Chereads / Dragon Codex: Knight of Chaos / Chapter 11 - Emberlyn

Chapter 11 - Emberlyn

"I don't know when you'll see me next." Elias shrugs, "But if you want to seek me out, come to the festival tomorrow." The New Year Festival is held every year, mostly for the new first years who have been accepted. "Have fun at orientation. And just between me and you," he leans down to whisper in her ear, "Try to be nice. It'll be nice to have more than one friend in your circle." Elias stands up straight. He pushes his platinum hair out of the way and winks as he steps backwards. He turns and trudges down the steps from the girls dormitory.

"What are you talking about?" She asks his retreating figure. "I am nice."

She can hear his distant snort. She sighs and turns around, looking up at the girls dormitory. There are four floors, each one matching the year of students who sleep there. Ever pushes through the door and not a step inside does a fourth year girl step in front of her.

She's pretty with long, straight black hair, cropped bangs, and dark blue eyes that seem to glow from between thick lashes. She's dressed neatly, with her maroon blazer unbuttoned.

"Hello, I'm Bailey Moonie." She smiles but it falls just as quickly. "Only, never call me by my full name or I'll punch you in the tit." Then she's smiling again.

Everscent laughs, "Uhm, okay?"

"Everyone else calls me Bee. You can too." She holds a slender hand out and Ever shakes it.

"Everscent." She says, glancing around the main room of the first year dorms. The lounge is full of mixed years, friends discussing their breaks and new ones being made. She wants to scan them, learn what each of their blessings are and what weapons they use. A hum settles beneath her skin as she ignores the thought. She'll have plenty of time to learn about them when it comes to combat lessons.

"We were actually going to be introduced tomorrow," Bee steps back so the two of them can move out of the way of the front entrance. Ever follows her so they're standing near the far wall. "but when I saw you walk in I thought why not meet her now?"

Everscents pale brows furrow, "We were?" She doesn't recall making plans with anyone for tomorrow.

Bee chuckles and flips black hair over her shoulder, "I'm a member of your brother's team for the tournament."

"Oh!" Everscents' ice blue eyes widen as Bee grins, "I'm sorry. I didn't know he was already assigned one so early in the year."

"Yeah, members are chosen during the third year." She glances over her shoulder. " It's to help build trust amongst us, ya know?"

"Yeah, of course." Everscent nods. "That makes sense."

"Bee, hurry up!" A group of girls call from a few feet away. When they see Ever looking at them, they smile and wave.

"Anyway," Bee draws her attention back, "if you ever need help, anything at all, just let me know. You can always get my number from your brother." She grins. "I've got to get going now. Good luck at orientation!"

Ever waves a hand and then drops it when she's gone. She takes the hall to the left and looks for her room, number 123. It's easy to remember, the 1 stands for the first floor, and 23 is the actual room number.

She knocks, just in case her roommate is already there, and then opens the door. A girl with flaming red hair is standing on top of a bed made of blue linen. She's stretched up, leaning against the wall to pin a corner of cloth to the wall.

"Oh, hi." Ever chuckles. She steps inside and closes the door behind her. She immediately spots her luggage on what she guesses is her side of the room. She turns back to the girl, who has completed what she was doing and is now moving to sit on her bed.

"Uh, I'm Emberlyn." The red-haired girl smooths her top and flashes an awkward smile, "And before you ask, no, I'm not a fire mage, I'm actually a water mage. My parents likes jokes." She chuckles awkwardly.

Ever raises an eyebrow.

"You're only a —" Ever cuts herself off. Try to be nice. Her brother's words come to mind. She clears her throat and forces an awkward chuckle. "I'm Everscent." The two girls shake hands, "Please don't call me Eve. Just call me Ever."

"Ever and Ember. Double E!" The red-haired girl giggles. "Sorry, I get weird when I'm nervous."

"It's fine." She smiles. She turns to her side of the room and sighs. She doesn't really have to unpack her things now, does she? She glances back to see her roommate organizing her desk. She doesn't want to come off as a lazy person, though. . .

"Do you have any siblings who go here?"

The question makes Everscent pause. Does this mean that she doesn't know about who Ever is related to? "Yeah, my older brother." She says, hoping she's not being too vague. "I also have a couple family friends."

She doesn't give in to her lazy tendencies, and begins to put her clothes away in the drawer next to her bed. Plus, she didn't bring much anyway.

"Oh wow, lucky!" Emberlyn pouts. "I'm an only child, but hopefully not for long! My mother is expecting." Her voice softens with fondness. "I come from the Noble House Verouen."

There's a moment of silence as the two girls get lost in their tasks.

"I heard our High Lord's youngest son is attending this year too." Emberlyn says. She steps away from her desk and smiles, as if satisfied with how organized it looks. She turns to Ever, "Do you think we'll see him tomorrow?"

High Lord's youngest son. . . She's talking about Phoenix. Everscent pauses as she debates telling her that she knows him personally and actually has plans to see him the next morning? She bites her lip, Emberlyn seems like the chatty type, and Ever doesn't want to answer too many questions right now.

"Mm, probably." She finally answers.

"I hear he's very handsome." Emberlyn continues on, oblivious to Ever's thoughts. "Much like his brother and father." She sighs dreamily. "Good genes that family has."

Everscent laughs, "Good genes?"

"Yes, genes!" Emberlyn flops down onto her bed, her arms spread wide. She blinks up at the ceiling with green eyes, "They play a huge role in physical features you know. My mom calls them good breeding genes." She visibly shivers.

There's a small pause.

"Yeah, never say that again," Ever laughs, struggling to catch her breath.
