Chapter 13 - The secret chamber

At the palace of King Corbin

After the chaotic incident with the mysterious creature, King Arik took it upon himself to ensure that its wounds were properly treated, honoring his daughter's heartfelt wish. Azara, known for her extraordinary spirit and compassion, soon began to fervently plead with her parents to allow her to adopt the creature as her pet. The idea, however, struck King Arik and Queen Aroha as utterly absurd, given the chaos that had ensued. They exchanged wary glances, concerned about the implications of such an unconventional request but princess Azara had always been known for her unwavering spirit, a trait that had defined her since her early childhood. Despite the many challenges she faced, her determination never faltered. When her father, King Arik, finally relented to her wishes regarding the mysterious creature she longed to tame, he imposed a few stringent conditions. He made it clear that Azara must not only understand the creature completely but also master its behavior, ensuring that it would become a gentle companion, harmless to all those around it. With a sense of conviction and purpose, Azara agreed to her parents' terms, ready to embrace the formidable task ahead. With a sense of joy and excitement, Azara chose the name Moeza for the creature, a name that seemed to perfectly capture its unique spirit. King Arik, recognizing the creature's significance, designated a spacious and comfortable chamber for it, ensuring that Moeza would have a warm and welcoming home within the castle.

As night fell over the kingdom, a serene stillness enveloped the castle, wrapping it in a blanket of tranquility. However, within the walls of the bedroom chamber, Queen Aroha felt anything but calm. She moved restlessly, her footsteps echoing softly on the polished floor, her brow furrowed with worry for her elder daughter. The soft glow of candlelight flickered, casting dancing shadows on the walls, but it did little to ease her mounting anxiety. Just then, King Arik returned, his presence a soothing balm after a long night of fulfilling his royal duties.

As he stepped into the dimly lit chamber, he immediately noticed the tension etched on his wife's face. Concern flickered in his eyes as he approached her, his voice gentle yet filled with urgency. "What happened, Aroha? Why do you look so stressed?" Instead of responding to his inquiry, Queen Aroha met his gaze, her eyes sparkling with a mix of urgency and secrecy. "Come with me to the secret room," she urged, her voice barely above a whisper. With a knowing nod, King Arik followed her toward a section of the wall that seemed unremarkable, blending seamlessly with the ornate decor of their chamber. But for those who were attuned to its subtle intricacies, it was a door cleverly disguised, leading to a hidden sanctuary known only to the royal couple. As they approached, the weight of the night hung heavy in the air, hinting at the revelations that awaited them behind that concealed entrance.

The secret chamber exuded an air of mystery, resembling a quaint study room filled with secrets of the past. At the front of the space stood a sturdy wooden study table, its surface scattered with dust motes that danced in the soft light filtering through a nearby window.

A solitary chair, upholstered in rich fabric, sat invitingly beside the table, while a grand bookshelf filled with tomes and scrolls loomed in the background, hinting at the knowledge contained within.

As the royal couple stepped into the room, a sense of urgency ignited in Queen Aroha. She rushed towards the study table, her heart racing with anticipation, and began to comb through the various drawers. After a moment, she spotted one drawer that caught her eye.

It had a golden knob intricately designed with delicate leaf patterns glinting in the dim light. With determination, she retrieved a small key from around her neck and hurriedly unlocked the drawer. Inside, she found a stunning circular bottle, half fashioned from glass and half from a translucent stone.

The bottle was an exquisite piece, adorned with a design of shimmering white moons intertwined with rich, purple, galaxy-like hearts. Within its confines, a fiery red-orange flame flickered and danced, casting ethereal shadows on the walls around them. The bottle was securely sealed, covered with a cork and a lid crafted from a pastel purple crystal and stone that sparkled like stardust. Agitation bubbling within her, Queen Aroha brought the bottle closer to King Arik, her eyes wide with fear. "Look at this, Arik," she breathed, her voice tinged with dread. "This glass bottle is slowly turning to stone, and the flame inside is growing stronger with each passing day." The couple exchanged glances.

"Is this chaos we experienced today a result of Azara's abilities? Could it be because she can communicate with, and even tame, those mysterious creatures?" King Arik asked, his brow furrowed with concern as he looked at Aroha.

Aroha, feeling the weight of the situation, sank into the chair with a weary sigh, her eyes reflecting her unease. "I'm not entirely sure, but it certainly feels connected. Ever since Azara began to learn new things around her, the flame within the bottle has grown stronger. What transpired today was nothing short of extraordinary, but Arik, this isn't a good omen. We need to take action!" she pleaded, her voice trembling with urgency and desperation.

King Arik knelt gracefully before Aroha, his eyes filled with concern as he gently held her hands in his. "Listen," he said softly, "tomorrow I'll visit the royal advisor. Let's see what his thoughts are on this, okay? We won't make any assumptions for now." Aroha nodded, her lashes glistening with unshed tears as she wiped them away. "Okay," she replied, her voice heavy with exhaustion. With a reassuring smile, Arik rose to his feet. "Now come with me; it's time to rest for the night. You look worn out."

He took her hand in his, guiding her upward with a sense of comfort and warmth. Aroha glanced back to the small, ornate drawer where she had kept the bottle hidden. With deliberate care, she placed it back inside and locked it securely, ensuring that both the drawer and the door to the secret room were safely closed. The couple then made their way to their cozy bedroom chamber, the weight of the day's troubles lingering but the promise of a new dawn ahead. They decided to call it a night, seeking solace in each other's presence as they prepared to face whatever lay ahead.
