Chereads / Death Mage in Another World / Chapter 8 - The Paths We Choose

Chapter 8 - The Paths We Choose

Kai leaned casually against the wall, his trademark smirk in place as he declared, "I'll be on my own. I'm going to explore this world, figure out what's out there, and get stronger in my own way."

The room fell into a brief silence as his classmates processed his words. Then the voices erupted.

Sean frowned, stepping forward. "You're just going to leave us? Come on, Kai. We've been through all this together. Why split up now?"

Liam crossed his arms, his concern clear. "This world is dangerous. You really think you can handle it all on your own?"

Another classmate chimed in, shaking their head. "I don't know, Kai. Strength in numbers, right? What if you run into something you can't handle?"

Kai shrugged, his tone light but firm. "Relax, guys. I've got my magic, my undead, and my charming personality. I'll be fine. Besides, this isn't goodbye forever."

A quieter voice from the group spoke up. "I… I think I'd like to find a safe place. Somewhere to live peacefully. This whole adventuring thing isn't really for me."

Another classmate nodded in agreement. "Yeah, same. I'm not cut out for fighting monsters or exploring dungeons. I'd rather settle down, maybe learn about this world's history or magic."

"Not me," a more confident voice declared. "I want to be an adventurer! You know, take on epic quests, fight monsters, become famous. That's what we're here for, right?"

The room erupted in more opinions:

"We should try to find a way home. Isn't that the whole point?"

"What if there isn't a way back? We need to focus on surviving here."

"Maybe we can join a guild or find a mentor to help us."

"I just want to figure out what's going on with our powers."

Sean rubbed his temples, looking overwhelmed. "Alright, alright. Everyone's got their own ideas. We can't do all of this at once."

Liam glanced at Kai. "What about you? Are you seriously just going to wander off?"

Kai nodded, his red eyes gleaming with determination. "Yep. Like I said, this is something I need to do my way. You guys figure out what you want, and I'll do the same."

Elara, who had been silently observing from the side, finally spoke. "You're all over the place," she said, her voice sharp. "None of you seem to have a clear plan. And you, Kai… wandering off on your own might work for now, but it's reckless. You're powerful, but you're not invincible."

Kai turned to her, his grin widening into something almost mischievous. "Not invincible? Captain, did you forget? I'm immortal. Literally. I can't die."

Elara's green eyes narrowed as she crossed her arms, clearly unimpressed. "Immortal doesn't mean invulnerable. You can still get hurt, make mistakes, or worse—endanger others with your arrogance."

Kai chuckled, leaning closer to her, his voice playful but with an undertone of sincerity. "Fair point, Captain. But don't worry, I've got this. Besides, isn't it your job to keep people like me in check?"

Her frown deepened, and for a moment, she seemed at a loss for words. "Just don't let your overconfidence get you killed. Immortal or not, you're not invincible."

The rest of the group exchanged uneasy glances as the tension between them grew. Kai finally leaned back, throwing his hands up in mock surrender. "Fine, fine. I'll be careful—just for you, Captain."

Her glare could have melted steel, but she turned away without another word, redirecting her focus to the group. "The rest of you need to think carefully about your next steps. This isn't a game. The decisions you make now will shape your survival in this world."

The room fell quiet as her words sank in, and each person began reflecting on their own path. Kai, meanwhile, was already planning his first move, the thrill of adventure glinting in his eyes.

Kai stood at the center of the room, his arms crossed, a serious expression on his face. His usual playful demeanor was replaced by something more focused as he looked around at his classmates and friends. He took a deep breath and began, calling out their names one by one.

"Sean, Liam, Emily, Marcus, Mia, Tyler, Chloe, Ethan, Olivia, Ryan, Sophia, Daniel, Hannah, Jack, and Ava," he said, his voice steady but commanding. "All of you, look me in the eye. Right now."

His classmates, caught off guard by his tone, turned their attention to him. Kai's red eyes seemed to glow with intensity as he continued, "Tell me, what do you really want to do in this world? This isn't just some dream or a game. We've been thrown into a place of magic and swords, danger and opportunity. So, no more vague ideas or half-hearted plans. I want to know—what do you *really* want to do?"

The room fell silent for a moment as everyone processed his words. Then, Sean stepped forward, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "I… I guess I want to get stronger," he admitted. "I don't want to just survive here. I want to be able to protect myself and the people I care about."

Liam nodded, his expression firm. "Same here. But I also want to figure out what's going on with this world. Why were we brought here? What's the bigger picture? There has to be more to this than just surviving."

Emily, standing near the back, hesitated before speaking. "I… I don't know if I'm cut out for fighting. But maybe I can learn magic? Something that doesn't involve swords or violence. I just want to help in my own way."

Marcus grinned, crossing his arms. "I want to be an adventurer! Take on quests, fight monsters, and maybe make a name for myself. This place is like a dream come true for me."

Mia, fidgeting with her sleeves, added quietly, "I think… I think I want to find a safe place. Somewhere we can live peacefully. All this fighting and chaos… it's too much. I just want to feel safe."

Tyler leaned against the wall, his expression thoughtful. "I agree with Sean and Liam. Getting stronger and figuring out why we're here should be the priority. But honestly? I think I want to explore this world. There's so much out there we don't know."

The room buzzed with murmurs as others began to chime in, echoing similar sentiments. Some wanted strength, others craved knowledge, while a few simply wanted peace. Kai watched them all carefully, his expression unreadable, before he finally spoke again.

"Alright," he said, his tone softer now. "Those are good answers. Honest answers. And that's what matters. You need to know what you're aiming for in this world. If you don't, you'll get lost—literally and figuratively."

He glanced at Sean and Liam. "Getting stronger? That's solid. You're going to need it. This world isn't going to wait for you to figure things out."

He turned to Emily and Mia. "Magic and peace? You can find those, but don't underestimate what it takes to achieve them. Peace might mean fighting for it."

Finally, he looked at Marcus and Tyler. "Adventuring and exploring? That's where the fun is. But don't let the excitement blind you to the dangers out there."

Kai straightened, his smirk returning. "Now you know what you want. Good. Hold onto that. Because no matter what happens, those goals are what will keep you moving forward."

Kai stretched his arms lazily, looking out the window as sunlight poured into the room. With a grin, he turned back to the group. "Well, look at that. It's still morning. Plenty of time for some fun."

His red eyes gleamed as they landed on Elara. "Hey, Elara," he called out casually, "where's the adventuring guild?"

Elara, standing near the door with her arms crossed, raised an eyebrow. "The adventuring guild is in the central district, near the market square," she replied curtly, her tone sharp but polite. "Why?"

Kai's grin widened mischievously as he took a step closer. "Oh, no reason," he said, his voice dripping with playful sarcasm. Then, in a dramatic flourish, he bent forward in an exaggerated bow. "But, my dear Captain, would you do me the honor of showing me the way?"

Elara's face turned a deep shade of red, not from embarrassment but from anger and irritation. Her hands clenched into fists at her sides as she glared at him. "You… you insufferable idiot! Why would I waste my time guiding *you* anywhere? Find it yourself!"

Kai burst into laughter, straightening up and wiping an imaginary tear from his eye. "Oh, come on, Captain. You'd make such a great tour guide! Think about it. You'd get to show me all the sights and make sure I don't cause any trouble."

Elara's glare intensified, her voice rising slightly. "The last thing this city needs is *you* causing more chaos. Just go before I lose my patience entirely."

Kai chuckled, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. No need to get so worked up. I'll find it myself. But you'll miss out on all the fun," he teased, flashing her one last grin before turning toward the door.

Behind him, Elara muttered under her breath, "How does someone like him even exist?"

Sean, watching from the side, shook his head with an exasperated sigh. "Seriously, Kai? Do you *have* to push her buttons every single time?"

Liam leaned against the wall, smirking. "It's like watching a cat poke a sleeping bear. You know it's going to end badly, but you can't look away."

Emily covered her mouth, trying to stifle a giggle. "He's going to get himself into trouble one of these days."

Mia, standing next to her, nodded nervously. "I don't know how he gets away with it. If I were Elara, I'd probably throw him out a window."

Marcus, on the other hand, was laughing openly. "Come on, you've got to admit it's funny. Did you see her face? She looked like she was about to explode!"

Tyler crossed his arms, rolling his eyes. "Funny until she actually explodes. One of these days, Kai's going to push her too far."

Kai turned back to them, still grinning. "Relax, guys. The Captain loves me. She just doesn't know it yet."

Elara's glare shot to him like a dagger. "I heard that, Kai. And no, I don't."

The group burst into laughter, the tension in the room easing slightly as Elara shook her head in frustration, muttering to herself as she stormed out. "Unbelievable."
