Chereads / Jarl / Chapter 2 - 2

Chapter 2 - 2

"Brace!" Olgir shouted to his platoon before ducking down behind his reliable, yet badly dented gokstad shield. "Incoming!"

Again, he was too late with the warning. Even as he yelled this, the barrage of enemy arrows cut down at least half a dozen of his soldiers. The surviving majority that did manage to get their shields up in time were instantly set upon by a horde of samurai that must have been lying in wait.

The Jarl rose to his feet. This was precisely why he had ordered his archers to remain on the ship. He had a feeling the samurai would be up to their usual treachery. Turning, he saw Eirik the Proud rise from the protection of Astrid and Sigurd's shields and cleave two samurai attackers in half with one broad strike. His old friend didn't even flinch at the brutality, not even when fresh blood from the multi-kill splashed across his war painted face.

Olgir the Untamable nodded in respect. He was glad to have his childhood companion here with him. A brief moment later, what he could best describe as his 'warrior instinct' pulsed like mad. He whirled around, raising his shield.

Krishhh! Kloonk!

The downward swinging dual swords of yet another attacking samurai both failed to meet their mark before Olgir, moving on training alone, followed up the successful deflections with a powerful headbutt, cutting the third sword swing hilariously short. His foe never saw it coming. The thick steel crown of Olgir's ornate helmet caught the samurai square in the mouth, evoking blood curdling howls of agony that irritated Olgir more than anything else.

Converting his rising anger to raw power, he brought his left arm up with all his might and cracked the underside of his screaming opponent's chin with the rim of his shield. This blow lifted his enemy clean off the ground. As that samurai fell back to earth, another leaped in from the side to catch the viking warlord by surprise. Olgir the Untamable however, was in battle mode. He thrust his serrated ulfberht forth and impaled the foolhardy attacker through the shoulder, then ripped it free before looking around for his next target.
