Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Secrets and Lies

As the days turned into weeks, Jack and I continued to work on rebuilding our lives. We spent our days attending classes, volunteering at the local charity, and exploring the city. But despite our best efforts, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off.

It started with small things. Jack would receive mysterious phone calls and quickly hang up, saying it was just a wrong number. He would get distant and preoccupied, lost in thought, and then suddenly snap back to reality. And then there were the strange looks he would give me, like he was hiding something but didn't know how to tell me.

At first, I brushed it off as paranoia. But as the occurrences continued, I couldn't ignore the nagging feeling that Jack was keeping secrets from me.

One night, as we were studying in the library, I decided to confront him. "Jack, can I talk to you about something?" I asked, trying to sound casual.

Jack looked up from his book, a hint of wariness in his eyes. "What's up?" he asked.

I took a deep breath. "I feel like you're keeping something from me. You've been getting these mysterious phone calls, and you seem really distant lately. What's going on?"

Jack's expression changed, and for a moment, I saw a flash of guilt. But then he quickly covered it up with a smile. "I'm sorry, Sophia. I didn't mean to worry you. It's just...my family's lawyers have been calling me, trying to get me to drop the charges against my father."

I felt a surge of relief. That explained the phone calls, at least. But something still didn't feel right.

"Is that all?" I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.

Jack hesitated, and for a moment, I thought he was going to confess something. But then he shook his head. "No, that's it. I promise."

I wanted to believe him. I really did. But as we packed up our things and left the library, I couldn't shake off the feeling that Jack was still hiding something from me.

Over the next few days, I kept a close eye on Jack, trying to catch him in the act of whatever it was he was hiding. But he seemed perfectly normal, attending classes and volunteering at the charity without any issues.

It wasn't until we received an unexpected visit from Alexander that I began to piece together the truth.

Alexander showed up at our dorm room, looking frantic. "Guys, I need to talk to you about something," he said, glancing around nervously.

"What is it?" Jack asked, immediately on high alert.

Alexander hesitated before speaking. "I've been investigating some discrepancies in the company's finances. And I think I've found something big."

My heart started racing as Alexander revealed his findings. It turned out that Jack's father had been embezzling funds from the company, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. There was a much larger conspiracy at play, one that involved some of the most powerful people in the city.

As we listened to Alexander's revelations, I felt a sense of shock and betrayal. Jack had been keeping this from me, and I couldn't help but wonder why.

But as I looked at Jack, I saw something in his eyes that gave me pause. It was a look of fear, of uncertainty. And in that moment, I realized that Jack wasn't just hiding something from me – he was also hiding something from himself.
