Chapter 20 - See you later!

The Crimson Caves loomed before the team, the jagged rock formations glowing with an eerie red light. The air was thick with mana, each breath carrying an electric charge that made their skin prickle. Isla tightened her grip on her sword, glancing back at the others.

"Well," Kyren said, his voice echoing slightly. "This place just screams 'danger' doesn't it?"

Billy adjusted his shield. "Stay sharp. Places like this don't give you a second chance."

Niven's ears twitched as he scanned the cavern. "The mana here… it's wild. Unpredictable. Be careful using magic—it might not do what you expect."

Isla nodded, stepping forward. "Let's get this over with."

The group moved cautiously through the winding tunnels, the glow of the crystals casting strange shadows on the walls. The deeper they went, the louder the hum of mana became, vibrating through the rock and into their bones.

As they crossed a narrow stone bridge over a chasm, the ground beneath them trembled.

"Move!" Isla shouted.

The bridge cracked, splitting apart. Isla and Kyren leapt to one side, landing on solid ground as the others stumbled in the opposite direction.

"We're fine!" Billy called across the gap. "But we're stuck over here."

"Same," Kyren said, brushing himself off. "Guess we're splitting up."

Niven frowned. "Just be careful. We'll meet you further in."

Isla and Kyren

The path Isla and Kyren took was narrow and treacherous, the walls closing in as they descended further into the caves. The glow of the crystals intensified, and the hum of mana grew louder.

A low growl echoed through the tunnel. Isla froze, her hand on her sword. "Did you hear that?"

Kyren nodded, his eyes scanning the darkness ahead. "We're not alone."

Out of the shadows, a pack of wolves emerged. Their bodies were covered in crystal-like armor that glinted in the red light. Their eyes glowed with the same eerie hue as the crystals, and their snarls sent chills down Isla's spine.

"Alright," Kyren said, raising his weapon. "Let's do this."

The wolves lunged, their movements unnaturally fast. Isla met the first with a swift strike, her blade sparking against its crystalline hide. Kyren parried another's attack, his shield absorbing the impact before he countered with a heavy blow that sent it sprawling.

"Their armor's tough," Isla said, gritting her teeth as her sword glanced off another wolf. "Go for the joints!"

Kyren nodded, dodging a snapping jaw and driving his blade into the exposed leg of one wolf. It yelped, collapsing as its armor cracked.

The pack circled, their glowing eyes locked on the two. Isla took a deep breath, channeling her mana into her sword. The blade shimmered, cutting through the darkness as she charged.

"Kyren, cover me!" she shouted.

He moved in sync with her, blocking attacks and creating openings as Isla struck with precision. Together, they whittled down the pack, the last wolf retreating into the shadows with a howl.

"Nice work," Kyren said, panting. "We make a good team."

Isla smiled faintly. "Let's keep moving."

Billy and Niven

The path Billy and Niven followed was wider but filled with jagged rocks and dripping stalactites. The air grew colder, and the hum of mana turned into a low, unsettling vibration.

"I don't like this," Billy muttered, his shield raised. "Feels like something's watching us."

Niven's ears twitched. "You're not wrong."

A sudden skittering sound echoed through the tunnel. From the shadows emerged a massive centipede-like creature, its segmented body covered in shimmering scales that reflected the crimson glow. Venom dripped from its mandibles, sizzling as it hit the ground.

"That's new," Billy said, stepping in front of Niven. "Any bright ideas?"

"Keep it busy," Niven replied, his hands glowing with mana. "I'll figure something out."

The creature lunged, its body undulating with terrifying speed. Billy met it head-on, his shield absorbing the impact as he pushed back with all his strength.

"Anytime now, Niven!" Billy shouted, dodging a venomous strike.

Niven muttered an incantation, sending a burst of light toward the creature. The spell struck its head, momentarily stunning it.

"Aim for the joints between the segments!" Niven yelled.

Billy adjusted his stance, targeting the vulnerable areas with precise strikes. The creature hissed in pain, thrashing wildly as Niven continued to bombard it with light-based magic.

With a final swing, Billy drove his sword into the creature's exposed underbelly. It let out a deafening screech before collapsing, its body dissolving into shimmering mana.

"Not bad," Niven said, wiping his brow. "For a guy with a shield."

Billy smirked. "You're welcome."

The two paths converged in a central chamber, where Isla and Kyren rejoined Billy and Niven. The room was filled with glowing red crystals, their light pulsating in a rhythmic pattern.

"Glad to see you two made it," Kyren said, eyeing their tired faces.

"Same to you," Billy replied. "What now?"

Before anyone could answer, the crystals began to shift, their light intensifying. From the walls emerged a massive golem-like creature, its body composed of jagged stone and crystal. Its eyes glowed with the same eerie red light as the orb in the sanctuary.

"Looks like we're not done yet," Isla said, gripping her sword tightly.

"Stick together," Niven said. "This thing's tied to the Mana Rift. It won't go down easily."

The battle was fierce. The golem's massive arms swung with crushing force, each strike shaking the ground. Kyren coordinated their efforts, calling out strategies as they fought.

"Billy, hold the front! Isla, go for the legs! Niven, keep us standing!"

Isla darted around the golem, her strikes aimed at its joints. Billy absorbed its heavy blows with his shield, gritting his teeth as each impact sent shockwaves through his body. Niven focused on healing and support, his magic weaving between offense and defense.

Finally, with a coordinated effort, Isla landed a mana-infused strike on the golem's core, shattering it. The creature let out a low rumble before collapsing into a pile of rubble.

As the dust settled, the team's eyes turned to the center of the chamber, where an ancient pedestal stood. Atop it rested a fragment of the Mana Rift, its energy pulsing with an ominous glow.

Isla stepped forward, her heart pounding as the fragment's light reached out to her. The whispers returned, louder this time, as a vision flooded her mind. The Shadow Herald stood before a massive rift, its voice echoing: "Your power will either save this world or destroy it."

She collapsed, leaving the team rushing to her side as the chapter ended with uncertainty and tension hanging in the air.
