making money because of him using the stock market to get profits."

Shinji Matou was a genius, and that much was certain.

After being beaten by Kyouya years ago, Shinji seemed to have decided to change his ways and started asking him for advice on how to get stronger.

Kyouya didn't have any advice on how to get stronger, but at the time, he hadn't encountered any magecraft.

He believed money could solve almost every problem and suggested that Shinji focus on making money.

At first, Kyouya thought Shinji would probably just lose money in the stock market, but the Matou family was wealthy, and losing a little wouldn't matter.

What he didn't expect was that Shinji didn't just get wiped out but make tons of money in the stock market.

Soon after, he got into futures trading and forex.

Kyouya hadn't calculated it exactly, but now the Matou family was definitely the richest family in Fuyuki.

Meanwhile, the Tohsaka family had truly fallen out of the game.

"How is that even possible?"

Rin felt completely stunned.

As someone who loved money, she never imagined Shinji would surpass her in making money.

She was so shocked that she literally "petrified" and went into full self-isolation mode.
