CHAPTER ONE
THE DARK SECRET IN THE BASEMENT
The old wooden stairs creaked beneath my feet as I made my way down to the basement. I had always been curious about what my stepmother, Sarah, did down here at night. She would often sneak down after dinner, claiming she needed to do some laundry or fetch something from storage. But I knew better. I had heard the whispers.
At first, I thought it was just the house settling. The old Victorian mansion had been in our family for generations, and it was bound to make some strange noises. But as the nights went by, the whispers grew louder. It sounded like Sarah was talking to someone, but I never saw anyone else around.
I reached the bottom of the stairs and fumbled for the light switch. The dim bulb flickered to life, casting eerie shadows on the walls. I took a deep breath and began to make my way deeper into the basement.
The air was thick with the smell of mold and decay. Cobwebs clung to the corners of the room, and old boxes and trunks were stacked haphazardly against the walls. I navigated through the clutter, my heart pounding in my chest.
As I turned a corner, I saw Sarah standing in front of a large symbol etched into the wall. It looked like something out of a horror movie - twisted lines and curves that seemed to shift and writhe in the dim light. Sarah was chanting and swaying back and forth, her eyes closed in ecstasy.
I froze, my heart racing with fear. What was she doing? Who was she talking to? I took a step back, trying not to make a sound. But it was too late. Sarah's eyes snapped open, and she turned to face me.
For a moment, we just stared at each other. Then, Sarah's face twisted into a cruel smile. "Welcome," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "I've been waiting for you."
As she spoke, the symbol on the wall began to glow with a faint, otherworldly light. I felt a presence behind me, and I turned to see a dark figure taking shape. It was tall and gaunt, with glowing eyes that seemed to bore into my soul.
I tried to run, but my feet felt heavy. Sarah's smile grew wider, and she began to chant again. The figure started moving towards me, its eyes fixed on me with an unspeakable hunger.
I managed to break free and ran back upstairs, not stopping until I was out of the house. I didn't know where I was going, but I knew I had to get away.
I've been staying with friends ever since, trying to make sense of what I saw that night. But the more I think about it, the more questions I have. What was Sarah summoning? What did she want with me? And what's going to happen next?
As I sit here, writing this, I can feel eyes on me. I know I'm not safe. Sarah's still out there, waiting for me. And I know she'll stop at nothing to get what she wants.
