Chapter 5 - Do I just have 0 luck?

Every time Jiang Yi kills a zombie, does he get food? If that's the case, he would never have to worry about food again! Full and satisfied, Jiang Yi strapped on his backpack, grabbed his skull-cutting knife, and gently opened the door. A strong stench hit him as he stepped over a pile of thin corpses, walking out...

He couldn't wait to return and tell Jia Zi that he had become a capable person too, able to ensure she could live a stable life and not have to exhaust herself every day just to secure water.

Jiang Yi liked Chen Jia Zi, not because she was extraordinarily beautiful, but because since high school, she had been known as a diligent and ambitious student at their school. Even though her grades were only average, her positive and outgoing personality made her very popular.

Back then, shy Jiang Yi never expected that, in the second year of high school, he would receive a confession from Chen Jia Zi! To be honest, Jiang Yi was quite taken aback at the time.

Although he wasn't unattractive, Jiang Yi had always been a rather unremarkable figure at school. When people mentioned him, it was usually in a casual "Oh, you mean that one guy from class who's good at studying…"

To be confessed to like this, Jiang Yi was undeniably moved. After a few interactions, they confirmed their friendship, but since they were both at a crucial time in their lives, their relationship remained within boundaries.

Even though Chen Jia Zi's grades were only average, Jiang Yi helped her improve, and before the college entrance exam, she had successfully raised her score to gain admission to Long Province University of Engineering!

As for Jiang Yi, his grades were good enough for any top university, but because Chen Jia Zi didn't want them to be apart, Jiang Yi made the decision to apply to the same university, Long Province University of Engineering.

So, their relationship remained stable. Jiang Yi even had a premonition that, if things kept going like this, they might even reach the point of discussing marriage after graduation! Unfortunately, all of that was ruined by this damn apocalypse...

Chen Jia Zi's dormitory was on the third floor. Holding his knife, Jiang Yi carefully crept along the corner of the wall towards the staircase! He wasn't so arrogant as to think that his extraordinary abilities meant he could act recklessly. After all, nearly four-fifths of the students in the university had turned into zombies, spreading throughout the entire campus! Moreover, more and more survivors were constantly being infected and added to the zombie army...

If it weren't for the large size of the campus, the vast number of zombies would have already wiped out all survivors. But fortunately, someone had noticed that due to the extreme heat of summer, the zombies were sluggish during the day and their senses were dulled. They only became active at night, coming out from the shadows to hunt...

So, as long as they didn't make too much noise during the day, they wouldn't encounter large groups of zombies! This was why, even though Jiang Yi had caused a huge commotion in the dormitory earlier, he was only surrounded by seven zombies.

But don't think that the day was completely safe—zombies didn't fear sunlight, they simply didn't prefer it! If a living human approached, they wouldn't hesitate to hunt under the scorching sun!

With his current 2nd-level abilities, Jiang Yi didn't believe he could take on a horde of zombies. The low attributes made it difficult even for him to face a single zombie. "I hope I don't run into any zombies," he thought as he continued his careful descent. When he was almost at the dormitory door, suddenly a shadow fell from the sky and crashed heavily onto the ground outside the door!

Jiang Yi cursed, quickly turning around to run, diving into the empty guard room! He then heard the frantic sound of running and roaring outside the dorm. Climbing to the windowsill, he cautiously peeked outside. What he saw made his heart sink.

A fresh corpse, with blood dripping, attracted the zombies lurking around the building. A large group of zombies gathered at the dorm entrance, fiercely attacking the body!

Jiang Yi glanced at them and quickly realized that at least a dozen zombies were feeding on the body outside. "Damn it, she had to die now!" Jiang Yi gritted his teeth, just a bit more and he would've been able to escape the dorm.

He hadn't expected that there would still be survivors in the dorm. But it made sense—girls, being generally weaker, would find it safer to stay in the dorm than to flee during such chaotic times.

However, with the consumption of food and water, along with the psychological pressure of being alone in a zombie nest, many people had mental breakdowns. Jiang Yi had seen many cases of people committing suicide or running straight into the zombie hordes.

Suddenly, a loud roar snapped Jiang Yi out of his thoughts. He quickly looked up and saw the feeding zombies outside suddenly becoming chaotic. A monstrous figure stormed in, swatting two zombies aside with a single slap, then lifted one zombie and ripped it apart, splattering foul blood all over itself, which only made it more excited. The surrounding zombies shrank back in fear, and the huge zombie finally walked over to the corpse, crouched over it, and ripped out the girl's heart, devouring it.

Jiang Yi's eyes snapped open, fixating on the faint red glow flickering between the brows of the powerful zombie ahead…

"Oh no! It's an evolved zombie!" His body instinctively dropped to the ground, holding his breath as if his very survival depended on it. The sight of a horde of ordinary zombies had already plunged him into despair, but now, an evolved one had appeared, leaving Jiang Yi with no thoughts of resistance whatsoever.

This zombie was all too familiar to him. The mutated core he had secretly hidden away had originally fallen from the body of a zombie identical to this one.

That zombie had entered the cafeteria with a group of survivors, tearing through the unsuspecting survivors like wolves among sheep. Fortunately, its immense strength caused it to crash through the floor, trapping it in the wreckage, where a team of superpowered humans managed to finish it off. Even so, the battle had cost the lives of seven superhumans! In the aftermath, it was recorded that this single zombie had caused nearly forty deaths in the cafeteria alone.

Because no one dared deal with its remains, Jiang Yi had been reluctantly sent to clean up the mess. He knew exactly how terrifying this zombie was. At that moment, there was no way he'd even consider resisting it.

Although he had gained extraordinary abilities, they had not made him stronger right away. In fact, at this moment, he was weaker than before. What could he possibly use to face such overwhelming odds?

Swearing under his breath, Jiang Yi realized he was stuck here for now. His only option was to wait for the crowd of zombies outside to gradually disperse, though with the blood-filled atmosphere, there was no chance they would leave anytime soon.

Slowly, he lifted his head to check the situation outside again. But as soon as he did, his gaze met a pair of pale, lifeless eyes. Even the calmest mind would have been shaken by the sight. Jiang Yi collapsed to the ground in shock.

Outside the security room window, a zombie had appeared, seemingly drawn by the sounds inside. It roared and slammed its palm against the window! The fragile glass shattered with a crash!

Yet, despite the force, the three-layer plastic window didn't shatter completely. The zombie's palm left a bloody smear on the glass, but only shattered fragments fell to the floor. Jiang Yi's face turned ashen. He scrambled to his feet and bolted from the security room!

He couldn't stay on the first floor; with all the noise, it wouldn't be long before the zombies broke through the doors. Staying here would mean certain death. As he rushed out, his eyes caught sight of a large set of spare keys hanging on the wall. Without thinking, he grabbed them.

The hunger in the zombies outside seemed to grow more desperate as the sounds of them slamming against the window attracted even more. Hearing their roars and the sound of breaking glass from below, Jiang Yi didn't dare to look back as he rushed up the stairs. Fortunately, zombies couldn't climb stairs, so if he could just make it to the upper levels, he could avoid being surrounded.

Panting heavily, Jiang Yi reached the fourth floor. His face was pale, his entire body trembling from exertion.

His physical condition was still too weak, barely better than a normal human! Just as he was thinking of catching his breath, a small zombie suddenly sprang out from the hallway!

"Roar!" Female zombies were generally weaker than their male counterparts, but the sudden appearance still gave Jiang Yi a fright. Before he could react, the zombie was already on top of him. With no time to draw his weapon, he hurriedly raised his knife to block the zombie's arm!

The zombie's massive strength pushed him backward, almost sending him tumbling down the stairs. He managed to brace himself against the railing just in time, stopping his fall. But the zombie's strength was still far superior to a human's, and Jiang Yi's current power was only a quarter of an average person's.

The two struggled, Jiang Yi being forced back, his body dangerously leaning backward. The sound of more zombies crashing in from the other rooms filled the air. Thankfully, most of the zombies were still trapped in rooms, unable to join the fight immediately.

Barely holding the zombie's arm in place, Jiang Yi took a deep breath and kicked out with all his might. He then twisted the knife sideways, sending the zombie off-balance. The creature let out a horrified shriek as it tumbled down the stairs!

Jiang Yi breathed heavily, watching the zombie struggle at the bottom, still not managing to get up. He glanced at the cleaver in his hand, ready to finish it off. But before he could strike, a loud crash came from the dormitory door nearby. A crack appeared in the already weak door, and the sound of a fresh wave of zombies surged toward him.

Momentarily stunned, Jiang Yi realized he couldn't waste any more time. He abandoned the zombie on the stairs and rushed up to the fifth floor! With the entire building potentially swarming with zombies, he had no choice but to keep moving.
