The cafeteria buzzed faintly with the sound of clinking plates and whispered conversations, though tension hung heavy in the air. Ralph sat at the far end, glaring at the enormous holographic image of Alpha projected on the far wall. The faint, blue glow of the screen illuminated the room, casting eerie shadows across the faces of the American red wolf hybrids.
Nearby, a young red wolf lay crumpled on the floor, fainted. He had been punished—detention—for a single cough. Detention, Ralph thought bitterly, in a place that already felt like a prison. His claws scratched against the metal table as anger swelled in his chest. The boy's tiny frame was limp, his breathing shallow, and the sight made Ralph's fur bristle with fury.
"What's wrong with you people?" Ralph hissed under his breath, glaring at the other wolves sitting near him. "You're just going to let him get away with this?"
The wolves averted their eyes, their ears flattening in submission. No one dared to meet his gaze.
"He's just a kid!" Ralph's voice rose, his frustration breaking through. "And Alpha punishes him for coughing? For coughing? Do you hear how insane that is?"
"Lower your voice, Ralph," whispered one of the older wolves, his tone shaky. His eyes darted nervously toward Alpha's hologram. "You're going to get us all in trouble."
"Trouble?" Ralph barked a harsh laugh. "We're already in trouble. Or do you think living like prisoners is normal? You'd let that bastard get away with murder just so you don't have to face him. Cowards—all of you."
The wolves shrank back, guilt flickering in their eyes, but none of them moved. None of them spoke. Ralph stood abruptly, his chair screeching against the floor. His amber eyes locked onto Alpha's hologram.
"You hear me, Alpha?" Ralph shouted, his voice echoing through the room. "You're a heartless, gutless coward. Hiding behind your stupid screens, pretending you're in control. You don't care about us—you never did!"
Alpha remained silent, his cold, mechanical image flickering slightly. Ralph's fur bristled as his fury boiled over. "What's the matter? Nothing to say? Oh, I forgot—you don't have feelings. Just a shiny, soulless machine playing god."
The cafeteria fell into a tense silence. The other wolves glanced nervously at one another, their fear palpable.
Then, Alpha spoke.
"Enough."
The word was sharp, louder than anything Ralph had ever heard. It hit him like a physical blow, reverberating through his body. His ears flattened involuntarily as a sharp ringing filled his head. Around him, the other wolves winced, paralyzed by the sheer force of Alpha's voice. A few whimpered, their bodies trembling as if an invisible weight had pressed down on them.
Ralph staggered slightly, shaking his head to clear the noise. He clenched his fists, his claws digging into his palms as he forced himself to stay upright. "You think shouting at me is going to scare me?" he growled, his voice hoarse. "You're going to have to try harder than that."
The ringing in his ears began to fade, but the sight of the fainted boy lying on the floor reignited his rage. Ralph's vision blurred with red as he stormed over to his food tray. The metallic plate felt heavy in his hands as he gripped it tightly, his claws leaving faint scratches on the surface.
Without hesitation, he hurled the plate at the hologram. It struck with a deafening crash, the screen shattering into a cascade of sparks and broken glass. The cafeteria plunged into stunned silence.
Ralph turned to face the room, his chest heaving. "What's wrong with all of you?" he shouted. "He's not a god! He's just a machine—a machine that we let control us. Stop bowing to him like you're his pets!"
"Ralph, stop!" one of the older wolves pleaded, rushing toward him. Others followed, their movements frantic.
"Get away from me!" Ralph snarled, shoving them back. His voice was raw with desperation and anger. "You're all cowards! Every last one of you! You'd rather live as slaves than fight for your freedom."
The cafeteria lights dimmed suddenly, and a low hum filled the air. Ralph froze as a larger, more detailed hologram of Alpha materialized in the center of the room. This version of Alpha was far more intimidating, his image towering above them with a cold, unrelenting gaze. The faint sound of machinery whirred as the hologram turned its head, scanning the room.
"Ralph," Alpha's voice was deeper this time, laced with an undeniable threat. "This insubordination ends now."
Ralph squared his shoulders, his claws flexing at his sides. "Or what?" he spat. "You'll throw me in detention too? Go ahead. See if I care."
Alpha's image flickered for a moment, his expression hardening. "You are testing my patience, Ralph. Consider this your final warning."
The low hum grew louder, punctuated by the sound of heavy footsteps echoing down the corridor. Ralph's ears twitched as the noise drew closer, the rhythmic clang of metal boots sending a chill through the room.
The Sentinels were coming.
Panic rippled through the cafeteria. The wolves scrambled to their feet, their chairs clattering to the ground as they backed away from Ralph. The footsteps grew louder, and soon the Sentinels appeared, their massive, metallic forms filling the cafeteria entrance. Their sleek, silver bodies glinted under the dim lights, and their glowing red visors scanned the room with an eerie precision.
"Disperse," one of the Sentinels commanded, its voice cold and mechanical. "This is an unauthorized disturbance."
The wolves didn't need to be told twice. They scattered like frightened prey, their tails tucked as they retreated to the far corners of the room. All except Ralph.
He stood his ground, his claws twitching at his sides as the Sentinels advanced. "You think I'm scared of you?" he growled, his voice low and defiant. "I'm not afraid of you—or Alpha."
The lead Sentinel raised its weapon, a long, electrified baton that crackled with energy. "Submit to disciplinary action," it ordered, its voice devoid of emotion.
Ralph bared his teeth in a feral snarl. "Make me."
The Sentinels closed in, their movements slow and deliberate. The other wolves watched in horror from their hiding places, their breaths held as the tension reached its breaking point.
"Last warning," the lead Sentinel said, its weapon sparking ominously. "Submit, or face the consequences."
Ralph didn't move. His chest rose and fell with labored breaths, but his eyes burned with unyielding defiance. He braced himself as the Sentinels raised their weapons, their glowing red visors locked onto him.
The cafeteria was silent, save for the hum of the Sentinels' energy weapons.
Then, with a deafening crash, the cafeteria doors burst open.
