Chereads / Path to Ascension: Beast Evolution / Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Forgotten Peaks

Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Forgotten Peaks

The trek from the Twilight Expanse to the Forgotten Peaks was grueling. The dense mist of the expanse gave way to sprawling forests, their ancient trees stretching toward the sky. The air grew cooler as they ascended, and the terrain became more treacherous.

Ryn led the way, his Mistborn Stalker moving with silent precision. Lyra followed close behind, Eclipse gliding above. The Nightshade Hare, perched on Ryn's shoulder, twitched its ears, sensing distant movements. The crystalline orb from the hidden chamber was securely tucked in Ryn's pack, but its faint energy occasionally pulsed, a reminder of its latent power.

"Are we sure about this?" Lyra asked, breaking the silence. "The Forgotten Peaks aren't exactly welcoming, and the Guild won't stop hunting us."

Ryn glanced back, determination in his eyes. "If we want answers, we need to keep pushing forward. The Peaks are our best chance."

...

The Peaks were a range of jagged mountains cloaked in mist and legends. Few dared to venture there, as the region was rumored to be home to powerful, untamed beasts and ancient ruins protected by natural and magical barriers.

As they approached the base of the mountains, the forest thinned, replaced by rocky terrain and chilling winds. Ryn's ability activated, offering fragmented insights about their surroundings.

...

Region: Forgotten Peaks

Notable Features: High-energy zones, ancient ruins, rare beast sightings.

Warning: Increased risk of instability and territorial aggression.

...

"It's like the land itself doesn't want us here," Lyra muttered as they climbed a steep incline.

Ryn nodded. "It's not just the land. This place is full of energy—wild and uncontrolled. It's no wonder beasts here grow stronger."

...

Their ascent was interrupted by a piercing screech that echoed across the mountains. Eclipse immediately took to the skies, scanning for the source.

From above, a massive, winged creature descended—a gryphon-like beast with razor-sharp talons and feathers that shimmered like molten gold.

...

Entity: Auric Stormclaw

Rank: Rare Elite

Abilities: Wind Manipulation, Lightning Surge, Enhanced Agility

Weakness: Ground-based immobilization techniques.

...

The beast circled them, its eyes glowing with predatory intent.

"This isn't good," Lyra said, her hand tightening around Eclipse's leash.

"It's testing us," Ryn replied. "We either stand our ground or become its next meal."

The Auric Stormclaw swooped down, its talons sparking with electricity.

"Blind it, Eclipse!" Lyra commanded.

Eclipse unleashed a flash of light, causing the gryphon to veer off course. The Mistborn Stalker leapt into action, its claws glowing with an ethereal light as it slashed at the gryphon's wing.

"Ryn, your hare—anchor it!" Lyra shouted.

The Nightshade Hare leapt from Ryn's shoulder, its shadowy tendrils wrapping around the gryphon's legs and pulling it toward the ground. The beast roared, struggling against the binding.

"Stalker, aim for its chest!" Ryn commanded.

The Mistborn Stalker lunged, its claws piercing the gryphon's armored feathers. The Auric Stormclaw let out a final cry before retreating, its wings carrying it back into the misty skies.

"Is it gone?" Lyra asked, breathing heavily.

"For now," Ryn replied. "But it's not the last challenge we'll face here."

...

After hours of climbing, they reached a plateau where the remnants of an ancient structure stood. Stone pillars etched with runes were scattered across the area, and the air buzzed with residual energy.

Ryn approached one of the pillars, his ability flaring to life.

...

Structure: Relic of the Ancients

Purpose: Evolution Chamber Prototype

Energy Source: Core of Binding-compatible.

...

"This was an evolution chamber," Ryn said, his voice filled with awe.

Lyra examined the carvings. "But it's ancient. How could they have known about evolution paths back then?"

Ryn shook his head. "I don't know, but this confirms something—the Core of Binding wasn't just made to stabilize energy. It was part of a system designed to push beasts beyond their limits."

As they explored, the orb in Ryn's pack began to pulse more intensely. He pulled it out, and its light resonated with the runes on the pillars, causing them to glow faintly.

Lyra stepped back. "Is that supposed to happen?"

Before Ryn could answer, the ground beneath them trembled, and a low growl echoed from within the ruins.

...

From the shadows of the ruins emerged a beast unlike anything they had seen before. Its body was sleek and feline, with fur that shimmered like starlight. Runes glowed faintly on its sides, and its eyes burned with an intense blue flame.

...

Entity: Starbound Sentinel

Rank: Legendary Guardian

Abilities: Astral Projection, Energy Absorption, Ranged Rune Attacks

Weakness: Overloading its internal energy reserves.

...

The Sentinel regarded them with a cold, calculating gaze, its movements deliberate and precise.

"This is bad," Lyra said, her voice trembling.

"It's not attacking yet," Ryn observed. "It's waiting—for what, I don't know."

The orb in Ryn's hand pulsed again, and the Sentinel's gaze locked onto it. A low growl rumbled in its throat as it crouched, ready to pounce.

"Whatever it's guarding, it thinks we're here to take it," Ryn said.

"And aren't we?" Lyra countered.

"We'll deal with that later. Right now, we need to survive," Ryn replied, his eyes narrowing.

...

The Sentinel struck first, releasing a barrage of energy beams from the runes on its sides. Ryn and Lyra dove for cover as the blasts obliterated the stone pillars behind them.

"Eclipse, distract it!" Lyra commanded.

Eclipse soared into the air, its light flaring to draw the Sentinel's attention. The Mistborn Stalker moved swiftly, darting between the rubble to strike at the Sentinel's legs.

The beast countered with a swipe of its claws, sending the Stalker sprawling. Ryn's ability activated, revealing a critical insight.

...

Tactic: Force an overload by channeling energy back into its runes.

...

"Lyra, we need to redirect its energy into the ruins!" Ryn shouted.

Lyra nodded, directing the Nightshade Hare to fire a concentrated shadow beam at one of the glowing pillars. The pillar absorbed the energy, redirecting it toward the Sentinel.

The beast roared as the redirected energy struck its runes, causing them to flicker and dim.

"Keep it up!" Ryn yelled, commanding the Mistborn Stalker to attack the Sentinel's exposed flank.

Finally, the Sentinel let out a final, pained growl before collapsing, its body dissolving into motes of starlight.

...

As the dust settled, the ruins pulsed with energy, and a hidden chamber beneath the plateau revealed itself. Ryn and Lyra exchanged a glance before stepping inside.

The chamber was small but filled with ancient carvings and a pedestal holding another crystalline orb, this one glowing with a deep purple light.

...

Artifact: Core of Ascension

Purpose: Amplifies evolution potential, unlocking hidden abilities.

...

Lyra stared at the orb in awe. "If the Guild knew about this..."

"They'd do whatever it takes to control it," Ryn finished.

He carefully picked up the Core of Ascension, its energy resonating with the Core of Binding in his pack. A sense of purpose filled him as he turned to Lyra.

"This is just the beginning," he said. "If we want to understand what's happening, we need to uncover every secret this world is hiding."

Lyra nodded. "Then let's keep moving. Together."
