Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

 A Betrayal Unveiled

The campfire's warm illuminated the clearing as tensions simmered among the gathered wolves.

Bethany stood at the center, with her eyes sharp, her posture tense. Noelle watched from the edge of the crowd, her stomach tightening with unease as she sensed something brewing.

Micky stepped closer to Bethany, his commanding presence silencing the murmurs of the pack. "What is this about, Bethany? Why did you call us here?"

Bethany took a deep breath, her voice steady but tinged with an edge of accusation. "I have something to say—something everyone here deserves to know."

Her gaze flicked toward Noelle, and for a moment, their eyes locked.

Noelle's heart pounded. Something about Bethany's expression sent a chill through her.

Bethany turned back to the crowd, her voice rising. "Earlier today, I was attacked."

A ripple of shock moved through the gathered wolves.

"Attacked?" Darren repeated, his brows furrowed.

 "By who?"

Bethany hesitated, as if weighing her words. Then, with deliberate slowness, she pointed toward Noelle.

"By her," Bethany said, her voice cutting through the stunned silence like a blade.

Gasps and whispers erupted, the pack turning to Noelle with wide eyes.

"What?" Noelle's voice broke through the chaos, disbelief and fury mingling in her tone.

 "That's a lie!"

Bethany pressed on, ignoring Noelle's protest. "She cornered me near the river, accusing me of sabotaging the pack. She said she couldn't trust me—and when I tried to explain myself, she shifted."

"That's not true!" Noelle snapped, stepping forward. "I never touched you, Bethany!"

"Enough!" Micky's voice boomed, silencing the crowd. He turned to Bethany, "You're saying Noelle shifted? In front of you?"

"Yes," Bethany said, her voice firm. "And not just in front of me. She was reckless. She risked exposing us all."

Noelle's breath caught as she realized where Bethany was leading this. Her cover, carefully maintained for years, was teetering on the brink of collapse.

"You're lying," Noelle growled, her voice low and dangerous. "You're trying to turn them against me."

"Why would I lie?" Bethany shot back, her voice rising. "You've been hiding something, Noelle, and it's time everyone knew the truth."

Noelle's pulse raced as the weight of Bethany's betrayal pressed down on her. "Don't do this," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Bethany stepped closer to Micky, her voice steady and confident. "She's not who she claims to be. Noelle isn't just some human trying to lead a pack. She's a werewolf."

The words hung in the air like a thunderclap.

For a moment, no one spoke. The crowd seemed frozen, their expressions a mix of confusion, disbelief, and dawning comprehension.

Micky's eyes narrowed as he turned to Noelle.

 "Is this true?"

Noelle's heart sank. She had spent years building her life in this pack, carefully concealing her identity. And now, in an instant, it was all unraveling.

"I can explain," she began, her voice trembling slightly.

"Explain?" Darren interjected, his tone sharp. "You've been lying to us this whole time, and you think an explanation will make it better?"

"I didn't lie," Noelle said, her voice gaining strength. "I never claimed to be something I'm not. You all assumed I was human, and I let you believe it because I thought it was safer that way."

"Safer for who?" Bethany asked, her voice dripping with bitterness.

 "For you or for us?"

Noelle glared at her, anger flaring in her chest. "You don't get to act like the victim here, Bethany. You're the one who turned on me."

"I turned on you?" Bethany's voice cracked with emotion. "You attacked me!"

"That's a lie," Noelle snapped. "And you know it."

"Enough!" Micky's voice cut through the argument, his tone brooking no opposition. He stepped between the two women, his gaze hard.

"Noelle," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "Is it true?

Are you a werewolf?" He asked.

Noelle hesitated, her instincts screaming at her to deny it. But the truth was already out, and there was no point in hiding anymore.

"Yes," she said finally, her voice steady.

"I'm a werewolf."

Another wave of murmurs swept through the crowd.

Micky's jaw tightened. "And you didn't think to tell us? To tell me?"

"I didn't think it mattered," Noelle said, her voice rising. "What difference does it make what I am?

I've been fighting for this pack, protecting it, leading it. That doesn't change just because I'm not human."

"But you lied to us," Darren said, his tone cold. "How can we trust anything you say now?"

Noelle turned to the crowd, her voice filled with conviction. "I didn't lie about my loyalty to this pack. I've put my life on the line for all of you, time and time again.

I didn't tell you the truth because I was afraid of exactly this—of being judged for something I can't change."

Micky's expression softened slightly, but his tone remained firm. "This is a lot to process, Noelle. People are going to have questions. And they deserve answers."

"I'll answer them," Noelle said, her gaze unwavering. "But right now, we have bigger problems. The rogues are still out there, and if we let this divide us, they'll tear us apart."

Bethany opened her mouth to speak, but Micky held up a hand, silencing her.

"We'll deal with this later," he said, his voice final. He turned to the crowd. "Everyone, get back to your posts. We can't afford to let our guard down."

The crowd began to disperse, though the tension lingered in the air.

As the wolves retreated to their duties, Noelle turned to Bethany, her eyes blazing.

"Why?" She demanded. "Why would you do this?"

Bethany met her gaze, her expression conflicted. "Because I needed them to see who you really are. They deserve the truth."

"No," Noelle said, her voice low and trembling with anger. "You did this to hurt me. To undermine me."

Bethany looked away, guilt flickering across her face. "I didn't mean for it to go this far."

"But it did," Noelle said. "And now, whatever trust I had is gone. I hope it was worth it."

She turned and walked away, her heart heavy with betrayal.

---

Later that night, Noelle sat alone in her tent, staring at the journal Bethany had given her. The pages blurred as tears filled her eyes, her emotions a storm of anger, hurt, and confusion.

A soft knock at the entrance drew her attention.

"Come in," she said, her voice hoarse.

Micky stepped inside, his expression unreadable.

"Noelle," he began, his tone cautious. "We need to talk."

She nodded, gesturing for him to sit.

"I don't know what to think," he admitted, his voice low. "You've been a great leader, but this… this changes things."

"I know," Noelle said softly. "And I'll do whatever it takes to earn back your trust. But right now, we need to focus on the rogues. They're the real threat."

Micky studied her for a long moment before nodding. "You're right. But once this is over, we're going to have a long conversation about everything."

Noelle nodded, a flicker of relief passing through her. "Thank you, Micky. For giving me a chance."

"Don't thank me yet," he said, his tone grim. "We're not out of the woods."

As he left, Noelle leaned back in her chair, her mind racing.

The pack's trust in her might be shattered, but she wasn't going to let that stop her. She would prove her loyalty, no matter what it took.

And as for Bethany…

Noelle's jaw tightened. Bethany might have won this round, but the battle was far from over.
