Chapter 6 - 06. Escaping the Gym

Cassie opened the inventory that was allotted to her with a thought command only and in there, she saw a gun. A handgun that was not anything extraordinary, and this left her wondering for a moment what difference it would make. She had, after all, tried everything she knew about combat, and it didn't work because she did not possess any spiritual energy earlier on, but as soon as she gained it like every other human, her kicks and punches became more powerful and dealt more damage. She didn't waste time pondering on the capabilities of a weapon that she had not put to use.

Everything that has happened within the last hour has been extraordinary… supernatural. The events were something that a movie director would have scripted for a blockbuster apocalypse film but here they were, living it as their reality. It was just crazy to think about! With all that had happened, Cassie wouldn't be surprised if her handgun was another crazy addition to the collection. Simply because she couldn't explain how she was rewarded one, Cassie already knew that it would work… it felt right that it should especially after she got following her awakening of [Bull's Eye].

Cassie wasted no time in putting it to use. She pointed the gun at one of the goblins — the third one who had acted smart and almost smashed her head in. The goblin felt no fear and steadied its hand on his weapon as Cassie prepared to fire. As soon as Cassie pointed the gun and looked at her target, the target symbol of a cross appeared, something only she could see. It was as if it had locked onto the goblin.

[Target selected]

[Target: Goblin (1/1)]

[You have a 100% chance of hitting locked target]

Her mouth spread into a smug smile as she muttered very cheerfully, "Sweet!"

Bang~

A shot was fired, and hot smoke oozed from the nozzle of the gun as Cassie was pushed back a step. It was her first step shooting a gun before and surely, if she had not supernaturally received spiritual energy reinforcement, the force of the recoil might have pushed her back even further than it did. She looked straight at the target she had locked on and like her aim, the bullet pierced right through the centre of the goblin's heart. The rest of the goblins were shocked by their marrows as they watched this happen. The bullet was faster than anything they had encountered since arriving in this world.

Just as they expressed shock that one of them was hit from a distance, without Cassie needing to come close, another shot was fired at the same goblin.

Bang~

This time around, Cassie sealed the death of this particular green creature by gunning for the centre of its forehead as blood jetted from the site of the bullet entry. The goblin dropped lifelessly to the ground and his comrades started to tread carefully as they began stepping back slowly.

"Kill them all!" one of the students yelled from behind Cassie, using the moment of the goblin's defeat as the perfect time to boost the others' morale. They had also awakened abilities and in an instant, they switched roles from victims to fighters, completely altering the outcome of this battle in their favour as the goblins received nothing but massacre from them.

"Whatever you can find, use it and fight!" Dave yelled as he flogged a group of zombies with an iron bar he found around him.

Spiritual energy coursed through his veins, complementing his already strong body as he fought through the horde of zombies. It was common knowledge from movies that one shouldn't allow a zombie to get a bite of their flesh no matter what and Dave continued to reiterate it as he couldn't guarantee the level of knowledge the rest had about this sort of thing. Dave did not want to take the risk because if one or more of them fell victim to a zombie bite, then the rest were pretty much fucked since their death would become a certainty.

Bam~

Bam~

Ka-poooww~

Ka-baaaamm~

The zombies were easy to deal with as they barely put up any fight against the humans, given their sluggish and draggy nature; even a little child with spiritual energy would comfortably slay a zombie. But at the same time, they were also quite difficult and frustrating to fight because their numbers never seemed to end. It was as though the more you killed, the more they returned. They were the frustrating enemy in a game with infinite respawn as an ability.

Dave and his gym friends put up a good fight, slaughtering more than a hundred of the horde that appeared inside the gym. The scent of rotting flesh started to kick in and make them feel nauseous and dizzy and Dave knew that they had to find a way out of this place.

Dave looked at Phil as he breathed hard, his chest heaving visibly.

"Phil, you said your ability had to do with sound."

Phil nodded affirmatively as he yanked off the arm of an unsuspecting zombie. Dave bobbed his head as he quickly conjured a plan for their escape. He needed to get out of this place, if not for anything but to find his sister, Cassie. He couldn't guarantee her safety if he was trapped here.

"Everyone!" Dave yelled. "Get behind Phil and cover your ears as much as you can!"

Dave moved behind Phil and as if they were in sync, Phil made an accurate guess at what Dave was planning. Wasting no time, every human inside her moved behind Phil and Phil stepped forward to stand between them and the zombies, some of whom were once friends they were training with barely an hour ago.

"Now, Phil!" Dave yelled as he covered his ears tightly to prevent him from incurring damage from Phil's ability.

Phil took a deep breath as his belly seemed to expand. He was ready to use his ability [Super Mic] to make things easier for them and provide a pathway for their escape. As soon as Phil opened his mouth, an intense wave of sonic energy blasted from his mouth and travelled through the horde of zombies.

High-pitched and high-frequency waves of sound assaulted their ears and disoriented them. Even Dave and the other humans felt the effects but this was dumbed down because of the spiritual energy they possessed. For Phil to deal reasonable damage to a fellow awakened human he would need to grow a bit more stronger.

Seeing that the plan was working, Dave waited until Phil was done with his part before charging forward, leading the rest of the humans in a charge to escape the gym.
