Chapter 8 - The Big Shot

Shameless or not, Laura couldn't care less.

She brought the soup and found Robert, only to discover that Robert was freely coming and going in the hospital and had no restrictions on his distance from her.

Robert immediately excitedly stated that he would stay in the hospital to monitor the Martin family and also keep an eye on his nephew, so he wouldn't follow Laura back.

Laura didn't care about him and went home with the thermos.

She returned home early today, and coupled with finally having a day off, she opened her computer and started playing an online game, preparing to invite teammates to do a game dungeon together.

But as soon as she entered the game dungeon, a phone call came. The number displayed on the other end was a string of garbled characters, completely abnormal.

Laura answered the call without thinking, lazily saying, "Hello."

"There's an urgent mission. Will you come?" The voice on the other end belonged to an ordinary-sounding man, but one could sense his nervousness and urgency at the moment.

"What kind of urgent mission?" Laura glanced at the time. It was 1:30 in the afternoon. "Oh, it's my nap time."

Inside the computer, her teammates started ordering Laura to stand in the right position and start attacking. The sound of Laura's keyboard typing could be heard loudly.

The other person, hearing the intense sound of her keyboard, remained silent for a while before saying, "Do you know City C?"

While controlling the mouse and keyboard, Laura could still think about other things. "Oh, that famous haunted tourism city, right?" She had only seen that city in the news.

It was the city where an outbreak of flu was reported, and the government advised people not to visit.

The other person said in a low voice, "Yes, we had a group of inspectors return from there, and they contracted an unknown disease. At present, we have no way to cure it. I have no other options, so I'm calling you to try."

Laura asked one more question, "Is it related to the flu outbreak in City C that you mentioned in the news?"

He replied with a "yes."

It seemed that this matter was very serious, otherwise, the authorities wouldn't need to hide it.

After thinking for a moment, Laura said, "The consultation fee is one million. If I hang up the game dungeon, my teammates will incur a loss of spirit fee of 100,000 dollars. Other fees will depend on the condition."

The other person responded, "...Fine." His voice contained a trace of sobbing and disbelief at how money-driven Laura was.

Once he agreed, Laura immediately typed an apology to her teammates, saying that she had something urgent to attend to and had to go offline. She would compensate them when she came back if they were unable to clear the game dungeon.

Amid her teammates' scolding, Laura calmly disconnected.

Laura didn't know who this person was, nor did she care. In fact, even if she used her toes, she could guess that this person was from a special department.

When he first encountered Laura, it was while handling a special case. It couldn't be made public, nor could it be explained.

He had once tried to recruit Laura, but Laura wasn't interested. Since then, he treated Laura as an outsider and generally wouldn't contact her. Because he couldn't afford it, the fee started at a million dollars. It was something that even an ordinary person couldn't bear.

But this time, he had no other choice.

Laura referred to him as Allen. Yes, Allen, was such a common and ordinary name.

After hanging up the phone, he sent Laura an address, which would automatically delete after Laura read it.

The location was in an old alley in City A, where every inch of land was worth its weight in gold. Most of the buildings were European-style houses.

Laura envied this golden location while twisting and turning, entering a dilapidated alley with only one European-style house, which was a bit rundown.

In front of the main entrance stood two men smoking. Although they were dressed in old rags and looked ordinary, their eyes immediately became sharp and wary when they saw Laura.

"May I ask who you're looking for?"

When they spoke, their accent was pure local, but it couldn't hide the hint of probing in their words.

Laura was wearing a pink denim skirt today, with a large kitty embroidered on the front.

None of these clothes were bought by her; Karen and Nancy decided her wardrobe based on their aesthetic preferences, as long as it wasn't too outrageous.

Her cute girl appearance, appearing here, resembled those famous internet celebrities who held their phones to take pictures.

Laura chewed on her lollipop, smiling. "Allen called me here, and said there's work."

This statement had a lot of ambiguity.

Instantly, the two men in front had a complicated look on their faces, and without needing to think, it was clear that they had misunderstood.

"We... don't have any work," one of them choked out.

Laura disdainfully retorted, "You don't want to save people, right? Those several people saved in City C."

The people in front suddenly widened their eyes.

Just then, another person came out, wearing a long coat with a strong local flair and a seemingly ordinary appearance. Only if one was familiar with him could they recognize his face.

"Hey hey hey, boss, you've arrived. Come over here," Allen ran over and said to his two colleagues, "I invited her, she is a master!"

His words made his two colleagues suddenly realize, dropping their guard and gesturing for Laura to go inside.

Before entering, Laura took advantage of the moment to advertise herself, "Hey, I dare not claim to be a master, but other than murder and arson, I can take on any other job. I can even help with your children's homework or provide all-in-one services. If you ever need it, you can ask Allen for my contact information. My rates are also very reasonable."

Allen, "..."

The two colleagues, "..."

Allen led her inside, frustrated. "Please, don't say that. Who would dare to ask you to do their children's homework?"

"It's not me who does it, I send my third brother," Laura replied. She didn't have that ability.

Allen, "..." Okay, everyone in your family is a salesman.

As Allen led Laura in, they entered a seemingly ordinary rundown courtyard, but there was a hidden wonder inside. In the innermost room, they opened a secret door and walked in, revealing an ultimate clash between ancient and modern.

The basement was decorated in a futuristic sci-fi style, with a special universe-like curtain overhead, making it seem like one was in the middle of space. For a moment, it felt like a dream, as if truly being in outer space.

However, the group of men in tattered clothes in front was particularly eye-catching.

Laura commented, "Without that technology, don't fantasize about this kind of decor. It's too exaggerated. Look at the other equipment in your room, how can they compare to this vast cosmic curtain?"

Just the fact that they were using electric lights nearby made it far from futuristic or sci-fi.

"Quickly, go and take a look," Allen said.

Allen led Laura over. There weren't many people here, just a few men and some individuals lying on beds that were slightly more advanced in technology compared to ordinary hospitals, cold and magnetic.

Looking ahead, even the timid would be scared out of their wits.

Several individuals lay there, their faces completely disfigured, including one woman, all groaning in pain. They had several wounds on their bodies and faces, continuously seeping green liquid.

The sight was eerie and chilling. Several doctors in white coats standing nearby seemed clueless and anxious.

"Who is this?"

"Allen, is this the person you invited?"

A few of them looked at Laura with puzzled expressions, especially one man with a special lightning-shaped scar at the corner of his right eye, who seemed particularly cautious when looking at Laura.

Allen quickly said, "This is the big shot I invited. Maybe she can help with the injuries of you." After saying that, he looked at Laura anxiously. "Have you noticed anything?"

Laura carefully looked at the people on the beds, remaining silent.

The people nearby didn't believe her, whispering, "We've never heard of such symptoms. Such a young girl..." Before they finished speaking, Allen bumped the person's arm, shaking his head to signal him to stop talking. The big boss didn't like being talked about.

At the same time, Laura raised her head, her tone indifferent. "If you don't believe me, find someone else. After all, I came here for money. If I can't cure it, no payment is required. But since you did pay, I will find a way."

The person, "..."

The wounds were strange and grotesque, like rotting wounds, but green fluid kept seeping out from them. It was even possible to see the flesh inside the wounds, and that green fluid had a corrosive property. They used a special instrument to catch it, preventing the liquid from touching other surfaces.

The doctors looked at her with skepticism. The experts here were world-renowned, yet they were helpless against this condition. They began to doubt Laura.

One of them curiously asked, "Do you understand medicine?"
