I couldn't think of what to do. I sat close to dêad Annie biting my fingers for some minutes until my phone rang. I couldn't even pick it up because I was scared. Shivering, quivering, and couldn't find my voice. In summary, I was numb. I managed to pick it up after the third ring.
"He..llo"
"Hey beautiful, this is Cal"
I just didn't know when I burst into tears. I cried uncontrollably into the phone.
"Hey, what's up? What happened?"
"She's dëad"
"Who?"
"Annie… I kïlled her. She's gone"
There were a few minutes of silence.
"I'll be there in a few minutes with an ambulance. Just stay where you are"
"I…" Before I could conclude my statement, he dropped the call. I wanted to tell him how scared I was. I wanted to stay on the phone with him. I wanted to call him back so badly but I also wanted to turn back the hands of time. At that moment, so many thoughts ran through my mind. "Run away" my mind kept advising me and I thought of following my instincts. I stood up and was about to leave when she pulled my hands. Annie pulled my hands, I was shocked to death, I thought the dëad had come to take me along with it.
"You bïtch! You want to run away?"
I screamed immediately and ran out of the room and there was Cal, he was just outside the door and I found myself in his arms, he hugged me tight and that was just exactly what I needed at that moment.
"She is in there, she held my hands, she…" I ran my mouth like a scared baby girl.
"Calm down, Sidney. Calm down!" he calmed me down and made me breathe in and out uncountable times to catch my breath. He made me sit by the passage and went into the room.
I didn't know what went on there but I was hearing his voice, didn't quite get what he was saying and who he was talking to.
In a few more seconds I heard the siren of an ambulance and in another few seconds, I saw two of the health workers approaching me with so much urgency.
"Where is the patient?"
I only gestured at my room and they rushed in. In less than a minute, the two of them lifted Annie and took her out of the room and the house.
I just sat in the exact position Cal had kept me, numb.
Cal followed after them, he gave me his hands, I took them and he lifted me. I was still sobbing, he wiped my tears.
"Let's follow them to the hospital, she's not dëad," he said casually.
I burst into tears again and he just took my hands and pulled me out of the house and into his car.
While he drove, one hand on the steering and one hand on my laps. That was the exact treatment I needed at the moment and he kept looking at me and smiling as I sniffed like a crybaby. Why was he smiling? In such a terrible situation. What kind of human is this with no stable emotion?
"What exactly happened between you both?"
"We had an argument and I wanted to leave, she held me and I pushed her away and she landed in that state you met her"
"What was the argument about? I thought you were also recovering?"
"She accused me of trying to stëal her man"
"Her man?"
"Yes."
"What relationship do you have with her man?"
I couldn't help but give him a really stern look.
"What?" he asked innocently.
"I guess if she wakes up and finds out we are both together, she might dië again"
Cal gave a wry laugh, "What do you mean"
"She accused me of trying to steal you"
"Steal me?
"Yes"
"When did I become an object to be stolen"
"You tell me"
He laughs again and parks the car.
"I don't know why she would say that but I have absolutely nothing to do with her, I have met her just once during Jake's birthday party and we only exchanged pleasantries. Nothing more"
"Why are you explaining?"
"I… I am explaining… oh Jeez! I am in awe!" he smiled, "Would you have liked it if I had something to do with her"
"Of course not"
"That settles it" he starts the car and continues driving and it was awkwardly silent all through the rest of the ride"
