"906, what's your emergency?."
"Please trace this call; you'll find a woman unconscious on the walkway. She's the emergency," Ember said while staring at the woman whom she had pushed earlier with too much force than necessary. She hung up after that sentence. Her eyes were bloodshot because she cried earlier; she tsked at her impulsiveness and dropped her phone on the road, hoping a car would run over it. A car did, and the phone was shattered beyond recognition. Sparing the woman another glance, Ember walked her off, hoping she could put everything what happened behind her. Many onlookers did nothing to stop her from leaving the scene.
"You won't check your results?" Koko asked her roommate. Ember merely glanced at her and responded with a dry nod. Koko looked at her, perplexed.
"Is that a 'yes, I will check my result' or 'no, I won't check it'?" Koko asked. Ember repeated the same action by giving her a mere nod.
"Ever since you came home three days ago from that exam, you've been a pain in the buttocks." Koko said with her left eye twitching. Ember stood up and left. A door lock click let Koko know that Ember locked herself in her bedroom.
"What happened to her?" Koko muttered silently. Days crawled because the nights were long. Ember hugged herself as she looked at the moon from her window.
"Should I go back home?"
Ember POV
The moon looks very beautiful; although it's brilliant as deemed by the lights in the city, with my excellent eyes, I can still see the moon clearly.
"Should we go back to the park?"
"No! We haven't found our mate," my wolf Raine said with a slight panic in her voice.
"Didn't you see what I saw that day?"
"That may be a misunderstanding; maybe there's more to the story than what meets the eyes."
"They both had my mate's scent!" I yelled
"Maybe they are related." Raine squeaked. My wolf has always been timid and sometimes very naïve.
"I am sorry for raising my voice, but accept reality. Our mate is happily married with a son."
"But that's not true."
"How do you know?"
"I can feel it... How can you be so sure that he is happily married?" The words got stuck in my head. I dropped the conversation altogether because I am still uncertain about it.
"What should we do?" I asked instead.
"Honestly, I don't know." There was a prolonged silence in my head, and it wasn't a comforting kind.
"Should we leave the city?" I asked, hoping to get rid of the unsettling silence.
"We can't go back home." Raine said with certainty. "Let's go for a walk; maybe we can come up with a solution."
Although it's late, the city is bustling as if it were still early. I look through the open food stands because my mouth is already watering. A little smile found its way to my lips because I found comfort in food and bustling places. I hate being alone.
"What can I get for you?" A girl looking like she's in her mid-twenties dressed in a cute waiter outfit chirped. This is very uncommon in local food stands.
"What do you have?" I asked with a tiny smile. She smiled in return before listing out the food available. As she spoke, I noticed how happy she looked; her eyes shone brightly as she continued speaking. What I'd give to look this happy... I eventually ordered spicy pork ribs and chips. My favourite combo.
Xavier's POV
"What is she currently doing?"
"She's sitting on the bench close to the fountain."
"And?" I implored
"Eating pork ribs and chips?!" Chase reported, his tone soaked with confusion.
"Pork ribs and chips?!" I repeated as my eyebrows quirked.
"Yes, sir," he confirmed. I looked at the phone apprehensively because this was quite unexpected.
"Just keep watching her. Tell me anything you find off." I hung up the phone before leaning back on my chair. I am still at the office, and I don't want to go back home.
"Ember Woods," I mumbled, a smile unknowingly perched on my lips.
"She is interesting." I replayed the CCTV footage of her pushing Stephanie. She used too much strength than usual for a lady. Stephanie is currently at the hospital healing from the broken rib she got from a single push. I have gone through her details, which I believe are fake; there was nothing unusual except the state of origin. There is no information about her until the last three years. She was literally a ghost up until the last three years. Recent discoveries have shown that they are super beings amongst us. I have always been curious about them, and I suspect she may be one of them. I want to know which being she is—is she a vampire? A demon? A wolf? A mermaid?… I want to know.
"I sound crazy in my head right now," I chuckled. I looked at the time, and it's getting late. I need to visit Stephanie at the hospital to at least show my face. I haven't seen her since the day she was admitted there because I don't want to escalate the rumors already out there. I don't like her and have no interest in her. She is a crazy obsessed woman who feels the need to possess my entire being. She is unreasonable. I can't believe she hurt my little nephew because she suspected that he might be my love child... Like, who thinks that way? She was very lucky that she is currently hospitalized. Otherwise, I'd make her...
"Forget it; I can't do shit about her, not with my grandfather watching." I sighed in displeasure.
"That old man refused to go back to his creator." My phone rang. I looked at the caller and picked it up.
"Speak of the devil," I said immediately; it connected.
"Were you wishing me death again ?" My grandfather's low voice sounded from the phone.
"You've lived too long." I said with a placid tone,
"You ungrateful brat, you keep wishing me death as if you don't want me to stay with you a bit longer."
"Whatever sails your boat,"
"Stephanie called me earlier..."
"And?" I drawled out as if I didn't know where the conversation was heading.
"She is your fiancée."
"Don't worry, I'd go visit her tonight." I said to cut the long conversation short.
"Brat, you already knew why I called, and you let me call!"
"I would be too dumb not to know, and you chose to call."
"I can't believe that you were once cute and obedient."
"Bye gramps, I had a long day today."
"Stop calling me gramps brat!" I smiled and hung up the phone before taking a deep breath. I need a breather.
