Synopsis
Being the daughter of a famous dragon hunter has its perks and annoyances. One perk Everscent likes is that she has access to things other people normally wouldn't. For instance, getting noticed by the Dragon God Chaos and receiving his blessing, giving her access to the system. There's no way she would have drawn the attention of a shadow god if she wasn't related to her parents. A second perk is getting one on one sparring sessions and being able to afford a tutor to help her control her blessing. At least, if they can find one strong enough to handle the powerful darkness she wields. An annoying perk would be all the expectations that are put on her shoulders. "Your mother is a strict Headmistress for the number one academy in the world and your father is an anointed Hunter to a High Lord who won the national tournament. How powerful are you?" Only she is powerful, she just can't control it so she doesn't use it. Often, at least. Well, only when it's convenient. However, now that Everscent is twenty years of age, she can go with her older brother to the academy to follow her family legacy. To join the tournament and become a dragon hunter. Well, just as soon as she masters the rest of her blessing. However, one mistake makes her entire first year tense and unforgettable. No one likes a pissed off King breathing down their neck, Ever especially. Not when her brother is starting to act weird. Not when demons are sneaking into the academy, and not when dragons are attacking with the Dra'koni. Is it just her or does everything just have bad timing? *** Two daggers sit atop a white marble pillar, protected by a dome of glass. While the hilts and crossguards match, the blades are different. One is made of a pale, shiny metal, while the other is crafted from dark obsidian. At the center of their hilts are round opal stones. Everscent leans closer, her hands pressing against the glass as she gapes at the lovely weapons. "What are you doing?" The deep, quiet voice makes her yelp and she jumps away from the dragon-blessed item. Everscent spins around and finds a dark figure leaning against the doorframe leading to the room she's in. Is he here to steal it too? Has word already gotten out about it being transferred here already? That's so annoying… Ding [Profile blocked from viewing.] Everescent's eyebrows furrow as she averts her eyes from her system screen to her new guest. How strong does he have to be to do that? A low grade wouldn't have been able to get past the Honeycomb Barrier. Everscent narrows her eyes. If he truly is that strong, can he see her profile window? He isn't giving anything away that he does. "Wha–" Her voice cracks, and she cuts herself off to clear her throat. Dang it. "Me? What about you?" The guy doesn't respond at first, then he hums. He gazes up at something behind her and taps a finger against the fabric of his pants. Then he pushes himself off of the doorframe, and with his hands shoved into his pockets, steps closer. "I asked you first," he shrugs. She tilts her head, why does he seem so familiar? "I got curious." She glares at him. She takes him in from head to toe. "I wanted to see it." "Seeing doesn't require touching, now does it, little thief?" She can hear smugness in his tone. Ever's hands curl into fists. Who the hell is this guy? "It's your turn," she snaps, nodding at him. "Why are you here?" "Just," he pauses, and reaches up to scratch the top of his head and then sighs, "doing some old man a favor." Old man? Her eyebrows furrow. "What–" He cuts her off. Suddenly, he's inches away from her, his eyes squinting as he smiles wide from beneath his mask. His eyelashes are so long. "You talk too much." He murmurs softly.

Chapter 1 - The Night Born for Chaos

A dark sky without a moon is the night born for Chaos.

Everscent thinks of the quote at an ironic time as she pulls her black balaclava mask up to the bridge of her nose. Her blue eyes pop out against the dark fabric of her clothing, yet in the space of the shadows, she's invisible thanks to her skill. Her platinum-colored hair is hidden beneath her hood, twisted tight so there are no loose strands. The thin fabric of her matching body suit makes it easy for her to breathe and for her body to move around without restrictions. Thick straps of leather bound over the stretchy fabric of her pants, clinging to her upper thighs. Sheathed daggers hang from both legs for quick access. She tilts her head back to stare up at the moonless sky. Even the stars hide behind the artificial light of the city, leaving a black and empty vast space. A dark abyss that goes on forever.

The wind blows, and goosebumps erupt on her arms as she feels the charge of excitement in the air. An energy and restlessness that has her heart racing in her chest.

The night born for Chaos.

Maybe everything just has good timing? 'Do not count on coincidences,' her mother would say on a night like this. It's the words of a seer that shouldn't be relied on. The thought is a lie that she clings to. She never listens to the jumbo her mother spews, not when she was eleven, and not when she was sixteen. She's not about to start now.

[B Level Honeycomb Barrier active.]

The blue system screen appears before her, and she sighs in disappointment as she gazes up at the blue glowing shield that surrounds the property of her next theft heist. She assumed that the Officials would have used at least an S-rank defense shield, given that the newest shipment inside is a Chaos-Blessed item that many dragon hunters would die to get their hands on.

Chaos, the dragon god of his name, controls darkness, shadows, and the balance between light and darkness. Her powers come from his blessing, which manifested when she turned sixteen, four years ago. Anyone who happens to be blessed by Chaos would be gunning for his blessed item if they knew about it. The only reason Everscent does is because she overheard her father talking about it. He works directly alongside the High Lord of Pyroura as one of his advisors and hunter. They've been friends since they both entered the academy together, as she has heard many times from her mother, and now, as adults, they seem to still be attached by the hip.

She's disappointed in the Officials, to say the least. Government Officials are supposed to be the best of the best – or so they claim – so what's with the lame barrier? Maybe it's a good thing that she's going to steal it. Maybe the High Lord will learn to take things such as this more seriously.

The GOIM –Government Official Item Museum is a facility built in the center of Gawon City that seals away highly dangerous and rare system items. It's a tightly run organization, keeping track of any and all potential threats or world-saving items.

If her mother ever caught her doing this, she'd probably have a fit. Her father would probably give her that look of disappointment he often gives her when she does things like this. Her brother Elias would likely comfort her afterward, offer her some sort of sweet treat, and then give her his advice–whether she wants it or not.

But if she gets away with it, she'll have an S-ranked Chaos-blessed item!

Everscent tugs the hood of her cloak further down before stepping into the shadows of a dark alley. Her body distorts into the darkness, and through the shadows, slips past the A-level Honeycomb Barrier. She goes undetected by the guards patrolling the perimeter. Their silver badges glisten in the little light there is outside.

She shakes off the cold feeling of dread and slips into the facility through the shadows of hidden corners. She slips past the wooden receptions desk at the front and down the winding staircase to the floors below ground level, where they keep the most hostile of items locked away.

She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath as she reaches out to sense the power auras around her. She detects a dark energy, one pulsing with the familiar darkness of her own.

Found you. She smiles and slips through shadows down the halls, following the dark aura that calls to her. She pauses when she catches sight of the reason she's here.

The two daggers sit atop a white marble pillar, protected by a dome of glass. The daggers are identical yet opposite. While the hilts and crossguards match, the blades are different. One is made of a pale, shiny metal, while the other is crafted from dark obsidian. At the center of their hilts are round opal stones.

Everscent leans closer, her hands pressing against the glass as she gapes at the lovely weapons. The set is too beautiful not to admire for a moment.

"What are you doing?"

The deep, quiet voice makes her yelp and she jumps away from the dragon-blessed item.
