Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 The cleaner

The car moving down the road rocked a little, and Abby looked out of the window uneasily. The barren landscape was telling her that they had left the base of human existence and were in the wilderness.

" It's your first day at work, are you nervous?" A woman's voice rang in Abby's ears.

The woman who spoke to Abby was named Jeanne. She was the leader of the clearing party. She was leading the other cleaners out on the job this time, and it was clear that she could see that Abby was upset.

Abby was silent. It was her first time away from the base of human survival in the wilderness, a region frequented by mutant monsters and dangerous to ordinary people without superpowers.

After the apocalypse, many mutant monsters appear on Earth, and they not only attack humans, but also take over places where humans used to live, so Awakened sets out to kill the mutant monsters. In an effort to prevent the corpses of mutant monsters from polluting the planet, the government has formed a cleaning department dedicated to disposing of the corpses of mutant monsters, and those who perform this work are called cleaners.

"Don't worry." Jeanne reassured Abby, "Our job is to dispose of Mutant monster's corpses, it's usually not dangerous."

 Abby nodded.

Presently the car stopped in front of an abandoned building. Everyone got out of the car, and each of the cleaners changed into protective clothing and put on gas masks.

Jeanne said to the group, "There are a total of five Mutant venomous spiders carcasses here. We need to dissolve the bodies of the venomous spiders and clean up the scene, do you understand?"

 "Yes." Everyone replied.

"Abby, you follow me." Jeanne said.

So Abby followed Jeanne with the plastic bucket containing the decongestant and cleaning tools, and they went inside the abandoned building. Abby's view through the protective mask revealed the bodies of several mutant venomous spiders scattered on the ground not far away. The bodies of those Mutant Vipers were about fifty feet long, and each one had a hole gouged out of its abdomen, and the dark red blood ran in a stream over the ground.

"Usually mutant monster's crystal nucleus is hidden in the abdomen of their body. "Jeanne whispered to Abby, "It looks like the hunters have taken all the Crystal nucleus of Mutant venomous spiders, we don't need to check them twice."

Mutant monster's Crystal nucleus is by far the most valuable thing, and if a cleaner finds a Crystal nucleus in the process of cleaning up a Mutant monster, they can take possession of it. But usually that's a rare occurrence. After all, those hunters wouldn't leave the Crystal nucleus out.

"Abby, give me the dissolving potion. "Jeanne said.

Abby hands Jeanne the plastic bucket, only to see Jeanne aim the nozzle at the mutant venomous spider in front of her, and then spray the dissolving potion around the body of the mutant venomous spider.

A faint white smoke rose slowly from the lifeless form of the Mutant Venomous Spider. This smoke is the visual manifestation of Dissolving Potion in action, which, like a silent command, quietly dissolves the body of the Mutant Venom Spider.

"Damn it, there's not enough dissolving potion. "Jeanne's brow furrowed tightly as she quickly handed Abby the plastic bucket in her hand that originally contained the dissolving potion, "You stay here, I'll get the dissolving potion from the trunk of the car."

Abby nodded obediently and remained where she was, though her heart was a little troubled.

White smoke soon filled the surroundings, and a thin mist covering Abby's protective mask blurred her vision. Suddenly she heard faintly the sound of something tearing.

Abby's heart skipped a beat as she hastily wiped the mist from her protective mask with her gloved hands. Her eyes widened for an instant as the scene before her grew clearer, and terror was written all over her face.

The abdomen of the otherwise dead mutant venomous spider had been torn open with a shockingly large gash. Immediately after that, a gray, venomous spider cub, like a demon burrowing out of the darkness, wriggled out of the wound. Then a second and a third poked their heads out, too, their black fangs gleaming in the dim light, and from their mouths came a blood-curdling hiss.

Abby had no time to think; she was so frightened that she drew back instantly. However, one of the poisonous spider cubs was extremely quick, and in the twinkling of an eye had crawled to Abby's feet. The venomous tarantula suddenly opened its jaws, and the sharp fangs, like two sharp blades, pierced deep into Abby's calf muscles.

"Help!" Abby shouted desperately as she slammed the plastic bucket she was holding down on the poisonous spider cub. As the residue of the dissolving liquid from the plastic bucket dripped onto the body of the Poisonous spider cub, it immediately let go and quickly crawled to the other side.

Abby's screams immediately attracted the attention of the other cleaners, who were horrified to see the poisonous spider cubs crawling across the floor. The expression of their faces froze for an instant, and their eyes were full of fear and alarm.

The Poisonous spider cubs, as if driven by some kind of motivation, crawled rapidly towards the cleaners in protective clothing, their movements agile and ferocious, as if they wanted to take revenge on these human beings.

The cleaners dropped their cleaning tools and ran for the exit, Abby struggling to keep up with them, her injured leg throbbing with every step.

Suddenly, a sharper pain shot through her injured foot. Abby felt as if her body had been paralyzed by an unseen force. Her limbs grew heavy, and she could no longer support her body. In the next second her whole body gave way in an instant, and she fell to the ground.

The young gray spiders were flashing their terrible black fangs, and they were rushing like a tide of fury toward Abby.
