Chapter 7 - STATUS SCREEN

Ding !

Ding !

Ding !

The ringing of chimes resounded in Reid's mind, each one sharp than the other.

He felt his body suspended, encased in a limited space, with the world beyond a blur. Muffled and distant.

The cacoon pulsed faintly, casting soft glowing hues in the underground chamber.

Inside, Reid's body was undergoing a transformation. He was covered in slime and he could feal energy weaving through his entire body. Reshaping and rebuilding him at a molecular level.

The pain was unbearable, but his mind clung to the fragmented chimes as a lifeline.

The chimes ceased, Reid's body stabilized and the crystalline cacoon began to crack , releasing faint beams of light into the dense underground chamber.

Reid gasped for air as the shell collapsed around him releasing a foul pungent smell.

Tracing the smell, Reid found it all over him. His whole body was covered in grey slimy substances that made him want to puke.

' such a nuisance !'

' This must be the impurities that remained as residue '

Ha ! Ha ! Ha!

" Ooh heavens, why did you forsake the people of this world ! ...

As if it wasn't enough that I am a once in a hundred years genius, but you had to, you just had to, give me a cheat system ! Not that am complaining !"

A sarcastic grin expressed itself onto Reid's face. He was ecstatic. This was something he had only seen in a novel.

Something that only convinced him further that he was the MC of this world. A self proclaimed genius found only once in a hundred years.

Finally calming down, after loosing himself in his fantasies for a while, Reid spoke out in a commanding voice,

" STATUS SCREEN ! "

Nothing happened.

So he said it in a softer tone, not at all commanding but,

Nothing happened.

He said the word in an angry voice, a calm voice , an expressionless voice but nothing happened.

Annoyed Reid stated making a fuss by rattling his feet, screeming out the word and all kinds of shannanigans.

Then a thought came his way,

" What if it's one of those systems, the ones that don't have a conscious and have to be manually activated."

With this thought, Reid put his middle and index finger on his forehead.

Ding !

A screen flashed before him.

Reid stated at the status screen with full concentration. He crossed and crisscrossed every single word displayed infront of him.

His thoughts were racing

"If the metric used by this system is like anything I had read in novels then, the physical stats are insane!

Ohh wait ! "

He looked at the dark slimy impurities all over his naked body, realizing what just happened.

" By going with this assumption , then the physical stats are high because of the Codex integration.

But that does not explain why the perception stat is maxed out."

Reid began pacing around the underground chamber, his mind spacing out , not realizing where he even was.

With his hand on his chin, he then thought out loud.

" Could it be because of that intoxicating air? It did highten my senses and only heaven knows how long I was breathing it in before waking up. "

" I have no stat above ten. That should mean that it's the stat limit for level zero, and that above that is level one.

Why is my intelligence so low? If I add the bonus points into perception, would I level up? Or do all my stats need to cross the stat limit for me to level up?

I have some experimenting to do."

Soon after, Reid clicked onto the bonus points panel and transfered one bonus points to the perception stat by double clicking onto the perception stat panel.

The result was that the bonus points reduced by 2 while the intelligent stat rose to 4.

There were no changes.

By his weired anime logic, Reid even thought that he would become smarter by raising the intelligence stat.

Maybe even feel his mind expanding or such, but reality was a cruel mother f**ker .

He felt that he had wasted 2 bonus points.

That made him reluctant to continue his experimentations, but in the end, he chose to add one bonus point to perception.

Again, nothing happened.

The perception stat did not increase but Reid was actually prepared for that outcome.

But what he was not prepared for, was for the bonus stat point to disappear, not adding anything into perception but reducing the bonus start points.

Now 7 bonus points were remaining to be assigned, but Reid became stingy, deciding to continue his experiments when he was loaded with bonus stat points.

That train of thought then led him to the last notification of the Status Screen.

[ NOTE : Soul cores or Spirit cores are needed to level up ]

So what exactly were these soul cores or Spirit cores that were needed for him to level up?

Reid actually already had a theory about them.

He had once grinded his brain about an accumulation of energy that he saw when he was atop the behemoth of a tree.

He first caught wind of this when he went through the horror of watching the grotesque like creature the eagle transformed into devouring it's prey.

He recalled the Eagle chunking and tearing away it's prey's torso. The sight still fresh in his mind because of the heightened senses he was using at the time.

He recalled the Eagle playing with it's prey, only eating little of the flesh but ripping the prey open again and again at it's Torso.

Looking back at those actions now, Reid understood something. The Eagle wasnt playing, it was searching.

Searching for the soul core.

The one that the Eagle devoured in one mouthfull. Not even letting a glint of it's glowing aura escape.

But Reid was watching. He could see the accumulation of energy being devoured. Even if it was just a split second. He saw it.

" Now the question is .. how am I going to get a hold of them? "
