Chapter 10 - You are a good friend

"I want to know who she is, what she does, and what her connection is to the girl at the hotel. And I want it all by the end of the day."

"Yes, sir. I'll get right on it."

Jackson hung up the phone, his mind still reeling with questions, why did his sister seem to know more about it than he did? Are his parent usingEmilyy to get him hooked again?

Lexi settled on her seat, her heart still racing from the close call with Jackson. She couldn't believe she had managed to escape him, but she knew she couldn't let her guard down yet. She glanced out the window, watching as the city lights blurred by.

As the taxi drove on, Lexi's thoughts turned to her boss, and the argument she had with Suzy the other day. She felt a pang of guilt and worry, but she pushed it aside. She needed this break, this chance to clear her head and figure out what she wanted to do next, but still, she should've refused the offer, Madam Isabelle had already given a warning and she was not the type to dawdle in threats.

The taxi finally pulled up to her apartment complex, and Lexi breathed a sigh of relief. She paid the driver and stepped out onto the sidewalk, feeling a sense of peace wash over her. She took a long deep breath, savoring the quiet of the night, before heading towards her apartment, As she walked over to the white and blue painted house, Lexi noticed that the front door was slightly ajar, she stopped in her tracks feeling a shiver run down her spine, and her heart began to beat faster. She pushed the door open slowly, calling out to Suzy.

 "Suzy? Are you home?"

There was no response. Lexi's instincts kicked in, and she felt a sense of unease. She stepped inside, her eyes scanning the room, and that's when she saw her. Suzy was lying on the floor, her face bruised and swollen, Lexi's scream was trapped in her throat as she rushed to Suzy's side. She gently shook Suzy's shoulder, trying to rouse her.

"Suzy, oh my god, what happened?" Lexi whispered, her voice shaking.

Suzy groaned, trying to sit up, but Lexi held her back. "Don't move, I'll call 911," Lexi said, grabbing her phone.

She dialed the numbers, and Lexi's eyes scanned the room, taking in the signs of a struggle. She saw a piece of paper on the coffee table with a note scrawled on it:

YOU WILL PAY FOR WHAT YOU DID, LEXI

 ---Madam Isabelle

Lexi's blood ran cold. Madam Isabelle was a notorious figure in the city, known for her ruthless tactics and connections to the underworld. Lexi had heard rumors that Madam Isabelle was involved in some shady dealings, but she had never thought that she would be targeted.

The paramedics arrived soon after, and Lexi watched in horror as they tended to Suzy's wounds. Suzy was rushed to the hospital, and Lexi was left to pick up the pieces and try to make sense of what had happened, she looked around the apartment realizing that Madam Isabelle's attack was more than just a random act of violence. It was a message, a warning to Lexi to snap tight and not fail in her assignments.

Lexi sat in the dimly lit hospital room, gently stroking Suzy's hair as she slept. The beeping of the machines and the occasional murmur of a nurse's voice were the only sounds that broke the silence. Lexi had been here for hours, watching over Suzy as she recovered from her surgery.

As she sat there, Lexi couldn't help but think about how fragile life was. Just a few hours ago, Suzy had been lying on the operating table, fighting for her life. Now, she was stable, but still in critical condition. Lexi's eyes welled up with tears as she thought about how close she had come to losing her best friend.

Suzy's wounds were extensive, covering most of her torso and arms. The surgeon had done an amazing job of repairing the damage, but Lexi could still see the faint scars and stitches that crisscrossed Suzy's skin. The worst of the wounds was a deep gash that ran from Suzy's shoulder to her hip, a jagged line of stitches that seemed to stretch on forever, Lexi gently lifted the edge of the bandage, peering underneath to check on the wound's progress.

The stitches were holding, and the skin around the wound was starting to heal, but Lexi could still see the faint signs of infection. She made a mental note to ask the doctor about it later, to make sure they were doing everything they could to prevent complications, lexi changed her bandages and applied fresh antibiotic ointment as she was instructed, She talked to her, sang to her, and even read to her, trying to distract her from the pain and discomfort.

She fell asleep after a while and groaned when the sun began to rise, casting a warm glow over the hospital room and her face but she couldn't help but smile seeing Suzy was okay but still unconscious.

. The doctor walked into the room, a warm smile on his face. "Good morning, Lexi," he said, nodding in her direction. "How's Suzy doing?"

Lexi stood up, stretching her tired muscles. "She's doing okay, doctor. She's in a lot of pain, but she's stable."

The doctor nodded, his eyes scanning Suzy's chart. "That's good to hear. We're going to keep her here for a few more days, just to make sure she's on the road to recovery."

Lexi nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. "That's great, doctor. Thank you for taking such good care of her."

The doctor smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "We're doing everything we can, Lexi. But I have to say, I'm impressed with the way you've been caring for her, You're a natural nurse."

Lexi blushed, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. "Thanks, doctor. I just want to make sure Suzy is okay."

The doctor nodded, his expression serious. "I know you do, Lexi. And I appreciate that. But you need to take care of yourself too. You can't pour from an empty cup, you know?"

Lexi nodded "I'll try, doctor. I promise."

The doctor smiled, his eyes twinkling. "I know you will, Lexi. You're a good friend to Suzy, and I'm grateful for that. Now, let's take a look at Suzy's wounds and make sure everything is healing properly."
