Chereads / EXTINCT: LEGACY OF THE WILD / Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

The air inside the narrow metal corridors was thick and oppressive, the faint hum of Sentinel machinery echoing through the silent halls. Ralph—an American red wolf hybrid with a personality as loud as the metal footsteps that patrolled the area—strode along with an exaggerated bounce in his step, arms swinging in a comical rhythm. If someone were watching him, they'd assume he was on a personal parade.

But Ralph was on a mission.

His mischievous red eyes were fixed on the distant silhouette ahead—a sleek figure moving with the grace of a predator. It was her. The Asian cheetah hybrid. He hadn't seen anyone like her before. Most hybrids around this zone walked with their heads bowed, weighed down by the invisible chains of their so-called "savior," Alpha. Yet here she was, shoulders squared, her sharp gaze focused on something further down the metallic hall.

Where does she think she's going? Ralph wondered with a sly grin.

Suddenly, his confidence betrayed him.

"CLANG!"

Ralph's boot collided with a protruding metal beam, the sound reverberating like a church bell in the quiet corridor. He stumbled, arms flailing, his face twisting into a panicked grimace. "Ow! OW! Stupid wall! Who puts a wall there?!" he muttered, hopping on one leg.

The cheetah froze mid-step and whipped around with lightning speed, her reflexes honed like a finely tuned weapon. Her fists instinctively rose into a defensive stance, and her piercing amber eyes narrowed. "Who are you?!" she hissed, her voice sharp enough to cut steel.

Ralph straightened, ignoring his throbbing foot, and plastered on his most disarming smile. "Whoa, whoa, calm down, speedy. I'm not here to hurt you." He held up his hands in mock surrender. "Though, I am impressed. You've got moves. Ninja stuff, right?"

"Answer me," she snapped, ignoring his rambling. "Who sent you? Was it Alpha?"

At the mention of the name, Ralph's smile faltered, but only for a split second. He quickly replaced it with his usual carefree expression. "Alpha? Pfft, no. Trust me, I'm not one of his little puppets."

She didn't lower her fists.

"Okay, okay, easy there, tiger—err, cheetah," Ralph said, his tone taking on a theatrical flair as he raised an eyebrow. "Look, you're heading towards the sector where the Sentinels patrol like crazy. You do know that, right? One step outta line, and those walking tin cans will crush you like... well, like my dreams of escaping this place."

The cheetah's stance shifted slightly, suspicion still etched across her face. "How do you know where I'm going? Are you following me?"

Ralph let out a bark of laughter—one that echoed way too loudly in the corridor. "Following you? Nah, I just happen to know every miserable corner of this zone. Tried to escape, what... twenty times now? I've lost count. At this point, I know this place better than my own reflection."

She stared at him, unamused.

"I'm serious!" Ralph insisted, spreading his arms wide. "Allow me to introduce myself." He took a deep bow, his unruly red hair falling over his face. "I am Ralph. Future dictator, revolutionary mastermind, and all-around charming rogue." He stepped closer and, in an exaggerated display of chivalry, reached for her hand. "And who might you be, my lady?"

Before she could react, Ralph pressed a quick kiss to the back of her hand, complete with an elegant flourish.

The cheetah blinked once. Then twice. And then—

SMACK!

Her palm collided with Ralph's face so fast that even his wolf instincts couldn't save him. The impact sent him stumbling backward, landing flat on his rear with a dramatic thud. "Ow! Hey!" Ralph cried, cradling his cheek. "What was that for?!"

The cheetah's expression twisted in disgust as she wiped her hand on her pants. "Don't touch me. And don't call me my lady."

"Okay, okay! It was a joke!" Ralph whined, groaning as he pulled himself back to his feet. "You really need to work on your sense of humor. It's very... lacking."

"Leave me alone and mind your business," she growled, turning sharply on her heel. Her movements were so quick and fluid that Ralph felt like he was watching a storm on legs.

"Wait, hold on!" Ralph called after her, jogging to keep up. "You're seriously walking into that zone? The Sentinel sector?"

"Stop following me."

"I'm not following you—I'm warning you! Big difference," Ralph argued, his voice taking on a mock-authoritative tone. "Look, if you go in there, you'll get caught. Trust me. I've tried."

"Go away."

Ralph groaned loudly, throwing his head back. "Why are you so stubborn?! If you get caught, you'll be scrubbing floors for months! Or worse—Alpha will drag you into one of his sermons about loyalty and obedience." He shivered theatrically. "Believe me, I've heard it enough times to know it by heart."

She ignored him, her pace unwavering as she approached the metal archway leading to the zone. A faint hum filled the air—the unmistakable sound of Sentinels nearby.

Ralph sighed, already predicting disaster. "Well, don't say I didn't warn you!"

Just as she stepped beneath the arch, the hum shifted into something more ominous: the heavy thud of Sentinel footsteps, growing louder by the second.

The cheetah froze.

Ralph's ears perked up. "Uh-oh."

A low rumble accompanied the approaching steps, vibrating the metal floors beneath their feet. Ralph darted his gaze around, scanning for a place to hide. "We're dead. We are so dead. Oh, wait!" His eyes landed on a ventilation shaft tucked into the wall. "There! Ventilation! It's our only shot."

The cheetah shot him a glare. "I'm not crawling through that."

"Do you see any other place to hide?" Ralph snapped, pointing dramatically at the walls. "You're not exactly spoiled for options here!"

The rumbling grew louder. The metallic stomp of the Sentinel sounded like thunder crashing through the hall.

"Fine!" she hissed.

Ralph grinned in triumph and darted toward the vent. "Ladies first—wait, no! I'll go first. I don't trust you not to leave me behind." He grabbed the edge of the vent, pulling himself up with a grunt. "Come on!"

The cheetah hesitated, eyeing the narrow opening with clear disdain.

"Hurry up!" Ralph hissed, his hand reaching back for her. "Unless you want to get turned into scrap metal!"

She groaned, glaring daggers at him before reluctantly grabbing his hand. "If you drop me—"

"Less threats, more climbing!" Ralph interrupted, pulling with all his might. For someone as slim and agile as the cheetah, she sure weighed more than he expected. "Almost there—GAH!" He nearly toppled backward as she finally scrambled into the vent.

They pressed themselves into the tight metal shaft just as the Sentinel's footsteps reached the archway. The ground shook, the Sentinel's massive frame casting a shadow that seeped into the vent's opening. Ralph held his breath, staring wide-eyed as the machine stomped past.

The noise faded slowly, each step echoing further away until silence settled over them.

The cheetah was the first to move. She slipped out of the vent with feline precision, landing softly on the floor below.

Ralph watched her, awe briefly flickering across his face. "Show-off," he muttered under his breath before attempting the same move.

He dropped down—

—and landed hard on his backside with a loud, echoing THUD.

"GAAH! My hips!" Ralph howled, rolling onto his side in exaggerated agony. "Why me?!"

The cheetah paused mid-step to glance back at him. For the first time, Ralph swore he saw her lips twitch—just barely—as if fighting back a smirk.

"Are you done?" she deadpanned.

Ralph groaned dramatically, sitting up with a wince. "Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up, speedy. Some of us aren't built like gravity-defying gymnasts."

She turned away, resuming her path down the hall.

"Hey, wait!" Ralph called after her, scrambling to his feet. He jogged to catch up, stepping in front of her. "Listen. You're good—I'll give you that. But you can't do this alone. You need someone like me. Someone who knows this place inside and out."

She raised an eyebrow. "And why would I trust you?"

Ralph's confident grin faltered. For a moment, he was quiet. Then, softly, he said, "Because no one else believes in me."

The cheetah tilted her head slightly, watching him.

"They all think I'm crazy for wanting to leave," Ralph continued, his tone unusually serious
