Chapter 22 - The Academy

The first thing that struck Jared and Caroline as they entered the City of Lilies was - it was beautiful.

It's a beautiful, beautiful, exquisite city.

  That's Caroline's adjective.

As the most gorgeous city in the most inhabitable land of San Marino Empire, Lily City shows its unique delicacy and elegance, the streets are paved with white marble, and on both sides there are more than one person high, which looks like the shape of budding flowers carved from jade, from which there are clear water springs, which flow down the watercourses on both sides, and converge into a beautiful stream. Even the edge of the city wall used for defense, also carved with the shape of flowers, looks a little flashy. However, Lily City lives up to its name as it is a city that has a strong connection with flowers wherever it goes.

"This is the City of Lilies."

Upon entering the city, even Tawana's face, which had been a bit gloomy, brightened up a lot. With a sweet smile, she introduced the two.

"This is the city founded by our esteemed Queen, along with the five great Chanting Lords, and the center of the San Marino Empire."

  "I think it's nice here."

(I,too, like it here very much.)

Looking out at the scenery, Jared and Caroline couldn't help but feel a bit mesmerized. Although life in Glory City was good, it was a city of merchants, filled with too much interest and mutual exploitation. What's more, they were not used to the seemingly never-ending marketplace, where the streets were always filled with a tense, hurried atmosphere. But here, in Lily City, there was no one walking as fast as in Glory City, and there was no noisy bazaar, everything was quiet and peaceful. It would be great to live here.

However, the two of them only thought about it for a while, but they didn't really want to implement it. Not to mention the fact that they didn't have any money, they couldn't possibly let Tawana live alone in Glory City.

The carriage stopped, and then Tawana excitedly opened the door and jumped out. Then she turned to the two men and gave them a happy smile, then she pulled back her skirts and gave them a salute.

"Brother Jared, Sister Caroline, this is the Academy! Welcome!"

"We're just your guardians. Isn't this too grand?"

Jared subconsciously looked around, and luckily, there didn't seem to be anyone at the front door. The gate was made entirely of white marble, beautifully carved with lilies. It was elegant and graceful. After the salute, Tawana walked up to the two of them and shook her head slightly.

"It's not like that... Teachers say that Guardians are wizards' best helpers, friends and companions. And ..."

  Here, Tawana's expression slumped again.

"Right now, the only people I can rely on are my brother and sister."

  ("Little Tawana, don't worry.)

Caroline stepped forward and gently squeezed Tawana's shoulder before taking her tenderly into her arms.

(We'll protect you, you don't have to worry about anything.)

  "... Well!!!"

Perhaps she was embarrassed to be in public. Tawana blushed and nodded in response. Just then, a cheerful, lively voice appeared behind her.

"Tawana! You're back? You're really back?!"

"Ah, is that voice ... Pella?"

Tawana hurriedly turned around, patted her cheeks, and then looked towards a certain figure that had appeared at the entrance of the academy and was running towards here. And that small figure was just like this running wildly, and then head first into Tawana's already open embrace in the middle." Tawana ...! I missed you so much, I missed you so much, it's been a whole Season of Sprouting since I've seen you, and you've finally come back. It's so good that you've finally come back. ..."

The young girl named Perla raised her head and then naturally looked behind Tawana. When she saw Jared and Caroline, her eyes widened in surprise and she immediately jumped out of Tawana's embrace. She poked her tongue out at them in embarrassment. Then she whispered to Tawana and asked, "Tawana, who are these two people? New students?"

It was no wonder that the young girl had such a misunderstanding, because neither Jared nor Caroline were wearing the trademark leather armor or other protective gear of warriors of this era, but rather just two sets of ordinary clothing. Instead, they wore two sets of ordinary clothes, and their hands were empty, with no weapons in sight. It's hard to associate them with warriors. And with Caroline wearing a tight-fitting luxury gown and Jared wearing an ordinary outfit similar to what a young nobleman would wear on a trip, it's no wonder that the young woman named Pella mistook them for new students.

  "Guess what?"

Perhaps it was because she had seen her good friend, Tawana actually made a rare joke and asked in return. Perla, on the other hand, stared at them for a moment, then shook her head. At this time, Tawana was like a victor quietly lying in Perla's ear and said to her: "In fact, brother Jared and sister Caroline are my guardians."

"Oh, so this is your ... hey---!!!"

Perla's eyes widened in surprise, pointing at Jared and Caroline, her mouth wide open as she turned her head to look at Tawana, but looked as if she didn't know what to say.

"You you you you you you actually have a guardian?!"

  "Uh-huh."

Tawana looked up triumphantly, like a little adult.

  "I'm a full-fledged magical envoy now, so having a guardian shouldn't be a problem."

  "But, but ..."

Jared and Caroline couldn't help but smile as they watched the two bickering. They used to have days like that, playing and bickering with their friends. But with the discovery of their powers, those days were gone. Their friends were separated for various reasons, but only those who were the same as them and the same things remained with them. Now, looking at the scene in front of them, they seemed to have returned to the era of unrestrained memories, where there was no escape and no panic. Just then, a domineering voice came over.

  "Hey, girls, move over."

At the sound of the voice, Tawana and Perla immediately shut up, and they looked at the one who had made the noise with an expression that they didn't like him.

"Did you not hear me when I told you to get out of the way?"

A boy who looked to be about Tawana's age, but was dressed in a crisp white gown stood tall in front of them, and swept his gaze over the two of them with obvious disdain. Perla glared back in displeasure, keeping Tawana behind her." What's going on? Barney? Are you trying to bully Tawana again?"

"I don't have time for such poor brats."

The boy's boyish face showed a camouflaged maturity and depth that was truly revolting to look at.

Caroline stepped forward and gently pulled Tawana behind her. Jared, meanwhile, stood expressionless, watching the little brat.

"Barney, you're just the son of a rich man. What's the big deal?"

  Perla is clearly not convinced.

"Who doesn't know your father ..."

However, before she could finish her sentence, Jared suddenly grabbed her hand and pulled Perla back a few steps. At this moment, in the position where Perla was standing, there was a man dressed in black with an ice-cold face. He looked at Perla coldly, and the dagger in his hand was shining brightly.

"No one is allowed to speak ill of His Lordship."

He swept an expressionless glance at Barney, who was behind him, looking smug.

"It's too much to sneak up on a girl."

Jared suddenly spoke, looking up at the man in black with icy eyes.

"And, because of her words, you want her dead?"

"No one is allowed to disrespect His Lordship, on pain of death."

  "Arrogance."

Jared's voice was not loud, but it was clear enough for everyone to hear. The man in black's eyes narrowed as he stared menacingly at Jared.

"What did you say? A little ghost?"

"In any case, it's time for this to end."

Jared told Perla to go over to Caroline's side, then looked over at the man in black and said.

"It is true that this girl has insulted a human being, but I believe that your earlier threat has taught her enough. Do you still want to do it now?"

"She must apologize to the young master and the master!"

The man in black said every word.

  "There's no need for that."

  Jared gestures toward Caroline.

"I said this should end here."

  "Then, I'll make her apologize!!!"

As soon as the words left his mouth, the figure of the man in black suddenly disappeared, while Jared shrugged his shoulders and sighed helplessly .

Almost as soon as the man disappeared, the umbrella in Caroline's hand closed with a snap and quickly transformed into a thin sword. She shifted her pace in an elegant and graceful manner, moving in front of Pella and Tawana in a single glance. Then the sword slid out and tinkled twice. With a flick of her wrist, Caroline swung the sword forward instead of backing away. In an instant, the sword turned into a long whip and swept into the empty air in front of her, and then quickly retracted. At this moment, the man in black rolled to the ground in a state of disarray. He clenched his teeth, his wrist was dripping blood, and his original shiny dagger had disappeared to an unknown place.

When a weapon is discharged, there must be blood.

Caroline had already withdrawn her fine sword, elegantly opened her umbrella, and resumed the gentle and cultured style of the noble lady just now. It was as if the flash of lightning just now was just a dream, an unreal phantom.

  "... Young master, let's go!"

Noticing that more and more people were watching, the man in black clenched his teeth, didn't even dare to look at Caroline half an eye again, and just turned around and left. The cocky little kid's face also turned a shade of green and a shade of red, he reddened his face, glaring fiercely at Caroline. But Caroline did not even look at him, this makes this kid is very embarrassed, so he can only be angry, stomped his feet, turned around and disappeared in the crowd.

"I have to reevaluate. This place looks like it's out of control."

  Jared lowered his environment score.

"Well, Barney's been a bully a couple times! He's so rich that he doesn't give a damn about anyone. Tawana has been bullied by him several times, sister, you've done a great job! You're really worthy of being Tawana's guardian, it looks like there's no problem leaving Tawana in your hands!" Pera was so proud of herself, but Tawana's face was red as she pulled on Pera's sleeve and shook it, as if she didn't want her to tell her about her stinky past at the academy.

  "Well? Caroline?"

Jared walked over to Caroline's side and asked in a low voice.

(I hurt his ligaments. He won't be able to hold a weapon for at least three months.)

Caroline smiled slightly, obviously very pleased with herself. There wasn't an ounce of hesitation or regret, after all, the moment the weapon was discharged, they'd already thrown all their emotions out the window. Since the man had tried to attack Tawana and her best friend right under their noses, Jared and Caroline were not going to be soft.

  "What the hell happened!"

When this kind of dispute occurs, naturally, no one will be indifferent, soon, a middle-aged woman with a serious face came out.

Sitting in the Academy's confessional, none of the four men apparently had any intention of confessing.

"Teacher, it's Barney. He's a bully! Why are you lecturing us?"

In the face of this middle-aged woman with a face so cold it was almost like a stone statue, Perla was not the least bit frightened, and for her age, she could be considered a woman of honor.

"But you are the ones who injured the people in front of the academy! Don't you realize what this will do to the academy?!"

  "I'm terribly sorry."

Since Caroline couldn't talk, Jared had to step in.

"We just came here, we didn't know this would happen. Besides, we had no choice, so I hope you'll understand."

"Hmph, are you the guardians of Tawana?"

The middle-aged woman swept a quick glance at Jared and Caroline and shook her head.

"Really, it's just childish behavior. A magical envoy, not a guardian. Don't you know that guardians need to register at the academy?"

"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry, teacher!"

Tavana was obviously terrified of the middle-aged woman, and she kept her head down, not daring to say more than a word.

"I-I was going to bring my brother and sister to register, but I didn't expect to meet Barney at the school gate he ..."

  "Stop it."

The middle-aged woman waved her hand impatiently .

"You should know, Tawana Kanarot. It is not permissible to start trouble without authorization in the academy, and don't you know that mistakes made by guardians are also recorded in the wizard's file?"

  "... is very sorry..."

  "There's nothing to apologize for."

The middle-aged woman didn't seem to appreciate it, but then her tone changed.

"However, a Guardian who is not registered at the Academy is not a Guardian recognized by the Academy. And if the guardian makes any mistakes before the academy recognizes them, it has nothing to do with the magician."

  "You mean ...!"

Perla raised her head, her eyes sparkling. But the middle-aged woman didn't even look at them halfway, but turned her back on the crowd and looked out the window.

"So, hurry up and register! If anything happens after that! You'll be in big trouble!"
