Chapter 14 - I Was Lonely!

The town of Dawn's Hollow was shrouded in an unsettling calm as the team arrived. Its cobblestone streets were eerily empty, and the few townsfolk they passed avoided eye contact, whispering hurriedly as they scurried away.

"Well, this is welcoming," Kyren said, his tail flicking uneasily. "Think they throw parades for newcomers?"

"Focus," Isla said, her eyes scanning the quiet town. "Let's find out what's going on here."

They stopped at a small inn, where the innkeeper reluctantly shared the town's plight. "People have been disappearing at night," he said, glancing nervously out the window. "They return a day or two later, but… they're different. Distant. And they keep talking about… a presence in the forest."

"Has anyone been hurt?" Niven asked, his brow furrowed.

The innkeeper shook his head. "No, but it's unnatural. We're scared it'll get worse."

Billy exchanged a glance with Isla. "Sounds like we need to check out that forest."

That night, the team followed the trail into the woods, guided by the faint hum of a song carried on the wind. The melody was haunting yet soothing, its strange allure pulling them deeper into the forest.

"This is… weird," Kyren whispered. "I feel like I'm being drawn somewhere, but I can't tell why."

"Stay alert," Isla said, gripping her sword tightly.

They emerged into a glade bathed in soft, shimmering light. In its center stood a translucent, ethereal figure—a spirit radiating gentle sorrow. It turned to face them, its voice echoing softly.

"Why have you come?" the spirit asked, its tone neither threatening nor welcoming.

"We're here to stop whatever is taking the townsfolk," Isla said firmly. "If that's you, you need to stop."

The spirit tilted its head, its glowing form pulsing faintly. "I didn't mean to frighten them. I… I was lonely."

The spirit explained its plight: it had once been a guardian of the Mana Rift, tasked with guiding souls between realms. When the Rift last closed, it was left behind, stranded in the mortal realm and severed from its purpose. Desperate for companionship, it had used its song to call people to the glade, hoping to ease its solitude.

"I only wanted to talk to them," it said, its voice heavy with regret. "But they always leave… afraid of me."

Niven sighed, his usual sharpness softening. "You didn't mean any harm, but hypnotizing people isn't the way to make friends."

"We can help you get back to the Mana Rift," Isla offered. "If that's where you belong."

The spirit's form brightened, hope flickering across its translucent features. "You would do that for me?"

The team worked tirelessly, weaving together strands of glowing mana with intricate precision under Niven's guidance. He explained each step, his voice steady as he drew ancient sigils in the air that shimmered faintly before settling into the ground. Kyren darted through the forest with uncanny speed, gathering rare herbs and crystalline fragments needed to stabilize the ritual. The process was delicate, with each component placed in a precise arrangement around the glade. The air grew heavy with energy as the circle took form, its lines glowing brighter with every passing moment. Isla and Billy stood guard at the glade's edge, keeping curious villagers at bay.

By the next evening, the ritual was ready. The glade filled with a soft hum as the team activated the mana circle, its glow intensifying until a shimmering portal opened. The spirit hesitated, looking at each of them in turn.

"Thank you," it said, its voice filled with emotion. "You've given me hope. I won't forget you."

With a final, joyful song, the spirit stepped into the portal and vanished. As it passed through, its voice lingered faintly, carrying a cryptic warning: "Beware the darkness within, for it seeks to grow." The glade grew quiet once more, the oppressive air lifting as the portal closed.

The next morning, the team returned to Dawn's Hollow to find the townsfolk relieved and cheerful. Many villagers approached them, offering heartfelt thanks and small tokens of appreciation, such as fresh bread and handwoven charms. "We can finally sleep peacefully again," one elderly woman said, tears in her eyes.

The innkeeper who had first told them about the disappearances clasped Billy's hand tightly. "You've saved us from a nightmare. This town owes you more than we can ever repay." The hypnotized villagers had fully recovered, and the strange unease that had plagued the town was gone.

As the group prepared to leave, Isla glanced back at the forest. "Not every problem needs a fight," she said thoughtfully. "Sometimes, people just need a little understanding."

Billy nodded. "And a little help finding their way home."

Kyren grinned. "So, does this make us exorcists now? Or just really good therapists?"

Niven rolled his eyes. "Let's just focus on not getting hypnotized next time."

The group laughed as they set off for their next destination, the bonds between them stronger than ever.
