Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Ralph's body hit the floor with a bone-jarring thud. "Ow, ow, ow!" he cried, clutching his ribs. "That's it! I'm putting a no jumping from ventilators clause in my escape plan. Who designed this stupid—oh, right, them."

He struggled to his feet, brushing off the dust that clung to his fur. A faint metallic tang lingered in the air, mixed with the faint hum of machinery. "Note to self," he muttered. "Always land like a superhero. Not like a sack of potatoes."

The room around him was vast and metallic, with smooth, polished floors reflecting the green glow of the overhead lights. The cold beneath his paws sent a shiver up his spine. The walls were lined with towering machinery humming softly, their blinking lights creating an almost hypnotic rhythm. It was a place meant for precision, efficiency, and surveillance—not escape attempts.

"This place screams 'welcome to nowhere,'" Ralph quipped. He stretched his arms, groaning, and limped forward. "Time for Ralph 2.0 to conquer freedom… or break another rib. Either way, it'll be memorable."

Suddenly, the sterile silence was broken by a cold, monotone voice.

"Subject 1348, American Red Wolf. Unauthorized escape attempt detected. This marks your 105th infraction."

Ralph froze, a sly grin creeping onto his face. "Alpha, is that you? My favorite mechanical babysitter! I was wondering when you'd chime in. How's life as a soulless AI treating you?"

"Return to Zone ARW immediately," Alpha replied, unamused.

"But Alpha," Ralph continued, placing a paw on his chest dramatically, "you're going to miss me when I'm gone. Who else will fill your database with witty banter?"

"Warning issued."

Ralph smirked. "You know, you're no fun. You should download a sense of humor. Bet it's on sale somewhere."

Alpha's response was swift. "Sentinels deployed."

The sound of metallic footsteps echoed in the corridor, growing louder. Ralph's grin widened. "Oh, here come the party crashers. Guess my invite got lost in the mail."

Two towering Sentinels emerged from the shadows, their glowing red eyes fixed on him. The sharp hiss of hydraulics and faint whir of servos accompanied their every step, filling the room with an ominous rhythm.

"Good evening, gentlemen!" Ralph said, waving cheerfully. "Lovely night for a stroll, isn't it?"

"Subject 1348, return to Zone ARW," one Sentinel ordered, its voice robotic and devoid of patience.

"Can we skip the formalities? Just call me Ralph," he quipped. "Or 'future escape legend.' Your choice."

When the Sentinels raised their energy weapons, Ralph raised his hands in mock surrender. "Whoa, whoa! No need for violence. I'm allergic to lasers!"

One Sentinel grabbed him by the scruff of his neck like a misbehaving pup. Its metallic grip sent a dull ache down his neck.

"Careful with the fur! It's sensitive," Ralph protested as he was hauled away.

Neo Faunara, a sprawling techno-utopia, was divided into zones dictated by the System for Optimal Coexistence. At its heart lay the Endangered Hybrid Zone (EHZ), where creatures like Ralph lived under the watchful eyes of Sentinels and Alpha. Beyond, the Common Hybrid Zone (CHZ) buzzed with life—overcrowded, underprivileged, but free.

The Preservation Summit was announced annually by Alpha, a gathering of endangered species from across Neo Faunara. Here, each "Zone" presented their numbers and mingled in the hopes of fostering unity—a facade that masked the true goal of control.

Back in Zone ARW, Ralph was unceremoniously dropped into the center of the common area. He landed with another thud and groaned.

"Again, Ralph?" one of the older red wolves sighed, shaking his head. "You're hopeless."

"Hopeless?" Ralph sat up, dusting himself off. "Try relentless. I'm on a mission!"

"A mission to get us all in trouble," another wolf snapped, her tone sharp.

"Come on, guys," Ralph said, climbing onto an uncomfortable iron bench. "We're American red wolves! Survivors! We should stand together and—"

"—and end up like your parents?" the oldest wolf interrupted, his voice sharp as a blade.

Ralph flinched but quickly masked it with a smirk. "At least they tried. What are you doing? Sitting around waiting for Alpha to throw us a party?"

"Lights off," Alpha's voice boomed.

"Goodnight, Alpha! Sweet dreams!" Ralph called, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Warning issued."

The other wolves groaned. "Ralph, just shut up and sleep."

Ralph flopped onto his iron bed, which hovered slightly off the ground with a low hum. The cold metallic surface seeped through his fur. "Someday," he whispered, staring at the dark ceiling, "someday I'm getting out of here. And when I do, I'm gonna—"

"Sleep," another wolf growled.

"Fine, fine," Ralph muttered, closing his eyes.

Ralph was jolted awake by Alpha's voice.

"Subjects, rise and prepare for sustenance allocation."

Ralph yawned, stretching dramatically. "Ah, nothing like being woken up by my favorite tyrant. Good morning, Alpha! Sleep well?"

The wolves filed out, their movements sluggish. Alpha's voice continued, calling each by their assigned number as they approached the food dispensers.

"1348, proceed."

Ralph strutted forward, snatching his tray. The faint smell of synthetic nutrients filled his nose. "Thanks, Alpha. Always so thoughtful."

Later, during breakfast, Alpha made another announcement.

"Subjects, prepare for the Interzone Convergence Event."

Ralph perked up. "Ooh, sounds fancy. What is it, a tea party?"

The elder wolf smacked the back of Ralph's head. "It's the meeting with the other endangered species, idiot. Try not to embarrass us."

The wolves were led into a massive, circular chamber. Holographic screens displayed the names and numbers of arriving groups.

"Zone ARW, American Red Wolves, Numbers 1348 through 1353."

"Zone ACC, Asian Cheetahs, Numbers 212 through 218."

"Zone AVK, Vaquitas, Numbers 1 through 5."

One by one, the endangered hybrids entered, their heads held high—or low, depending on their mood. Ralph watched as the room filled with a colorful array of species.

A kakapo hybrid fluffed his feathers nervously. "First time here?"

"Yeah," a snow leopard hybrid replied. "This place is... something."

"Something depressing," Ralph muttered.

Conversations bubbled up, ranging from awkward introductions to bickering over who was more endangered. Ralph rolled his eyes, muttering, "Future freedom fighters, and we're squabbling over numbers."

Then he saw her—a sleek Asian cheetah hybrid slinking toward the door, her movements careful and deliberate. Ralph's ears perked up.

"Where are you off to, stripes?" he whispered, following her quietly.
