Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Metapod

"Jenny!"

"Coconut Egg!"

"Ya!"

Gary's Pokémon weren't thrilled about his training plans, but they had no choice but to follow his lead. However, one Pokémon seemed particularly resistant.

"Caterpie, why aren't you listening?" Gary asked, his tone growing curious as he noticed the Bug-type hadn't responded to him.

Caterpie remained silent, staring at the sky. Without warning, it began to spew strands of silk into the air. The silky threads cascaded down like a fountain, enveloping Caterpie in a cocoon. A brilliant glow of evolution surrounded it, and within moments, its body morphed into a crescent shape.

When the light faded, Caterpie had evolved into a shiny, orange Metapod—distinctly different from the ordinary green Metapod.

Gary quickly pulled out his Pokédex, a device created by Professor Oak that not only recorded Pokémon data but also took photos. Recording the evolution of a shiny Pokémon was a rare and memorable moment, and Gary wasn't going to miss it.

After evolving, Metapod tilted its hardened body toward Gary as though expressing gratitude.

"So that's what it was," Gary said, understanding now why Caterpie hadn't evolved before. "You didn't have enough energy stored up."

Thanks to the special Bug-type feed Gary had prepared and the addition of high-quality energy blocks, Caterpie had accumulated enough energy to evolve directly into Metapod.

"Since you've evolved, you're done for today," Gary said, recalling Metapod into its Poké Ball. He had initially planned to use Caterpie to train Exeggutor's Hypnosis move, but now that it had evolved, that plan no longer seemed appropriate. Instead, he decided to focus on keeping Metapod healthy and ready for its next evolution into Butterfree.

Bug-type Pokémon were known for their unique energy properties, which made them resistant to psychic attacks. This made them ideal for training moves like Hypnosis. However, with Metapod out of the picture, Gary turned to Exeggutor.

"Exeggutor, since we're short a training partner, you'll join Squirtle's group. Help Squirtle by using Confusion to enhance the power and accuracy of its Water Gun attack."

Exeggutor nodded in agreement, but Scyther, who had been observing, seemed dissatisfied. Its pride had taken a hit after its recent defeat in training.

"Scyther, you're looking for extra training? Fine, bring it on," Gary said, noticing Scyther's eagerness.

Exeggutor glanced at Scyther, sensing its competitive spirit, but remained unbothered. Today's battle had been easy, and Exeggutor saw no reason to worry about Scyther's emotions.

A New Day

The next morning, Gary woke up early. A day's success, he believed, began in the morning.

After a quick breakfast, he urged his Pokémon to start their training routine. Because they were in the wild, Gary kept the sessions short, with fifteen minutes of activity followed by a rest. He also ensured at least one Pokémon was kept in top condition in case of an emergency.

Following the training, Gary prepared food for his team. The Pokémon, particularly Squirtle, Metapod, and Exeggutor, eagerly devoured the specially formulated feed. Seeing them enjoy the meal so much, Gary felt a sense of pride in his skills as a breeder.

As he ate his own simple instant meal, the familiar chime of the system in his head caught his attention.

[Ding! Mission completed. Rewards have been distributed to your space backpack.]

Gary checked his inventory and noticed that the number of low-level Rare Candies had increased from 13 to 23. These candies were essential for leveling up his Pokémon, and he planned to use them strategically.

Squirtle's Growth

During their travels, Gary encountered several rookie Trainers, most of whom were eager to battle. Gary welcomed their challenges, using these opportunities to train Squirtle.

By the end of the morning, Squirtle had gained significant experience and reached level 13. With only three more levels to go before it could evolve, Gary felt confident that Squirtle would soon achieve its first evolution.

"Lunch time," Gary announced as noon approached.

He prepared food for his Pokémon and let them out to enjoy the fresh air. Metapod seemed particularly happy to be outside, and Gary smiled, knowing how important these moments were for his team's morale.

Seeking a Pidgeotto

After lunch, Gary set out again, this time with a specific goal: to find and capture a high-potential Pidgey or Pidgeotto. He even released Metapod, hoping its presence might attract a hungry Pidgeotto.

Pidgeotto were known predators of Metapod, often carrying them high into the sky before dropping them to crack open their tough shells. Gary reasoned that by using Metapod as bait, he might draw out a strong Pidgeotto worth capturing.

However, by evening, his efforts had yielded no results. No Pidgey or Pidgeotto appeared, let alone one with high potential.

Gary sighed. "Looks like I'll have to try again tomorrow morning. The early bird catches the worm, after all."

He decided to rest for the night, letting his Pokémon recover from the day's activities.

Nearing the Forest's Edge

Two days later, Gary was nearing the edge of Viridian Forest. Despite his efforts, he hadn't found a single Pidgey or Pidgeotto with gym-level potential.

"This is tougher than I thought," Gary admitted to himself.

High-potential Pokémon were rare, and he was beginning to understand just how much effort it would take to build a championship-level team. Still, he wasn't discouraged. If anything, the challenge only fueled his determination.

As he prepared to leave the forest, Gary glanced at Metapod, who was resting quietly in its Poké Ball. He knew that soon, it would evolve into a Butterfree, adding a valuable new member to his team.

"Let's keep moving," Gary said, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

---

Gary's journey was far from over, but with each step, he was growing stronger—alongside his Pokémon. The road to becoming a Pokémon Master was long and full of obstacles, but Gary knew he was on the right path.
