Sawyer wasn't as concerned about this issue. He nodded at Jamie.
Jamie was even more confused. What does a nod mean? Is it saying "Yes, go ahead" or "Tell him No" or something else?
She made a face that betrayed her feelings. Sawyer walked to her and told her in a low voice.
"Give him and ask for what you want."
Jamie looked at the captain. He should be rich. The other members looked really well-fed.
"What can you give in exchange?"
She threw the question to him. Whatever he said, she could add number to it and just barter. She was really so clever.
Jamie wanted to pat her back.
The captain looked at the girl near him.
"He can give three hundred levels four zombie crystals. And a favor!"
Her words shocked them all.
The captain pulled her away.
"What favor? We aren't that good. Who would want a favor from us?"
He wasn't speaking in a low volume. Everyone heard them. The girl looked back and glared at him.
"You idiot!"
She left him there and stood before Jamie.
"See, we don't have much now. But he got a superpower, I'm sure our team will not be nameless. Any time you call us, we will be there. No questions asked."
Sawyer looked at the girl with attention. Jamie turned to look at him and he was not looking at her. She needed some input. She looked at Leo. He kept glancing at all of them.
Jamie decided that she would decide this by herself. It was her thing after all.
"I accept."
She wasn't going to say no to such a good exchange. The water gun wasn't that valuable to her.
The captain got the crystals in a bag.
"Here!"
Was he carrying it all this time? And didn't this mean her load was getting heavier?
But if she didn't take those crystals now, what if something happened later? You can't trust anyone these days.
"Thank you so much!"
The captain bowed to her before going back to look at the forgotten zombie. Her side became lonely. They all ran away to their jobs.
"Funny how people leave you so fast!"
The girl beside her said.
Jamie was used to this. If there was something she understood in the chaotic world, it was that she couldn't ask someone to be with her. Not for a moment. That's why it was uncharacteristic of her when she accepted Marc's proposal of becoming a couple.
Maybe she wanted someone who could listen to her thoughts at the end of the day. Or someone who would say- "Jamie, you are doing okay!"
But none of that happened. No one stays with you for more than a moment. The days here made her feel less lonely so she started leaning on Sawyer and Leo. She was happy that she managed to catch herself in time.
"Yeah, being alone is the norm, right?"
The girl smiled.
"Not really. If you can find someone who resonates with you, it's good. If you don't, try getting some friends. No one should be lonely."
"What about you?"
Jamie was curious about this girl.
"The girl you talked with now, Goldy, she is my sister."
That was surprising. Because other than hearing the first time she yelled for her sister, there was no interaction between them.
"She saw me look okay. She won't come to check up on me."
"Why?"
"Tough love. She wants me to become strong like her. I can't."
The girl looked at her sister Goldy who was now carrying the zombie ashes to be dealt with.
"Maybe she is doing what she thinks is the best."
"Yeah, I wonder what a normal sibling relationship is like."
.
"Jamie, give me back my phone. Don't like all the pictures. She will know I have a crush on her!"
"Ha, Ray! Remember how you embarrassed me in front of my class?"
Yeah, she remembered her brother. They were close, weren't they? Only three years younger than her.
"Normal is the abnormal now. I see that our world now is tilting towards becoming normal."
The girl sighed.
"That could happen if there are more super powers like Jake. We can change the system, the zombies will be gone, and then a truly normal world."
Jamie knew there was a slight issue in that. The power-hungry people at the top wouldn't like this. She didn't tell the little girl that.
"You look young. Why are you in a guild fight?"
"I'm fourteen. My sister wants me to experience the world."
Tough! But understandable.
Jamie watched them clear the area. She watched Jake and Goldy talking with Sawyer. Because he had a really patient expression on his face, unlike the irritated one he sported before her most of the time.
"Hey, Jamie, let's leave."
Leo pulled her up.
"Nice to meet you, girl."
Jamie waved at her while following Leo and Sawyer.
"They look friendly!"
Leo commented.
"You missed the part where they were interrogating me about the powers."
Sawyer grumbled.
"When you were smiling and talking with Goldy?"
Sawyer turned back and inquisitively glanced at Jamie.
"Yes! They think we have something to do with the water powers thing."
"That's ridiculous, isn't it?"
Leo looked at Jamie as if asking for her confirmation. She nodded.
Sawyer pointedly looked at Jamie.
"Who knows!"
Jamie didn't notice his meaningful look. She was tired.
"Let's camp out here!"
It was a heavenly idea as Jamie fell asleep as soon as she set her tent.
When she woke up, she found that her vines were gone. She found Sawyer sitting near the fire watching the stars.
"Beautiful?"
She nodded. She didn't watch the stars because she was busy catching up on sleep but the sky was still the same.
"Why are you awake?"
"You are awake too!"
"If you could get any superpowers, what would you want?"
This clicked something in her mind. Yes, Sawyer had fire powers, and Leo had lightning powers. Why can't she show her space powers? It's better than trying to hide.
Looking at the glint in her eyes, as if an idea was brewing, Sawyer hid a smile.
