Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Mist

The morning air was crisp as the group moved away from the Frostspire Caverns, their breaths visible in the cold. The Abyssal Frostfang walked proudly beside Ryn, its frosty aura shimmering in the pale sunlight. At Lyra's side, her Nightshade Hare hopped gracefully, its glowing eyes scanning the surroundings, while the Mistborn Stalker prowled with silent vigilance, ever alert for threats.

"You know," Lyra began, breaking the silence, "that guy, Kael... he wasn't just some rogue tamer. The Obsidian Order doesn't send their members lightly. Whatever they're after, it's big."

Ryn nodded, his hand brushing against Frostfang's cool fur. "They're after the Core of Dominion, the same as us. But their reasons..." He trailed off, his thoughts clouded with unease.

Lyra tilted her head. "You don't think they're just power-hungry maniacs?"

Ryn hesitated. "Maybe, but Kael's words—'forces beyond your understanding'—felt more like a warning than a threat. There's more to this than we know."

...

Their path led them to Emberfall Outpost, a bustling hub where tamers, merchants, and adventurers converged. The outpost served as a gateway to the untamed wilds and a haven for those seeking resources, challenges, or fame.

Massive stone walls encircled the settlement, their surfaces adorned with colorful banners representing various guilds. At the heart of the outpost stood the Guild Hall, a towering structure alive with activity.

"We should check in with the guild," Lyra suggested as they passed through the gates. "They might have information about Kael or the Core."

Ryn agreed, his expression thoughtful. The Guild Hall was more than a central hub for tamers; it was a place of knowledge and competition, where tamers measured their standing and shared insights.

Inside, the hall buzzed with life. Tamers of all ranks gathered around quest boards, discussing contracts and displaying their beasts. The walls were lined with trophies: framed contracts of legendary creatures, ancient artifacts, and murals depicting great battles.

Ryn approached the receptionist, a sharp-eyed woman wearing the guild's badge. "I need information about a group called the Obsidian Order," he said.

The woman's expression darkened. "The Obsidian Order... They've been making waves recently. Rogue tamers with dangerous ideals. The guild has flagged them as a major threat, but they're hard to track."

"What do they want?" Ryn pressed.

The receptionist hesitated. "Rumors suggest they're after something called the Core of Dominion. If it's real, it could shift the balance of power in the taming world."

Lyra crossed her arms. "So, they're trying to play gods with beasts. Great."

The receptionist nodded. "If you're going up against them, be careful. They don't play fair."

...

After leaving the Guild Hall, Ryn and Lyra sat by a fountain in the town square, the distant hum of the outpost creating a backdrop to their discussion.

"The Frostspire Caverns were just one step," Ryn said. "If the Obsidian Order is after the Core, we need to stay ahead of them. But we're low on resources, and Frostfang needs time to adapt to its evolution."

Lyra nodded, her expression serious. "We should split up for now."

Ryn blinked, caught off guard. "What?"

Lyra sighed. "Look, I hate to admit it, but you're better at figuring out evolution paths and strategies. I'm better at gathering intel and dealing with people. If I dig into the Order's movements, it'll give us an edge."

Ryn frowned, his instincts screaming against the idea. "It's risky. What if they find you?"

Lyra smirked. "Please. You're not the only one who can handle themselves. Besides, we'll cover more ground this way."

After a long pause, Ryn relented. "Fine. But stay in contact. If anything happens—"

Lyra waved him off. "Yeah, yeah, I know. Don't worry, hero. I'll be fine."

...

With Lyra heading east to investigate the Order's movements, Ryn focused on their next lead: the Shrouded Glade, a site rumored to hold rare resources and ancient ruins.

The Guild's quest board offered the perfect opportunity:

...

Quest: Investigate the Shrouded Glade

Details: Unusual energy signatures detected. Possible rare resources or ancient ruins.

Reward: 10,000 gold coins, resource bundle.

Warning: High danger level.

...

"The Shrouded Glade..." Ryn murmured, tracing the parchment with his finger. His ability flared, revealing faint glowing paths that crisscrossed the area—evidence of dormant power.

"It's dangerous," he said to Frostfang, "but it's our best lead."

...

The journey to the glade was arduous. Dense forest gave way to a mist-laden expanse where sunlight barely pierced the canopy. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and faintly sweet flowers, yet an undercurrent of menace hung heavy.

Frostfang's ears twitched, and the Mistborn Stalker growled low, sensing the danger ahead.

Ryn's ability flared briefly, revealing faint outlines of dormant beasts hidden in the mist.

...

Tactic Identified: Avoid direct confrontation. Navigate through using Frostfang's sensory abilities.

...

"Frostfang, lead the way," Ryn whispered. The beast moved with precision, its frosty aura cutting a small path through the mist.

As they ventured deeper, the glade's true nature began to reveal itself. Ancient stone pillars jutted from the ground, etched with glowing runes.

"This must be it," Ryn muttered, awe evident in his voice. "A remnant of an ancient taming civilization."

His admiration was short-lived. The ground trembled, and from the mist emerged a massive beast, its form shifting like liquid shadow.

...

Entity: Mistveil Terror

Rank: Mid-tier Guardian Beast

Abilities: Mistform, Paralytic Screech, Camouflage

...

The Mistveil Terror roared, dissolving into the mist before reappearing closer. Its glowing eyes locked onto Ryn with predatory intent.

"Frostfang, defensive stance!" Ryn commanded.

The Frostfang growled, its icy breath forming a protective barrier. The Mistborn Stalker circled the Terror, seeking an opening.

The Terror let out a piercing screech, freezing Frostfang in place momentarily.

"Shake it off, Frostfang!" Ryn yelled, his voice cutting through the oppressive fear.

The Frostfang's eyes glowed brighter, and it lunged forward with Ice Fang Strike, catching the Terror mid-lunge. The beast recoiled, its form flickering.

"Stalker, now!"

The Mistborn Stalker leapt onto the Terror, its claws ripping through the unstable shadow. With a final roar, the Terror dissolved, leaving behind a shimmering crystal.

...

Ryn picked up the crystal, its cold surface humming with energy.

...

Entity: Mistcore Crystal

Function: Unlocks hidden evolution paths tied to mist or stealth attributes.

...

"This will be useful," Ryn murmured, turning the crystal over in his hand.

As he prepared to leave, his ability flared once more, revealing a hidden doorway among the ruins.

"Looks like there's more to this place," he said, stepping forward with Frostfang and the Stalker close behind.
