Chapter 15 - The Outcast Prince

The journey to Drakemire Village began with a mix of curiosity and concern. Kyren's usual lighthearted demeanor seemed dimmed as the team made their way through the winding forest paths and rugged mountain trails.

"You're awfully quiet," Isla said, walking beside him. "Everything okay?"

Kyren shrugged, his tail flicking behind him. "Just thinking about home. It's been a while."

Billy raised an eyebrow. "You've never really talked about your home before. What's it like?"

Kyren hesitated, then sighed. "It's… complicated. Drakemire Village is amazing. Built into the mountainside, full of glowing caverns and molten forges. But it's also strict. Traditional. Everyone has their place, and if you don't fit into the mold, you're… well, you're me."

"What do you mean?" Niven asked, his ears twitching with curiosity.

"I'm the 7th in line to the throne," Kyren admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "A prince, technically. But to them, I'm just a troublemaker. The outcast who can't live up to the family name."

Isla stopped in her tracks, her eyes wide. "You're a prince?! Why didn't you say anything?"

"Because it doesn't matter," Kyren said, his tone bitter. "They don't care about me, and honestly, I don't care much for them. But I have to go back for the coming-of-age ceremony. It's tradition."

As they traveled, Kyren explained the trials he would have to face: three challenges designed to test strength, mind, and resolve.

"The first trial is a battle against a monster chosen by the elders. It's all about raw strength. The second trial is a mental challenge. Could be a puzzle, a test of memory, or… something else. They like to keep it vague."

"And the third?" Isla asked.

Kyren's expression darkened. "That's the one I'm worried about. The final challenge is different for everyone. It's meant to test your greatest weakness. They don't tell you what it'll be until you're in it."

"Sounds intense," Billy said. "But you're not alone. We'll help you prepare."

The team's first glimpse of Drakemire Village took their breath away. Carved into the side of a massive mountain, the village glowed with the light of molten forges and mana-infused crystals. Towering stone spires jutted upward, each etched with ancient runes that seemed to hum with power. Dragon statues adorned every corner, their fierce expressions a reminder of the village's proud heritage.

Despite its grandeur, the atmosphere was cold. As Kyren led the team through the village, heads turned, and whispers followed them. Some villagers greeted him with curt nods, while others openly sneered.

"Charming place," Niven muttered, his ears flattening.

"This is normal," Kyren said, his voice tight. "They've never liked me much."

At the center of the village stood the council chamber, a grand hall adorned with banners representing the royal family. Waiting for them was Kyren's eldest brother, Zarek, a towering figure with scales that shimmered like molten gold. His piercing eyes swept over the group before settling on Kyren.

"You actually came back," Zarek said, his voice dripping with disdain. "I thought you'd run away like usual."

"Nice to see you too, Zarek," Kyren replied, forcing a grin. "Still as charming as ever."

Zarek's gaze shifted to the team. "And who are these… outsiders? Your entourage of misfits?"

"They're my friends," Kyren said firmly. "And they're here to support me."

"Support you?" Zarek scoffed. "You'll need more than that to survive the trials. Don't embarrass the family, Kyren. That's all I ask."

Over the next few days, the team helped Kyren prepare. Billy sparred with him, offering tips on how to stay defensive while looking for openings. Isla encouraged him to focus on his strengths rather than trying to emulate his siblings. Niven worked with him on mental exercises, devising strategies for potential mind challenges.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the mountains, Isla found Kyren sitting alone, staring at the glowing spires in the distance.

"You okay?" she asked, sitting beside him.

Kyren sighed. "I don't know. This place… it brings back a lot of memories. Mostly bad ones. But you guys being here helps. A lot."

"You're stronger than you think," Isla said. "You've got this. And even if the village doesn't see it, we do."

Kyren smiled, a genuine warmth breaking through his usual sarcasm. "Thanks, Isla. That means a lot."

The night before the trials, the elders gathered in the ceremonial grounds to explain the rules. The grounds were a vast arena surrounded by towering stone pillars, each etched with glowing runes. A hush fell over the crowd as the eldest council member spoke.

"Tomorrow, Kyren of the Seventh Line will face the trials of strength, mind, and resolve. These tests will determine if he is worthy of his name and place among us."

As the announcement ended, Zarek approached Kyren one last time. "Don't get your hopes up," he said, his voice low. "The final trial has broken stronger warriors than you."

Kyren didn't reply, but his friends could see the tension in his jaw.

The chapter ended with Kyren standing at the edge of the ceremonial grounds, his friends cheering him on as he prepared to face the trials. The weight of his past and the hope of his future hung heavily in the air as the first rays of dawn broke over the mountains.
