Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10

Damian

"Excuse us, will you?" Weiss said to me.

I took my saucer of strawberries and the bottle of Dussie. Then I headed outside. I went straight to the fountain. It had a garden around it and I stepped in.

I found myself a good place to sit and relaxed myself. The berry was juicy and ripe, the wine was good, the werewolves were at war with the witches, and I was in a safe spot.

Sometimes, I didn't even think I should be part of any of the madness or craziness that was happening around me.

I didn't even want to be on the sidelines, watching how things unfolded. I just wanted to behave like it all didn't exist. Maybe that would tamper the anxiety that I felt every time I found something.

I was interrupted when someone joined me. It was Weiss's younger sister. Her name was Ruby.

She was a beauty and liked people to see her that way. She took a liking to me but I didn't bother to return it. I wasn't interested in a woman who'd probably want to use me as her pet.

I couldn't serve two masters at the same goddamn time.

She was wearing a red dress, slit up to her thighs. As she walked in, I could see that she wasn't wearing anything underneath.

I smiled at her, but she didn't return the smile.

"Do you think we are going to win the war?" she asked.

"If we play our cards right, we will," I replied.

"That isn't an affirmative response, Damian."

I said nothing.

"You aren't sure."

I said nothing.

"But my brother believes in you."

"Why? I'm not the moon goddess. That's whom he should place his beliefs and hopes on. Tell him that."

She shook her head. Maybe bored of my sarcastic attitude already. Ruby folded her hands across her revealing breasts and came to sit beside me. I handed her the saucer and she took a berry. But I kept the wine to myself.

"What makes you think we won't win?" Ruby asked.

"I didn't say we won't win. I said.. "

She cut in. "You said there was a probability we would and another probability we won't. I heard you. What's your reason for saying that?"

"The witches are getting smarter. They are everywhere. Even places we have not thought of. Soon, they'd have infiltrated all of our systems."

"Is that even possible?" she asked.

I had to chuckle. "Of course. It is very possible. If we don't listen."

She squinted her eyes at me. "Are you talking about Weiss?"

I said nothing.

"Oh," she concluded already. "If you think my brother would let the werewolf clans fall into the hands of witches, then yiu are wrong. He is the most dedicated person I have ever seen."

"Then why the hell is he giving the sentries blood documents and making it easy for the witches to track us?"

"It is important they have the blood documents because of where they are stationed."

"I know," I agreed with her. "But they have gotten too sloppy. I'm guessing you've already heard our conversations?"

She nodded in the affirmative. Ruby was so sly, I wondered if she spied on the men who dated her.

And they were a lot. So why the hell was she looking to add me to her list of inventory? I wasn't interested. But a lady like her could make things difficult for me anyway. Regardless, I would have to play smart. Not even a one night stand would satisfy her. She'd always want more, and more, and more.

"So I don't need to tell you how many blood documents the guy found out," I told her. "And that is just one man. We don't know how many they are, doing the same thing for the witches Consortium. And as long as our sentries are loving up, the witches gain the upper hand."

She popped the berry into her mouth and munched on it. There was silence during that time.

"Aren't you going to offer me the wine?" she asked.

"You should have brought yours. Your brother has many of them in his cellar.

A smile changed her countenance but I didn't return it.

She got to her feet and turned to look at me. "I need you in my room now."

I chuckled. "Your brother is going to bleed me to death."

"No, he won't," she stubbornly said, but I wasn't stupid.

"And you are going to watch, Ruby."

"Don't be ridiculous, Damian" she tried again.

I could see it in her eyes, and the way her heart beat. She wanted to get laid. She was probably wet from hearing me talk back there.

"People say I'm good at finding things, that true. And that includes dead bodies. Weiss has been busy killing every one of your sex toys and I know exactly where he dumps them."

She said nothing. I got to my feet.

"You think I wanna add to that number? Think again."

I left her and headed back inside. I wanted to leave. Caught Weiss coming out with the elders. I stayed back until he was finished with them. Then he walked back to me.

"I'd like to take my leave now, sir," I told him.

"Sure. But you will do one thing for me."

"Say it?"

"I'd like for you to change your location. You live with werewolves. Now, I need you to live with witches."

I clearly understood what he was proposing and I didn't like it one bit.

"You're sending me into the lion's den, Weiss?" I asked, wanting to be clarified.

"Not really. The vicinity isn't even filled with witches, so I heard. Just a sprinkling so you'll go unnoticed as long as you don't keep late nights."

"Late nights are us, Weiss."

"I know," he said and put his hands on my shoulders. "I would like us to take a different approach now. We don't have to win this war by doing what we've been doing years ago. You are going to be the ice in the pudding, Damian. You are going to live amongst them and know exactly what makes them tick." He rubbed my shoulders, as if trying to get some heat inside of me. "And you aren't going to let us down."

Yeah, he was sending me right to their hex ground. Maybe I'd take Ruby on her offer, just to get back at Weiss. See if he'd kill me too after getting my hands full.

"I won't," I said, and took my leave.

Ruby was still waiting for me at the fountain.
