Chapter 28 - Chapter 27: Shadows in the Snow

The morning came with a bitter chill, the sun barely cresting the horizon as the group prepared to leave their makeshift camp. The snow beneath their feet crunched softly, and their breaths hung in the air like small clouds.

"We should be out of the mountains by midday," Seris said, scanning the path ahead. "But stay alert. These trails are treacherous, and the Whisperer's influence might still linger."

Kael groaned as he adjusted his pack. "Can't we just have one day without surprises? I'm starting to miss boring."

Amara gave a faint smile but didn't respond. Her hand rested on the pendant, its faint glow steady but unnerving.

An Ominous Discovery

As they descended into a narrow gorge, Lyra paused, her eyes narrowing. "Wait."

The group stopped, immediately on edge. Seris stepped forward, her hand on her blade. "What is it?"

Lyra pointed to the ground. The snow was disturbed, deep grooves and footprints scattered across the path. "Something's been through here. Recently."

Kael knelt to inspect the tracks. "Looks like… claws? Big ones."

Amara frowned, her voice tense. "Do you think it's another guardian?"

Seris shook her head. "Guardians don't leave their domains. Whatever this is, it's not natural."

A low, distant growl echoed through the gorge, sending a chill down their spines.

Kael stood, gripping his sword. "Well, there's our answer. Let's hope it's friendly."

---

Ambush in the Gorge

The group pressed on cautiously, the walls of the gorge closing in around them. The growling grew louder, reverberating off the stone.

Suddenly, from the shadows ahead, a massive creature lunged into view. Its body was a twisted amalgamation of fur, claws, and jagged bone, its eyes glowing with an unnatural red light.

"Definitely not friendly!" Kael shouted, raising his sword.

The beast roared, its breath visible in the cold air, and charged at them.

Seris leapt into action, her blades flashing as she slashed at the creature's flank. "Focus on its weak points!"

Lyra hurled her daggers, aiming for the creature's eyes. One struck true, but the beast barely flinched.

Amara raised the pendant, its light flaring as she tried to channel its energy. The creature recoiled slightly but didn't retreat.

A Tactical Struggle

Kael moved to block the creature's path, his sword meeting its claws in a shower of sparks. "This thing's tough!" he called out, dodging a swipe.

Lyra darted around the beast, trying to find an opening. "It's not just tough—it's unnatural. Look at its bones!"

Amara's gaze locked onto the jagged bones protruding from the creature's back. They seemed to pulse with dark energy, similar to the Whisperer's aura.

"It's been corrupted!" she shouted. "The Whisperer's influence is all over it!"

Seris dodged another attack, her expression grim. "Then we need to end this quickly. Amara, focus the light on those bones!"

---

Amara's Bold Move

Summoning her courage, Amara stepped forward, the pendant glowing brighter in her hands. She focused its energy, directing a beam of light toward the creature's back.

The beast howled in agony as the light struck the corrupted bones, causing them to crack and splinter.

"Keep it up!" Kael shouted, driving his sword into the creature's side.

The creature thrashed wildly, its movements growing more erratic. Lyra and Seris worked in tandem, striking at its legs to weaken it further.

With one final surge of energy, Amara unleashed a powerful burst of light, shattering the corrupted bones completely. The beast let out a final, guttural roar before collapsing to the ground, motionless.

Aftermath

The group stood in silence, catching their breath as the echoes of the battle faded.

Kael nudged the creature with his boot. "That was… unpleasant."

Lyra knelt beside the beast, examining its remains. "The corruption ran deep. If the Whisperer can do this to a creature, imagine what she could do to a person."

Amara shivered at the thought. "We need to keep moving. The longer we stay here, the more vulnerable we are."

Seris nodded, her expression resolute. "Agreed. This was a warning. The Whisperer is testing us, trying to wear us down. We can't let her succeed."

As they continued their journey, the group couldn't shake the unease that lingered from the encounter. The Whisperer's reach was growing, and the challenges ahead would only become more daunting.
