Chereads / Death Mage in Another World / Chapter 14 - Sparks of Trust

Chapter 14 - Sparks of Trust

Kai leaned casually against the wall, his crimson eyes glinting with amusement as he glanced at Elara. "Don't you have knight captain duties to attend to for the city?" he asked, his tone teasing.

Elara's eyes narrowed, her hands instinctively moving to her hips as a sharp glare formed on her face. "Excuse me?" she said, her voice low but brimming with irritation. "You think I'm not doing my job because I'm here making sure you don't turn this place into complete chaos?"

Kai smirked, clearly unfazed. "I'm just saying, Captain, the city won't run itself. You might have more important things to deal with than babysitting me."

That was the last straw. Elara stepped closer, her voice rising as she pointed a finger at Kai. "You arrogant little—! Do you have any idea how much damage you've already caused since you arrived here? I have knights reporting all over the city about the aftermath of your 'heroics.' Do you think cleaning up after you isn't part of my duties?"

Kai held up his hands in mock surrender, his smirk unwavering. "Hey, hey, no need to get so worked up, Captain. I'm just trying to help, you know."

"Help?!" Elara practically yelled, her frustration boiling over. "Summoning undead in the middle of the inn is your idea of helping? Scaring your own allies? How is that helpful?"

Kai shrugged, his tone turning serious for a moment. "Look, I get it. You think I'm reckless. But I'm not some kid playing with magic I don't understand. I'm new to this world, sure, but I know what I'm doing."

Elara scoffed, crossing her arms. "That's the problem, Kai. You think you know everything. Your overconfidence is going to get someone hurt—or worse."

Kai's smirk softened slightly, his eyes meeting hers with a rare hint of sincerity. "I'm not trying to make your life harder, Elara. I'm just trying to figure out my place here."

For a moment, Elara's expression softened, her anger subsiding into something closer to concern. "And you think this is the way to do it? By acting like the rules don't apply to you?"

Kai exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Maybe. Or maybe I just don't see the point in following rules that limit what I can do. This world is dangerous. If I don't push myself, how am I supposed to survive?"

Elara stared at him, her green eyes studying his face as if searching for any hint of humility. "You're powerful, Kai, I'll give you that. But power without discipline is a liability. If you want to survive, you need to learn that you're not invincible."

Kai chuckled, the smirk returning to his lips. "You sound like a teacher giving a lecture."

Elara's glare returned full force. "And you sound like a reckless idiot who doesn't know when to listen!"

The room fell silent as the tension between them hung in the air. Finally, Kai raised his hands in defeat. "Alright, alright. You've made your point, Captain. I'll try to tone it down."

Elara raised an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "You'll try?"

Kai grinned. "What can I say? Old habits die hard."

Elara shook her head, letting out a frustrated sigh. "You're impossible. Just... don't make me regret giving you even a shred of trust."

Kai's smirk widened as he straightened up. "Wait, wait, hold on—did you just admit you have a shred of trust in me? Hey, we're getting there! I like it. Next thing I know, you'll be giving me compliments."

Elara's face turned red, a mix of anger and embarrassment flashing in her green eyes. "Don't flatter yourself!" she snapped. "That wasn't a compliment—it was a warning."

Kai chuckled, leaning against the wall with mock innocence. "Sure, sure, Captain. But you know, you're sounding a little softer now. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone you're warming up to me."

Elara's fists clenched at her sides, her voice rising. "Warming up to you?! Are you delusional? If anything, you're making me question why I even bother trying to keep you in line!"

Kai tilted his head, his tone playful. "Because deep down, you know I'm not so bad. Admit it—you'd miss me if I wasn't around to brighten your day."

Elara groaned, throwing her hands in the air. "Brighten my day?! Kai, you're like a storm that shows up out of nowhere, wrecks everything, and then acts like it was all part of some grand plan!"

Kai laughed. "A storm, huh? I'll take that as a compliment. Storms are powerful, after all."

Elara glared at him, pointing an accusatory finger. "You are *not* a storm. You're a nuisance. An annoying, reckless, impossible nuisance."

Kai leaned closer, grinning. "Aw, you're making me blush, Captain."

Elara's patience snapped, and she yelled, "Kai! I swear, if you don't stop teasing me, I'll punch you again!"

The rest of the room, watching the exchange, could barely contain their laughter. Sean whispered to Liam, "This is better than any drama I've ever seen."

Liam nodded, smirking. "You think she'll actually punch him again?"

Kai, ignoring the commentary, raised his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright, no need to resort to violence, Captain. I get it—you're just not ready to admit how much you appreciate me."

Elara's face turned an even deeper shade of red, and she took a deep breath, clearly trying to calm herself. "Appreciate you? The only thing I appreciate is when you *don't* make my job harder."

Kai shrugged, his grin never fading. "Hey, baby steps. At least you're thinking about it."

Elara groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose. "You're going to be the death of me, Kai."

Kai chuckled, his tone light. "Not a chance, Captain. If anything, I'll keep you on your toes. You know, balance out your overly serious knight life."

Elara gave him a long, exasperated look before turning away, muttering under her breath. "Why do I even bother..."

Kai gave her a mock salute. "Yes, ma'am."

Elara rolled her eyes, turning on her heel and walking away, muttering under her breath about "arrogant mages" and "constant headaches."

The next morning, sunlight streamed through the windows of the inn as Kai adjusted his cloak and prepared to head out. He was heading to the guild for another mission, but as he reached the door, he found himself stopped by a familiar group. His friends and classmates were gathered in the lobby, waiting for him.

Sean stepped forward first, grinning. "Leaving so soon, Kai? You weren't going to ditch us without saying goodbye, were you?"

Kai smirked, leaning casually against the doorframe. "What, you guys planning a surprise party or something?"

Liam rolled his eyes. "Hardly. We just figured you should know—we're heading out today."

Kai raised an eyebrow, his smirk fading slightly. "Heading out?"

Sarah nodded, stepping up beside Liam. "Yeah. We've all been talking about it, and it's time for us to start our own journeys. We can't stay in this inn forever."

The group murmured in agreement, their faces showing a mix of excitement and nervousness. Kai crossed his arms, glancing at each of them. "You sure you're ready for this?"

Sean grinned. "We've got to be, right? You've already shown us what's possible in this world. Now it's our turn to see what we can do."

Liam chimed in, his tone more serious. "We can't rely on you forever, Kai. You've got your own path to follow, and we've got ours."

Kai leaned back, his crimson eyes flickering with curiosity. "Fair enough. So, where are you all headed?"

Alex spoke up from the back of the group. "Some of us are thinking of joining smaller guilds in nearby towns. Others want to explore and see what opportunities are out there."

Sarah added, her voice steady. "We're going to stick together for as long as we can, but we all know that might not last forever."

Kai nodded, a small smile playing at his lips. "You've got guts. I'll give you that."

Sean laughed. "Well, someone's got to keep up with you, right?"

Kai chuckled, shaking his head. "Good luck with that."

The atmosphere shifted slightly as the group started to share their individual plans.

"I'm going to focus on learning more about magic," Sarah said. "This world has so much to offer, and I don't want to waste the opportunity."

"I want to train as a swordsman," Alex added. "Maybe join a local militia or find a mentor who can teach me."

Liam crossed his arms. "Exploring sounds good to me. There's got to be more to this world than forests and cities."

Sean grinned. "And I'm going to become the best adventurer this world has ever seen. Just wait—I'll have stories to rival yours, Kai."

Kai smirked. "Looking forward to it."

As the conversation continued, the group shared laughs, nervous smiles, and a few lingering doubts. Finally, Sarah turned to Kai, her expression softening. "Thanks, Kai. For everything. You've been a huge inspiration to all of us."

Kai shrugged, his smirk turning into a genuine smile. "Don't mention it. Just try not to get yourselves killed, alright?"

Sean clapped him on the shoulder. "You too, man. Knowing you, trouble's probably already waiting for you at the guild."

Kai laughed. "Wouldn't have it any other way."

The group exchanged their final goodbyes, and as they stepped out of the inn to begin their journey, Kai watched them go, a rare flicker of pride in his eyes. He adjusted his cloak, muttering to himself, "Guess it's time to see what the guild's got for me today." With that, he turned and headed out, his next adventure waiting just around the corner.

Kai walked through the bustling streets of the city, the morning sun casting a warm glow on the cobblestone roads. His crimson eyes scanned the familiar sights, but his thoughts were elsewhere. He was thinking about his friends and classmates who had set out on their own journeys.

"They've got guts," Kai muttered to himself, a small smile forming on his face. "Sean's aiming to be the best adventurer, Sarah's diving into magic, and Liam wants to explore. They're finally taking their first steps in this world. Can't say I'm not proud of them."

He adjusted his cloak as he continued walking. "Still, it's weird not having them around. Guess that just means I'll have to make the most of my own adventures." He paused, watching a few street vendors setting up their stalls. "Here's hoping they don't get into too much trouble. But if they do, well... I'll be there to bail them out."

By the time Kai reached the guild, his mood had shifted from reflective to eager. Pushing open the heavy wooden doors, he was greeted by the lively chatter of adventurers and the faint smell of ale from the guild bar. His eyes immediately landed on Lyra, who was working at her usual spot behind the counter.

"Hey, Lyra!" Kai called out, waving as he approached.

Lyra's orange ears twitched, and she glanced up from the stack of papers in front of her. Her green eyes narrowed slightly before softening into a smile. "Kai. Back again so soon?"

Kai grinned, leaning casually on the counter. "Miss me already?"

Lyra rolled her eyes, though the corner of her mouth twitched in amusement. "Hardly. And don't think I've forgotten about yesterday—twenty goblins and a leader? You're lucky you came back in one piece."

Kai chuckled. "You seemed pretty impressed when you handed me my reward."

Lyra sighed, her tail flicking behind her. "Impressed isn't the word I'd use. Concerned is more like it. You're already pushing your limits, and you've only just started."

Kai shrugged. "That's how you get stronger, right? Anyway, I'm here for my second mission. Got anything interesting for me?"

Lyra gestured toward the mission board across the room. "Plenty to choose from. Just make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew this time."

Kai laughed as he walked over to the board. "Don't worry, Lyra. I've got this."

The board was filled with neatly written mission slips, each one detailing a task for adventurers. Kai scanned the postings, his eyes moving from one to the next as he muttered to himself.

Kai's eyes lingered on the Bronze missions before grabbing the slip for the "Wild Boar Rampage" mission. "This one looks fun," he said to himself, turning back toward Lyra.

He held the mission slip up for her to see. "What do you think about this one?"

Lyra glanced at the slip, her green eyes scanning the details carefully. "Wild Boar Rampage? Hmm." She tapped her chin with a clawed finger. "A bit more dangerous than most E-rank missions, but it's manageable if you're careful."

She read the details aloud: "Stop a wild boar causing havoc in the farmlands. It's been destroying crops and endangering farmers. Eliminate the threat. Reward: 35 gold coins and boar meat." Lyra's ears twitched as she handed the slip back. "It's straightforward enough, but wild boars can be unpredictable, especially ones big enough to be a mission target."

Kai smirked, tucking the slip into his pocket. "Unpredictable sounds like my kind of challenge."

Lyra glanced at the slip he held and nodded. "A safer choice. Maybe you're finally learning."

Kai smirked. "Don't count on it. I'm just warming up."

Lyra rolled her eyes, but her tone softened. "Just make sure you come back in one piece, alright?"

Kai gave her a mock salute. "You got it." With that, he tucked the mission slip into his pocket and headed out the door, ready to tackle his next task.
