Chapter 20 - The City of Elyria

Maya ran for hours, finally navigating her way out of the dense foliage of the forest. Bursting into view was the village camp, and standing there was their former group leader, Big Tom. On seeing her, he was shocked.

After escaping the wolf pack, the remaining members of the group had gotten back together. Noticing both Maya and Leo's absence, they went looking for them but didn't find any traces. However, they did find the corpse of the alpha wolf. Seeing the body, they assumed that Maya and Leo had encountered a much more terrifying beast, leading them to conclude that they were probably dead.

So one could imagine Big Tom's shock on seeing Maya running out of the forest. She looked haggard but, from the look of things, wasn't injured. Big Tom quickly rushed to her side. "What happened? Where's Leo?" he asked, concern painting his face.

"We were attacked. I don't think he made it," she answered, her eyes moist with tears. Looking at her sorry figure, Big Tom couldn't help but feel bad for her as he consoled, "It was not your fault." He directed her to the rest of the group.

It turned out she appeared at the right time, as the cohort was about to leave for the city. They had acquired the gene cores they all needed. All of them were sad when they heard about Leo, especially Sarah, as she and Leo were getting quite close.

Despite their mourning, they still got going, as they needed to reach the city before dusk.

Few Hours Later...

After waiting in a long queue, they finally arrived at the colossal gate of the city. The colossal gate towered before them, a masterpiece of cyber engineering and mechanized splendor. Giant, interlocking gears and pistons gleamed in the dim light, casting intricate shadows on the vast metal surface. Each section of the gate, crafted from titanium alloys, seemed to hum with an energy, almost alive with mechanical prowess.

Intricate patterns of circuitry traced their way across the gate, pulsating with a faint blue light, hinting at the technological marvels that lay within. Above, colossal turrets and sentry drones hovered, ready to defend the city's secrets. The massive gate's surface was adorned with ancient glyphs etched into the metal, a fusion of the city's rich history and its advanced tech.

When the gate began to open, the sound resonated like a deep, metallic thunder, the gears turning with precise, powerful movements, revealing a glimpse of the vibrant, bustling metropolis that lay beyond its formidable entrance.

This mechanized gate wasn't just an entryway; it was a monument to innovation and a sentinel of the city's glory. What kind of adventures awaited beyond those gates? they all thought, their blood boiling with excitement.

Quickly, the city enforcers came into view. As it was their turn to pass, they all presented their gene cores. Nodding, the enforcer collected the cores into a pouch, giving way for them to pass. As they walked into the city, they were in awe of the sight that lay before their eyes—well, all of them except Maya, as she was used to this scene.

Crossing the colossal gate, the vast cityscape unfurled like a boundless realm of wonder and innovation. Towering skyscrapers, their facades shimmering with holographic advertisements and neon lights, stretched upwards to kiss the heavens, while floating platforms and hovering vehicles crisscrossed the sky in a symphony of movement and light.

The streets below teemed with cyber-enhanced citizens, each one a fusion of organic and synthetic, their bodies adorned with bioluminescent tattoos and augmented limbs. Marketplaces buzzed with the vibrant energy of traders, their wares an eclectic mix of futuristic gadgets and ancient relics.

Alongside the urban sprawl, nature had been artfully integrated, with bioluminescent trees and vertical gardens that pulsed with life. The city's infrastructure was a marvel of engineering, with translucent walkways and gravity-defying bridges that connected the different districts, creating a seamless flow of movement and energy.

At the heart of the city, an enormous arc reactor hummed with power, a symbol of the limitless energy harnessed from both technological prowess and the manipulation of dimensional forces. The skyline was punctuated by grand temples and cyber-shrines, where the mystical and the mechanical converged in a harmonious blend of faith and innovation.

As they stood at the threshold, the enormity of the city as big as a nation sprawled before their eyes, a testament to the boundless creativity and ingenuity of its inhabitants. Welcome to the heart of the future, where dimensions merged and technology reigned supreme. What part of this colossal city caught their eye first? Of course, it was the fact that made gods were everywhere. As far as their eyes could see, everyone in the city was a made god, children exempted, of course. After all, children beneath the age of sixteen could not be augmented.

As they stood in front of the city, a man came up to them and greeted them. "Newcomers, I presume? Good, now you understand why the entry fee into the city is seven gene cores. It is a form of payment for your augmentation. Only made gods are allowed to be citizens of Elyria." The man's way of talking was crude, as he cut straight to the point. It was obvious he didn't regard them highly, seeing them as mere village bumpkins who had managed to find their way into the city.

He proceeded to take them to the facility where they could commence their augmentations, apart from Maya, who had long vanished into the crowd, making her way back to her family's district. While the rest were too occupied with their surroundings, they barely noticed her absence. Finally, they had made it, they all thought.

Meanwhile, in the House of Night Region...

The House of Night Cyber Castle rose ominously against the skyline, its dark, gothic architecture fused with cutting-edge technology. Towering spires and sharp turrets were cloaked in a shroud of perpetual twilight, giving the castle an otherworldly aura. Holographic gargoyles perched on the edges, their eyes glowing with a sinister light, constantly scanning for intruders.

As you entered the castle, the air felt charged with energy, the soft hum of machinery blending with the low, eerie whispers of ancient secrets. The walls were lined with arcane runes interwoven with neon circuitry, casting an ethereal glow that danced across the stone floors.

Deep within the labyrinthine corridors, we found the scarred-face man. His hardened features told a story of countless battles and hardships. With an air of grim determination, he carried Leo, his steps echoing through the dimly lit passageways. Leo's unconscious form was a stark contrast to the cold, metallic surroundings, his presence a flicker of vulnerability in a fortress of power.

The man approached the conference room, a grand hall adorned with digital tapestries and floating holograms depicting the family's storied legacy. The room was dominated by a long, obsidian table surrounded by towering thrones that seemed to pulse with an inner light. As he stepped inside, the atmosphere grew tense, the weight of tradition and authority palpable in the air.

Seated around the table were the family elders, their faces obscured by shadows, their eyes glinting with ancient wisdom and technological prowess. They were the guardians of the castle's secrets, the keepers of its legacy. The scarred-face man bowed slightly, a gesture of respect, as he prepared to present Leo to them, seeking their counsel and guidance in the matter at hand.

This was not just a meeting; it was a pivotal moment, where the past, present, and future converged in the heart of the House of Night Cyber Castle. What would happen next?
