Chapter 11 - Plant friends

"You think I'll be the next person to get powers?"

Sawyer looked at her with amusement. Was he really naive or acting naive? He was going with the latter one.

"I mean, it was because of you, he got powers."

Jamie laughed. That was funny.

"You say it like I'm some superpower-giving goddess."

Sawyer didn't reply.

Jamie found that he was really serious about it. But didn't it sound like some kind of fantasy fever dream?

"It can't be true. You see, if I had those powers, I'd have given myself some. No one would have been able to bully me."

"Right!"

Jamie thought she was right. If she had this kind of power, she would have hurt those guys.

"It's cold, go in."

Jamie didn't notice it but it was definitely chilly here.

"You? Are you staying here all night?"

Sawyer shook his head.

"I'll go to sleep soon. You go in."

Jamie nodded.

She didn't stay there for long. She was sleepy now.

Sawyer watched her walk inside and extended his palm. The vine jumped on his palm.

"I feel so close to her."

"You sure, you have the same kind of energy?"

The vine nodded humanely. The vine was picking up human actions.

Sawyer nodded. He was right. It's just that the person involved was stupid.

As long as she was in his group, he didn't have to worry.

He raised his other palm. A fireball appeared. Yeah, he was right.

The morning was calm. But the silence was broken by rustling sounds.

"Get up. We have to leave."

Jamie was woken up. She stood up and followed Sawyer bleary-eyed. He collected the tents with the help of Leo and just as they vacated the place, some people appeared. They had climbed up the tree now and from the canopy of the leaves, they could see a group standing exactly where the tent was.

"Just missed them. If we had caught them, we could have eliminated almost half of the competition."

A man spoke to someone Jamie assumed was the leader.

"Let's go. We can hit others."

They moved forward and disappeared from their view. Jamie was about to move. Sawyer caught her arm and made her stop.

"No!"

He mouthed.

"Why?"

She acted.

He just shook his head. Before she could make out any word, the group came back.

"Huh, I thought they would have come out of their hiding spots."

The same guy mumbled.

"It means they have left for real, let's go."

Looking at their leaving backs, Jamie was thrilled.

This time, she was again going to jump. Sawyer caught her and Jamie glared at him.

The leader came back.

What the hell!

Who was this extremely doubtful guy?

"Why do I still feel that there's someone here?"

He put a camera in a bush.

Jamie was speechless. If this guy was present in the apocalypse times then, maybe he could have solved so many issues. He was really good.

He left for good this time.

"We can't jump down. Can you jump between trees?"

Sawyer looked at them with questions.

Leo nodded. Jamie nodded hesitantly. She had never done that.

Sawyer then took his backpack, slung it and it hung on a branch of the nearby tree that was ten feet away from them. Leo jumped first. For a pole-like guy, he was really good at crossing the distance.

Sawyer jumped next. He made it look so easy like he was born and raised here, in the jungle.

Finally, Rose was left. She looked down and found Sawyer had taken her backpack too. So all she had to do was jump.

But somehow she couldn't make herself jump. It looked scary.

"Jump, we will catch you."

Leo spoke up. He stood on a sturdy branch and gestured to her.

Sawyer kept looking at her with his deep eyes like always. Jamie gritted her teeth. How could she take her revenge if she couldn't make a small jump?

Jamie felt motivated.

She took a leap of faith and almost did it right. Almost.

Her balance tilted and she was bending back, her feet were losing balance. Oh no, Sprain City was next.

Sawyer looked at her performance and snorted. How come a girl who fought with him and nearly won fell like this? He jumped down and caught her arm. Then he caught her waist to balance her. She was really delicate.

A powerful yet delicate girl.

"Thank you. "

Jamie was so thankful to Sawyer that she almost wanted to hug him.

"Don't worry, Jamie. If you were falling, Sawyer would have jumped down so he could have caught you, so no worries."

Jamie didn't think much of it. Anyway, they were all. On the tree now.

"Won't that camera notice that we are here?"

"We are out of its range so we can get down," Leo answered while watching Sawyer who was in fact climbing down.

"Have you gone on such quests before?"

Jamie whispered to Leo.

"No, my first one. I went with Brother Sawyer on our routine outings though."

Sawyer led them to their target vine. He had help. The vine that was with him was like a tracker.

"We arrived here."

They stood on a little cliff-like place and a clearing was below. They were sure that the vine was down there.

"Let's go down."

Jamie wanted to see how Sawyer would do it. He just jumped down.

"Isn't he worried that he will get hurt?"

Jamie asked.

"Let's try."

They both jumped at once.

Jamie then found that the floor was just a huge network of vines so their fall wasn't deadly. Interesting.

Sawyer was watching a huge tree before him with complicated eyes.

"Please don't kill me. Take my branches."

"Grandpa Vine, there are so many teams coming here to take you."

.

"How about you give us some vine parts so no one would bother you when I distribute these?"

Jamie looked at Sawyer talking to the tree with intense confusion. She hoped Leo could answer but he stood there, even more confused than her.
