Chapter 1: The Return
Reginald "Reg" Thompson, CEO of Thompson Industries, stood before the grand, wrought-iron gates of his family's estate, a mix of emotions swirling within him. It had been years since he'd set foot in this place, but his father's sudden passing had brought him back to confront the memories and demons he'd left behind.
As he stepped out of his sleek, black sedan, the crunch of gravel beneath his feet echoed through the stillness. The sprawling mansion loomed before him, its stone façade weathered to a warm, honey-brown. Reg's gaze wandered to the manicured lawns, the vibrant gardens, and the sparkling fountain, all of which seemed frozen in time.
With a deep breath, Reg steeled himself and entered the mansion. The familiar creak of the heavy wooden door, the soft glow of the chandelier, and the faint scent of polished wood and fresh flowers enveloped him, transporting him back to a time when life was simpler.
As he stepped into the foyer, a figure emerged from the shadows. It was Emma, his childhood maid, her warm smile a beacon of comfort in the midst of his grief. Her eyes, though, held a hint of sadness, and Reg sensed that she, too, was struggling to come to terms with the loss of his father.
"Welcome home, Reg," Emma said, her voice soft and soothing. "I'm so sorry about your father. He was a good man."
Reg's throat constricted as he nodded, feeling a lump form. He hadn't expected the wave of emotions that washed over him as he faced Emma and the memories she represented.
