Chapter 7 - CHAPTER SEVEN

PRESENT DAY

" Where is she? I know you can hear me, come down here and tell me what you meant by saying you won't divorce him. I've always known you peasants to be very greedy, so because you've seen a luxurious lifestyle, you don't want to leave anymore, right? Evelyn! Evelyn!! Evelyn!!! Come down here this minute!" Helen yelled from the living room downstairs.

" What's she doing here this early and why is she yelling?" Evelyn asked Martin in a sleepy tone, whose voice Helen's voice had also disrupted his sleep.

" I don't know, let's go find out," Martin said and they stood up from the bed and headed out of the room.

" What are you doing here this early Helen? Did you sleep at all?" Martin asked as he and Evelyn walked hand in hand down the stairs.

" It's none of your business, you're even holding hands with her? I thought you said you told her about the divorce already; why are you both still acting lovey-dovey?" Helen asked angrily.

" She's still my wife, we're not divorced yet," Martin said firmly.

" She's not your wife; I'm your wife-to-be. She was only hired to act as your wife for three years, and the three years have elapsed; it's time for her to leave for me to take my rightful place," Helen said.

" What rightful place are you talking about? If you truly love me, you would have agreed to marry me when I asked you to marry me, but because you're with me for my money, you refused. You suggested I hire someone to act as my fiance and marry." Martin said angrily.

" And so? People do it all the time, why are you making a big deal out of it?" Helen asked, rolling her eyes.

" Helen, please, what do you want? It's too early for all this drama, you can't just come to a couple's house, disrupt their sleep and start causing trouble. This is a reserved area, remember? We don't make noise here." Evelyn said to her.

" Are you mad? How dare you tell me how I speak or react in my husband's house?" Helen asked aggressively.

" Husband? The last time I checked, I was the only woman he was legally married to. He has no other wife elsewhere or darling; have you been married before?" Evelyn asked Martin.

" No, I've never been married," Martin replied to her.

" You see! I'm his only wife for now, you can take over when I divorce him." Evelyn said to Helen.

" Martin, when is she going to sign the divorce papers?" Helen asked, looking at Evelyn with contempt

" I haven't spoken with my lawyer yet, you know we have to be careful so that my dad doesn't find out, you know that man is well connected, I don't want to fall into the hands of one of his lawyer friends, because if I do, you know what that means," Martin said.

" Then I'll get you a lawyer," Helen said and sat on the couch.

" No, I want to handle it my way, you can't keep being in control of everything concerning me, I want to make decisions

for myself too." Martin said.

" Then why ain't you making the right decision now that she's blackmailing you?" Evelyn asked him.

" Will you shut the fuck up?" Helen yelled.

" I wasn't talking to you, barking dog, learn how to mind your business next time. You don't interfere when couples are talking." Evelyn told her.

" How dare you?" Helen asked aggressively, she stood up from the couch and attacked her.

Martin stopped her, he carried her alongside with her bag and pushed her out of the house, slammed the door in her face and locked the door, leaving the key in the lock so that she wouldn't unlock it with her spare key.

" I think it's time you change the lock, at least for now, before we get divorced; I'm scared knowing she has the spare key; you know that lady is up to no good," Evelyn said as she sat on the couch.

" I know, right? I'm sorry she attacked you that way, are you hurt?" Martin asked as he checked her body.

" Like you care, take your hands off me!" Evelyn yelled at him.

" Evelyn, please don't start. I just finished one episode, I'm not ready for another one." Martin said.

" Who caused it? If you're man enough all these wouldn't be happening." Evelyn said as she stood up from the couch.

" What would you have me do? Let her go ahead and tell my dad, and I lose everything?" Martin asked, looking frustrated.

" Then open up to your father, he will forgive you if he finds out that we're truly in love now," Evelyn said, holding him by his arms.

" No Evelyn, I'm not doing that. I will be seeing a lawyer later this evening, I have to act fast before Helen does something stupid." Martin said and placed his hands on his waist, he was tired already.

" So, you're still head-bent on going ahead with the divorce?" Evelyn asked tearfully.

" Yes, my inheritance and reputation are at stake, I can't risk it, Evelyn," Martin said calmly.

" So nothing can make you change your mind, why not just give this a second thought? You're scared of losing your inheritance, right? What if you later end up losing everything to a woman?" Evelyn asked, looking into his eyes.

" Can she do that? No, Helen isn't that heartless, right?" Martin asked, looking surprised.

" I thought you believed you knew her so well, so why are you asking me? Never trust a desperate woman." Evelyn said, looking away.

" No, she can't do that; stop painting her bad because she's coming between us; I've known Helen for years; she wouldn't do anything to hurt me," Martin said firmly.

" Yet, she couldn't walk down the aisle with you instead she hired a lady to act as your wife for three years, and for those three years I can count how many times she was there for you, she kept coming and leaving your life, she comes when she broke and after you give her a large sum of money, what does she do? She disappears again and comes back after squandering the money. Is that the kind of woman you want in your life?" Evelyn asked, sobbing.

" She has promised to stay this… … … … …"

A knock on the door Interrupted Martin, the knock kept coming heavily on the door.

" Martin, open the door!" A masculine voice said firmly. It was Donald.

" Dad!" Evelyn and Martin exclaimed with their eyes wide open.
