Chapter 6 - Win His Heart

During dinner, Karen hadn't finished her meal yet.

She had a great appetite. The food at school was unsatisfying, just enough to get stuck in her teeth. Only when she returned home she could enjoy a big feast.

The siblings were either studying and living in school or staying in a mental hospital, so everyone was quite busy. Occasionally, Laura went to visit each one when she was free.

When Karen finished eating, she dutifully cleaned up the house, like washing the dishes she used. It was quite a chore. After the exhausting work, she had to prepare thirty cream bread for a late-night snack...

The TV hanging on the living room wall was still on, and it was Robert watching it. After all, he couldn't touch anything in the house, so Laura would turn on the TV for him to pass the time.

A news channel was broadcasting a news report about travel, advising tourists to avoid a certain border region where influenza seemed to be spreading. They were advised not to travel there during this time.

Robert looked at it with some confusion, "Influenza? Wow, nowhere is safe nowadays."

Laura just glanced at the news, looked at the location, then turned her head away and went upstairs without paying much attention.

Before leaving, Laura said, "The electricity bill will be deducted separately, as well as the cost of living and lodging during this time. Remember that."

Although Robert was already dead, he still had some hidden money that others didn't know about, so he could use that to ask Laura for help.

Robert, "..."

The next day, Laura got out of bed and went downstairs. Karen had already gone to school and Robert floated over with excitement.

Today, Laura could finally take him to meet his nephew. Although he was already dead, now as a spirit, he didn't experience too much pain apart from some regrets. He found this situation quite interesting.

After all, as a spirit, he only realized after death that humans could become spirits. However, this young girl Laura said that not everyone could become a spirit. Perhaps he had some special reason.

However, after investigating the scene of the incident, there were no clues left by the culprit.

Since Robert became aware of his spirit form after death, the killer had undoubtedly escaped long ago. Besides the scene of the crime, there was nowhere else he could go. Being in the wild, there was no way for him to investigate who had assassinated him.

But now, being with Laura was different.

To avoid being seen as crazy, when they were outside, Laura wouldn't talk to Robert who was floating in the air.

As a spirit, he couldn't touch anything, and there was nothing that could restrain a spirit. So even under the bright sun, he could still appear.

Observing everything on the street after death, Robert found it quite fascinating. He used to be a high-ranking executive in a corporation, but now he was like someone who had never seen the world, rambling on and nagging.

"Oh, so there is such beautiful scenery in the sky."

"Oh, that girl had her purse stolen by a pickpocket, but unfortunately, I can only watch and can't help her."

"Laura, there's a man behind you using a mirror to look at your… chest."

Laura immediately turned and hit the man. In the morning subway, a scream was heard.

Laura calmly held her lollipop, and in the astonished gaze of everyone, she waited until the subway reached the station, then dragged the man away with a calm expression. "Next time, if you dare peep at me, I'll beat you to death!" she exclaimed, throwing him out of the subway.

The man couldn't withstand the impact and rolled several rounds.

The onlookers, "..."

Robert, "..." She could see spirits, and she could easily slap someone so that they couldn't get up. What else was surprising? Luckily, this station was remote and had few people. They were mostly elderly, so no one was quick enough to record a video. Otherwise, Laura would have made headlines.

Robert began to reflect on whether it was right to recommend her to protect Hyman. Although it was for protection, she was also his nephew's 'fiancée', and he knew Hyman's personality...

If he provoked her...

Hyman's life would be in danger!!

Of course, Laura was unaware of the storm brewing in Robert's mind. According to the plan, she had to visit Hyman at least once a day this month, fulfilling her duties as his fiancée. She would assess Hyman's attitude towards her and make plans accordingly.

They arrived at a secret rendezvous point near the hospital, where the butler was already waiting. Despite carrying a thermos, he still displayed his aristocratic attitude.

"This is the bone soup we prepared carefully. You can say that you made it yourself and give it to him. Whether he drinks it or not, we will prepare it on time every day."

The Martin family spared no effort to help Laura win Hyman's heart as his fiancée.

Laura took the thermos and opened the lid, taking a sniff in front of the butler's astonished look. "It smells so good. He can't finish it. Can I drink half of it? I haven't had breakfast this morning."

The butler replied sternly, "No!" Don't you have any sense of completing the task?

Laura ignored him, dismissed his words as nonsense, and walked away with the thermos in hand.

The butler suddenly felt a foreboding sense of darkness for the future.

Robert glanced at the butler and sneered, "I never expected the butler to be on their side." By "their side," he naturally referred to his second and fourth brothers.

The key point was that the butler had worked for the Martin family for over a decade without any signs of suspicion.

Laura remained silent, just smelling the thermos and smiling slightly. "The food here is really good. This mission is worth it. If I can drink it every day, then still endure this terrible task. I will tell him tomorrow that I plan to perform well and have him prepare three meals a day for me."

Robert interrupted, "Didn't he ask you to give it to Hyman to drink?"

"He definitely won't drink it. He will suspect that I have poisoned it. So, this soup is for me in the end."

Robert sighed in disbelief. What kind of big shot was she?

Outside the hospital, on a specific floor, four burly bodyguards were waiting. Each of them was capable of taking on ten opponents. To pass through, Laura had to undergo their inspection.

After checking Laura and finding nothing suspicious, they even opened the lid of the thermos to take a sniff. Once they confirmed there was no issue, the bodyguards nodded and let her pass.

As Laura passed through, she noticed that Robert hovered in mid-air. Suddenly, his legs passed through a checking machine, and the machine started flashing and screaming frantically.

"Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep!!"

"Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep!!"

Laura was already a meter away, but she immediately turned back. The bodyguards also looked at her in astonishment, but when they glanced at the machine, there was nothing.

Robert, scared by the machine's sound, drifted three meters away. "What's going on? It scared the hell out of me!"

Laura, "..."

One of the bodyguards said in a low voice, "Miss Laura, could you please turn around and let us recheck?"

Laura raised an eyebrow and walked back to the machine, circling it twice without any reaction from the machine.

The bodyguards had no choice but to let her pass. The glances exchanged by the group indicated that the machine's settings might not have been adjusted properly.

Meanwhile, Laura looked at Robert and realized something. She walked a few meters away, and only then did she signal Robert with her eyes. After hesitating for a moment, Robert floated towards the machine. This time, as soon as he approached, the machine started flashing and screaming frantically again.

The unbearable beeping sound caused chaos in the hospital. Laura didn't expect the machine to detect Robert, but apart from the warning, the machine couldn't provide any analysis values. As soon as Robert left, it stopped beeping.

Robert, being an educated person, stroked his chin and pondered, "Could this special magnetic field formed by these machines really detect spirits?"

Otherwise, the machine wouldn't have sensed him. Laura thought it was possible. After all, there was still a collective spirit in this world. Although it couldn't be seen in modern society, it didn't mean that certain special devices couldn't detect it.

However, they could only perceive it, but couldn't obtain any results from the detection.
