Chereads / HINATA SISTER: THE GLOW OF RISING MOON / Chapter 22 - Chapter 21: The Forest of Echoes

Chapter 22 - Chapter 21: The Forest of Echoes

The morning light was a welcome change as the group left the cave behind, their spirits bolstered by their renewed resolve. Amara led the way, her pendant faintly glowing to guide them toward the next shard.

"The pendant's pulling us west," she said, her voice steady. "Into the Forest of Echoes."

Kael frowned, his hand resting on the hilt of a makeshift blade Seris had helped him craft. "That place has a reputation. Travelers say it's cursed."

Lyra adjusted her satchel, her expression uncertain. "Cursed or not, it's our path. The shard must be there for a reason."

Seris nodded, her sharp gaze scanning the horizon. "Let's keep moving. If the pendant's leading us there, Raven's forces will be close behind."

Entering the Forest

The trees of the Forest of Echoes loomed tall and ancient, their twisted branches forming a canopy that blocked out much of the sunlight. The air grew colder as the group ventured deeper, and an eerie silence settled over them.

The pendant's glow brightened slightly, casting faint beams of light that danced across the forest floor. Amara kept her eyes fixed on it, her grip tightening.

"This place feels… wrong," she murmured.

Kael glanced around, his voice hushed. "It's too quiet. No birds, no animals. Just us."

As if in response, a faint whisper echoed through the trees. It was indistinct at first, but soon it grew louder, as though the forest itself was speaking.

---

The Whispers Begin

The whispers swirled around them, forming words that seemed to come from every direction.

"Turn back…"

"You cannot win…"

"The Light will fail you…"

Lyra froze, her eyes wide. "Do you hear that? It's like the forest is… alive."

Seris unsheathed her blades, her expression tense. "It's trying to get in our heads. Stay focused."

Amara clutched the pendant, drawing strength from its warmth. "Ignore the voices. They're trying to scare us."

The group pressed on, but the whispers grew louder, more insistent. Shadows flickered at the edges of their vision, and the path ahead seemed to twist and change.

---

The Test of the Forest

Suddenly, the ground beneath them shifted, and the group found themselves separated by a dense fog that rolled in without warning.

"Amara? Kael?!" Lyra's voice was panicked, but it sounded distant.

Amara turned, only to find herself alone. The pendant's glow was her only source of light, and the whispers became more personal.

"You are not strong enough…"

"They will leave you behind…"

"Raven is inevitable…"

She clenched her fists, her heart pounding. "You're wrong. I won't give up."

The pendant flared, pushing the fog back slightly, but a shadowy figure emerged ahead of her. It looked like Raven, her crimson eyes piercing through the mist.

"You cannot escape me, Bearer," the figure said, her voice dripping with malice.

Amara raised the pendant, her voice firm. "You're not real. You're just another trick."

The figure lunged at her, and Amara instinctively released a burst of light. The shadow dissolved, and the whispers faded momentarily.

Reuniting the Group

Elsewhere, Kael swung his makeshift sword at similar shadows, his frustration evident. "I'm getting real tired of this!"

Seris fought with precision, her blades cutting through the illusions. "Focus, Kael. These things aren't real. They can't hurt us unless we let them."

Lyra, meanwhile, relied on her agility to dodge the apparitions, using her knowledge of the forest's legends to navigate. "The Forest of Echoes feeds on fear," she muttered to herself. "Stay calm. Don't give it power."

One by one, they broke free of the fog, the pendant's light drawing them back together.

---

The Shard's Guardian

As they regrouped, the whispers ceased, and the forest opened into a clearing. At the center stood a massive, ancient tree with silver bark and glowing leaves. Embedded in its trunk was the shard, its light pulsing like a heartbeat.

Amara stepped forward, but Seris held out an arm to stop her. "Wait. Something's guarding it."

The ground trembled, and roots burst from the earth, twisting together to form a towering guardian made of wood and stone. Its glowing eyes locked onto the group, and it let out a deep, resonating growl.

Kael readied his weapon. "Of course it wouldn't be that easy."

Amara nodded, the pendant glowing brighter. "Stay together. We can do this."
