Chapter 40 - Chapter 40

Beta Zander Perez - POV

"How did this happen, Zander?" Adam questioned while I shook my head. No one has ever dared to step foot into our borders, but this rogue is daring enough to not only trespass but kill two of our pack members so far.

"The sensors should have alerted the guards the moment he stepped inside our borders, but for some reason, it didn't work," I told him.

"Did you check what was wrong with it?" Adam asked me.

"I have asked the tech team to look into it, so we will hopefully get a reply soon. But I don't understand one thing, Adam."

"What is it?" he asked me as a frown formed on his face.

"That rogue does not have a scent on him. Which would mean there is a witch behind this as well."

"You know it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. The witches would never help us with that." Adam said, and I know that he was right. I looked at the two pictures on my desk. The first one was the picture of Rachel Sanders, and the second was the picture of Carmen Davis.

There was absolutely no connection between the two, and they had never met each other or mingled with one another before. Both of them have come here from two very different packs. So what made this rogue kill them? "Did you find anything in the crime scene today?" Adam asked me when I remembered the letter I found.

I didn't have to read the paper to recall what was written on it when I felt the anger bubble within me. "No," I know I shouldn't have lied, but right now, I want this letter to be kept a secret. "We are hitting a dead end here as well." I asserted.

"The only way to stop this rogue is if we catch him," Adam said, and I nodded my head.

"We will catch him soon, Adam. I have tightened the security in my borders, and I have asked the warriors to be vigilant in the main pack borders as well. If he plans to come in a third time, it would be risky." I told him, and Adam nodded his head as he got up to leave.

"Good. Anyway, before I forget. Aurora has moved in with her mate, so now you have your floor all to yourself again." Adam said, and he turned around to leave. For a moment I didn't understand what he said when I remembered the stunt that Aurora pulled earlier with Levi.

"Where is she staying right now?" I asked Adam, which made him halt in his steps as he turned around to face me.

"I didn't have any houses vacant in the main pack for them, so I offered my cabin, which is here. It's not good to keep the mates separated."

"They are not even married yet. Why did you have to do that now?" I asked him while I felt Ares pushing to take control, but I held him out.

"It's better if Aurora stays with her mate, Zander. I hope you don't cause any issues with that." Adam warned me as he walked out of there, leaving me fuming in anger.

Aurora James - POV

"Aurora!" I heard Levi call out my name, so I walked back to the front to see that he had taken in most of my boxes and neatly arranged them in the living room. "I have patrol duties now, but I will be back soon, okay?" he asked me, and I nodded my head.

"Take care," I said, and he nodded his head as he walked out of the cabin. I locked the front door and began taking my boxes to my room. I opened the door to the first room to see that Levi had already arranged his things inside, so I closed the door and walked toward the second door and when I opened it I saw that it was a small library with a desk.

Rage bubbled within me when I realized what this meant. Levi better have an explanation for this because. I walked into the first room and turned on the lights.

It was not a huge room. There was a double bed in the center and a small wardrobe right next to a huge window that was overlooking the forest. I walked towards the door right in front of the bed to see that it was the bathroom.

Two hours later, I had unpacked most of my stuff except for my clothes, which were still inside my suitcase and it had already taken half of the space in the cupboard. But I was thankful that Levi didn't have much clothes. My back was starting to ache as I walked to the bed and lay down. Levi hadn't come back home yet, and my stomach was grumbling in hunger. I walked to the kitchen and looked around when I found a packet of instant noodles in the cupboard.

I placed a pot on the stove and began making my dinner. I thought that I would be happy since I walked out of the pack house, but for some reason, I have been feeling restless and on edge. "We need to be close to our mate," Lily said.

"Did you forget what he told us that morning?" I asked her as the anger bubbled within me. I didn't know how she was still so lovesick with Zander after what he said.

"He didn't mean it. We don't know what exactly went on in his past, Aurora. Maybe he is…"

"Shut up, Lily. I don't want to hear your reasons right now." I snapped at her as I pulled up my block. When the noodles were ready, I put some into a plate, took it to the table, and took a seat. There was a beautiful crescent outside as I began eating my food in solitude while my mind drifted off to the words that Mr. Perez told me earlier.

I was broken out from my thoughts when I heard a painful howl in the distance. The howl broke my heart as I felt the spoon fall off my hands. It was Zander, and I didn't know why he was sad, but that howl made guilt form within me.

"He is out." I heard Lily say.

"Huh?"

"He is not at home, Aurora. This is your chance."
