Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 “Death’s Countdown”

Lucian looked for anything to hide behind and finally found an old wooden crate.

Perfect!

Quickly climbing up the side of the box, Lucian peeked over the edge, watching as two men walked past him. One was carrying a lantern, and the other had a sack filled with food.

Damn, they didn't see me.

Lucian silently thanked god for listening to his prayers. He remained still, waiting for either of them to turn around and notice him hiding in the darkness.

After several minutes passed without incident, Lucian decided to risk jumping off the crate and running along the corridor. Before he could make it far, however, Lucian felt something grab hold of his leg.

His heart jumped as he tried desperately to shake himself loose. When nothing worked, Lucian kicked and punched wildly, trying to knock whoever was grabbing him off. Finally, after much struggling, the grip loosened slightly, allowing Lucian to slip away.

Whew! That was close!

Running as fast as possible, Lucian hid behind a nearby corner. There were plenty of places to run to now. However, Lucian had no clue where he should go. The Mansion seemed endless.

Even though he was getting closer to the exit, he couldn't help but wonder why the monster hadn't followed him. Was the monster too big to move around in this space?

Did it need more room than normal spiders? Lucian continued to run until he came across a door marked with a large X.

Before Lucian had the chance, he heard two people talking outside the door. They sounded angry.

"What happened!? Where are the supplies!?"

"They're gone! Someone stole them! And I can't find anyone else in here!"

"Whoa...someone has already gotten in here?"

Lucian froze. Should I try to sneak in or wait? Wait...what am I thinking? I'm being stupid!

If I keep standing here, I'll lose my chances of escaping!

Sprinting forward, Lucian darted through the open doorway and closed it behind him. He took a quick look around to ensure nobody saw him enter, then turned around and sprinted down the hallways.

Finally! Now I can get outta here!

His excitement faded when he noticed that he had entered a dead end. A single staircase led downward.

"Ugh, is there no normal hallway?"

Lucian groaned and started walking down the steps.

At the bottom of the stairway, Lucian found what appeared to be a storeroom full of crates stacked neatly against the walls.

Why'd it have to be a dead end?

He sighed and went over to one of the boxes near the center of the room. As Lucian reached out to pull it off its shelf, the top popped open, revealing a small pouch containing a couple of gold coins.

Huh...? What's this doing here?

Lucian grabbed the bag and stuffed it into his pocket. He opened the lid of another box and discovered another pouch with a bit more money inside. Then, he moved on to yet another box...and another...until he finally realized he had stumbled upon the treasure trove.

"Well, well, looks like someone beat me to the punch."

Lucian picked up every single item he could find and quickly stuffed them into his pockets.

Wow, there's quite a lot of stuff here...

A feeling of satisfaction washed over him as he pulled out one final coin purse from under a pile of blankets and placed it in his pants' side pocket.

"Ahh, this feels great..."

With that done, Lucian decided it was time to leave.

"Oh yeah, let me grab those too!"

Taking everything out of the crate, Lucian packed all the items in a single backpack.

Once finished, Lucian stood up and walked towards the exit.

"Hmmm...this doesn't feel right."

Lucian stopped mid-step and turned around. His eyes scanned the area for signs of movement.

"When I return, will all of the gold that I've collected disappear?" Lucian thought aloud.

"Hmm, I'll just have to take it with me until I figure it out. After all, I still need to buy food."

[Quest]

[Kill all the humans and monsters inside the Unkown building, plunder it all]

[Reward: ???]

[Failure: Death…]

What's with this quest?! Sure, there's lots of loot here, but come on! Why does it say 'kill all the humans and monsters'

Does that mean I have to kill that spider-type monster I saw earlier?

Wait...no! That thing isn't human! And besides, I didn't see anyone else here except the two people I saw when I first entered.

Is this quest gonna count as a failure? Does that mean that I won't get paid!?

No!

'That can't happen!'

Thinking fast, Lucian returned to the room where he had found the money. There were plenty of crates; some type of weapon must be assorted in the crates, right?

Of course, I get this quest, and when I don't have any weapons on hand, I'll have to make do with whatever is available, Lucian thought while skimming through the creations and picking up anything that seemed helpful.

After a minute or two of searching, he found a small dagger with a brass hilt and a leather sheath attached to the handle.

"Perfect!"

He took the blade and threw away the rest of the supplies.

Just then, Lucian noticed a sound coming from behind him. He turned around and saw a sizeable spider-like creature crawling closer. Its body was thick fur, and its legs ended in sharp claws. The creature's head resembled a giant crab.

"Shit!"

"Gah!"

Before he could react, the monster leaped at Lucian and knocked him off balance.

"Fwaaaaaaghhhhh!"

Lucian screamed as he hit the floor hard. A moment later, the beast landed on top of him.

"Ugh, this hurts."

"Squeak... Squeek... "

Lucian felt a clawed foot digging into his stomach.

"Nnnggghhhh!"

The creature released a shrill scream as it tried to bite Lucian.

"Eeep!"

The pain forced Lucian to release the dagger, which was now useless at his feet. The creature rolled onto its side and started biting at Lucian's arm to break open a vein.

"Ouch! Stop that! My blood!"

With little strength left, Lucian used his remaining stamina to kick the creature away.

A few moments passed before the beast regained its senses.

"Woof! Woof!"

It jumped away from Lucian and ran to the corner of the room, looking for something to attack.

Lucian quickly stood up, grabbed the knife and stabbed the creature in the leg.

"Ahh... Ow..."

Blood spurted from the wound as the creature yelped.

"Oh yeah, this should work."

Without hesitation, Lucian pulled out the blade and plunged it deep into the creature's chest. As the monster died, Lucian removed the weapon from its body.

I can't stay in the room any longer. I have to keep on the move; my quest is to kill everyone in this building. It's not like I want to die, but it seems unavoidable. Lucian thought as he walked towards the exit door.

What would an assassin do when they make a big noise, killing a target when there are more targets? They'd run away, right?

Unfortunately, I can't run, so let's think of another plan. I know there are at least six more people, as the people I saw earlier were around four or more people, and I saw two when I hid from the spider. But that means that there are three places they might be hiding: one room upstairs, one room downstairs, and one room outside.

Let's check the rooms first since there are fewer people than in the area.

Lucian entered the first room, which was empty. He checked every item in the room, and nothing seemed suspicious except one piece of furniture in the middle.

It was a desk with a chair and a bookcase on the wall across from it.

The bookshelf had many random items stacked and was too high for Lucian to reach. He decided to look through the rest of the rooms to ensure none of the others were there. After checking all the rooms on the ground floor, Lucian headed upstairs.

He opened the door and immediately spotted someone standing in front of him.

"Hmph!"

Lucian drew his dagger and threw it at the person.

The blade struck home, piercing the attacker's shoulder.

"Gah!"

Before the person could react, Lucian swung his dagger, cutting off its head.

"Wha?!"

Another person appeared behind him, and this one attacked Lucian.

"Grr... "

His opponent moved fast, slashing at Lucian's face.

The blow grazed Lucian's cheek, leaving a small cut.

"Shit!"

Lucian blocked the incoming strike with his dagger, letting it slide harmlessly along the metal blade. Then, he counterattacked, stabbing the attacker in the chest.

"Ack... !"

"You should stop moving now."

Lucian pulled out his dagger from the corpse's stomach and threw it at his next opponent.

"Argh!"

Lucian stepped out of the way and kicked the weapon away with his foot.

The dagger struck the wall and fell to the ground.

"Hmph! You're done!" Lucian shouted. Then he noticed that his hand was shaking slightly from adrenaline. He quickly ran to the next room and checked inside. Once again, there wasn't anyone inside. The only item in that room was a table with three chairs. Lucian picked up one of the chairs.

It was heavy, so I didn't think anyone would sit there. The other two chairs are probably for guests and aren't used much. I'll check them later, but I must find more opponents first.

Lucian left that room and moved on to the next one; again, no one was inside. The room had a bed covered with white sheets, a nightstand, and a dresser. A picture frame hung on the wall, and a mirror was attached to the wall above the dresser.

"Hmm..."

Something caught Lucian's attention. It was a ring hanging from a chain. It didn't seem particularly valuable, but it caught Lucian's eye. He took the necklace and examined the ring closely.

"Whoa! This is amazing!"

The ring, which looked to be made of black metal, had a ruby embedded in it. Its design matched the room's other decorations, including a skull and crossbones motif.

The room was meant for men, which explained the lack of women in Lucian's searches.

He put the ring on his finger and admired it. It was warm from being near Lucian's body heat, which must mean it was magical. Lucian smiled. Magical rings are rare and hard to come by, especially since they can often become weapons. They might be helpful later on.

While Lucian was distracted, the door suddenly slammed open.

"Waaaghh!"

"Oh shit!"

Two people charged towards Lucian, knives in their hands.

One of the attackers lunged forward, swinging her knife downward.

Lucian grabbed the attacker's wrist, forcing her dagger to fly past him.

As soon as he saw her dagger fly by, he grabbed her wrist with both hands and twisted her arm to make it bend backwards, pulling her in close. With her other hand, she reached around Lucian's neck and tried to choke him.

Her hand tightened around Lucian's neck and squeezed. He could feel her nails cutting into his skin.

Her eyes were wide and crazed. She must've been pretty desperate to try and kill someone this easily.

Lucian let go of her wrist and grabbed her hand around his neck. He twisted her hand to make it impossible for her to squeeze harder.

He then pushed himself backward, slamming his knee into her face.

Lucian turned around and kicked the man in the back of the knee, sending him tumbling away into a pile of broken glass. He then punched the woman straight in the face with his right fist, causing her nose to break and blood to spew out in a cloud.

The other man who came into the room with her lunged towards Lucian, swinging his knife

Slash- the man swung his knife at Lucian. But before he could land the blow, Lucian stepped aside, kicking the man's legs out from under him.

The man hit the floor headfirst and slid across the ground until he stopped at the foot of Lucian's chair.

With his opponent helpless, Lucian walked over to the fallen man. He picked up his knife and held it up to his ear.

"Hmm, I'm going to take a wild guess and assume those two misters who came before were in charge. These guys are grunts. If they are considered low-level grunts, they aren't even classified as cannon fodder." Lucian thought as he walked over to the next person, that was lying on the floor.

"Hey! What are you doing?!"

The man screamed when he realized what Lucian was planning to do.

"Don't worry, I won't hurt you too much."

Lucian put the tip of the knife between the man's neck,

"I can't leave him alive, but I can't have them screaming; the woman is knocked out, but if I stabbed his heart, he would still be able to make a dying screech. Lucian thought,

Slash- Lucian swung his Knife horizontally through the air, slicing off the man's head. Blood gushed everywhere.

The man's body collapsed onto the ground, twitching violently as it died.

Lucian moved to the following body, the woman who was knocked out from his punch earlier; moving closer to her, he stabbed her in the chest with his blade, piercing her lungs. He pulled it out and threw it to the side.

Blood sprayed across the floor as the woman coughed up more blood than usual. Lucian wiped the blood from his blade and continued walking.

I've explored all of the rooms except the two that I was in when I first came to this mansion: the one where I saw the spider monster with the statues and the one near the door, where I heard them talking about something…

I've checked every nook and cranny in this house, but nothing has happened.

Maybe it's time to try the basement?

I walked down the steps and opened the door.

The room was pitch black except for a small light bulb hanging from the ceiling.

A large metal box was also sitting on top of a table in the center of the room. With a click, the lights turned on, revealing an empty wooden coffin with holes drilled in the sides and covered by sheets.

"What's a human doing here? Go away!"

A voice yelled angrily, and I turned around to look at the voice's owner. He was an older man, well into his seventies, with short grey hair, a scruffy beard, and wrinkled skin that made him look like a mummy.

"Oh my goodness, are you really that stupid?" he shouted, waving his hand around.

"You're not allowed in here, so go home!"

"Wait… wasn't I ordered to kill anyone that made it here?…" The older man said while

Pointing towards me with his finger. His eyes were bloodshot and wild-looking, as if he'd been drinking heavily all night.

"Ahaha~" He started laughing hysterically.

"I guess you will just have to die," the old man said while pulling out his twin daggers that were holstered in his scabbards
