The fact of the matter was that Alaric and Nick couldn't quite predict what was going to happen with the shifter gnomes.
They had decided that they could just travel the world, which would have been ok with everyone, but…
Those gnomes were peculiar.
After all, those gnomes were perverted, and not only that, but they got up to mischief.
And so, even though Alaric and Nick didn't want to take responsibility for them, for those gnomes were not of their tribe, they still stood there before the guard house, as gnome after gnome was rushed in wagons to be carted off to a work camp.
That work camp was nothing short of 24-7 labor.
The gnomes would have to chip at ore. They would have to, of course, make absolutely sure that their houses were clean, and that the village near the mine was also in good order.
