Chereads / Chained Freedom / Chapter 12 - Torturer

Chapter 12 - Torturer

It's been three days... since my imprisonment. Siting in my cold cell, I don't know whether it's day or night... down in this underground prison, it's hard to tell. All I can do is count. My cell block is quiet, though the smell of rotting corpses pierce into my nose.

My stomach growls, eagerly awaiting a meal. They haven't fed me and don't seem on planing too. That's fine.

Laying on my metal bed, I try to get some sleep. It's hard sleeping... not because of the cold, hard metal on my skin. I cant sleep because all I can think about is my friend.

Click. The door to my cell opens. A large man wearing a dark hood steps in, carrying a large bag. A guard follows behind him, pushing a small wooden table, which is stained with dried blood. I have an idea of what's about to happen...

The guard pushes the table to the middle of the cell. The large man places his dirty bag on it, and waits. The guard leaves with a grim expression.

The four-starred man enters the room, the stars glistening on his red uniform. He looks at me, with no particular expression.

"What happened on the island?" He asks, forwardly.

I look at him surprised. "Wait you... didn't know? Well, let me tell you, it was utter hell in that facility. I mean really, we where treated worse than shit. Not fun times... but then the fat Owner got too greedy! Haha the pig ended up biting off more than he could chew!" I explain, sarcastically.

Of course I could just tell them the whole story, but whose to say they won't kill me after I do? My life means nothing to them, just like Mavro's meant nothing.

Glaring at me, he sighs and gestures for the large man to empty his bag. The man hurriedly empty's it onto the table, all sorts of nasty devices fall out onto the table... all stained in blood. A small knife grabs my attention.

How unsanitary!

"Now tell me exactly what happened or... my friend here will do as he pleases." He says, coldly.

"Can't do it yourself?" I ask, mocking the man. He doesn't react, instead he walks out of the cell and gestures the large man to begin.

I won't simply allow myself to be tortured. But what can I do in this condition, against a man four times my size?

A candle flinkers on the table, my shadow dances in its weak light.

The prison trembles slightly, as If something moves below.

The Torturer doesn't tie me down to anything, perhaps because he knows my body is weak from starvation.

The Torturer stands over me, dwarfing me in size. Still, he doesn't compare to the Butcher... that monster.

The Torturer's eye's gleam dangerously through the holes of his dark hood. Picking up a pair of pliers, he walks towards me... or rather where he last saw me. I moved quickly, the second he took his eyes off me, I was gone. In the shadows of the small cell, the room is covered in shadows.

The Torturer's eyes search for me, he doesn't panic. Where can I go? The doors locked. He has the keys. The keys... he pats himself down, not finding them. Suddenly a cold sweat runs down his back.

He hurriedly runs the the door, his loud foot-steps echoing. Reaching the door, his eye's widen. The door... is still locked. Turning around quickly, he sees nothing... because his dead. A small knife pierced into his eye, penetrating the man's brain.

Standing over the large man's lifeless corpse, I sigh. Falling to the ground, suddenly feeling all my energy leave me.

"Damn... now what? My legs feel like noodles." I whisper to myself.

I didn't think this far ahead... I'd like to catch my prey... but I'd only be thrown back into my cell or worse.

The prison is large and has many guards patrolling. What do I do? What would Mavro do?

"To hell with plans, let's riot..." I whisper, chuckling.

Yeah, plans never go the way you want them too. Standing up I sneak out of my cell, using the Torturer's keys. Locking the door behind me.

The hall of my desolate cell block is dimly lit by lanterns. Taking one, I walk down the hall, passing several empty cells. All of which reek of rotting corpses.

Reaching the end of the cell block, I place the lantern down and continue up the the stairs, in the shadows. Careful of my step, I force my body to move.

There are strange sounds coming from bellow, down in the deep dark abyss.

I reach cell block six, it's empty. continuing up the stairs, I reach cell block five, it's littered with corpses. Is this a prison or a graveyard? I think to myself as I continue up, avoiding the gaze of guards. Their eyes are lifeless.

I reach cell block four and its empty, not of people... of hope. The prisoners have given up on freedom, completely. How nostalgic... they remind me of the men in the pits. What would Mavro do?

I walk in front of their cells with a lantern in hand.

"P-pathetic." I cough, then continue. "Is this all your worth? Lifeless animals. Don't you want more? Uhh, follow me and you'll have more." I say, feeling confident.

Their eyes widen. Yeah that's right.

"Bravo... that was an excellent speech." The four-starred man says, emotionlessly.

"Shit" My last words before being kicked in the ribs, luckily not the side that's still healing. Still... it hurts.

I don't waste a second, rolling into the shadows. Where is he...?

I'm answered as I'am brutality kicked into my stomach. Damn...

A loud thud echoes from above, distracting him for a moment. All it took was that one moment, for a small knife to fly straight into his eye. The man stumbles down, and I rush towards him to finish the job.

Although before I can, a familiar flintlock is pointed at my head. I try to dodge, but a bullet flies into my shoulder, forcing me to fall down.

The man laughs, his laugh is cold and humorless.

His laugh echoes, something stirs bellow; causing the underground prison to tremble. The four-starred man doesn't seem to care. His attention focused on me.

"How foolish of me to underestimate you... your as much of a threat as that girl..." He says, sombrely. Pointing his flintlock to my head, finger on the trigger.

His cold eyes look down at me, devoid of all light. A moment later, his eyes shine brightly as blue flames engulf the entire underground prison.

"Mavro...?"
