"Sir..."
Jack was spaced out. He had just taking the awakening test and learned about his soul. He had a weak innate rune, a simple fireball spell of the weakest rank [Bronze] and with the fact that he may be the only person to have every awakened without another rune slot it made him very cynical about his current situation. After 18 years of waiting to awaken and hoping to become the greatest Diver of humanity, his dreams were promptly crushed.
"Sir..."
As with every kid Jack dreamed of becoming a strong Diver who protected humanity from the horrors of the Windows. Most of this dream stemmed from watching his parents get ripped apart by a [Gold] ranked monster that appeared out of a Window that was failed multiple times.
"Sir!"
Jack's thoughts were thrown off and he jumped a little before he focusing on the lady in front of him. He was still in the process of getting his Diver license so that he could clear Windows.Â
"Sir, I need you to sign here and then you are all set to go."
Jack swiftly grabbed the pen and signed his name without reading anything else on the paper.
"Thank you sir, here is your complementary [Bronze] rank weapon rune. I wish you luck!"
'As if this is going to be able to help me.'
He saw clearly through her false enthusiasm and politely nodded before taking the rune with him and leaving the giant skyscraper that had two large letter's mounted on the front.
D.AÂ
Which is short for Diver's Association. They are a international organization that monitors all activity of the Diver's and coordinates with them in case of an emergency. Jack walked a little away from the building to the bus stop and while waiting pulled out his phone to browse DiveNet for the closest Window that he could challenge.
He figured that is wasn't even worth it to join a group since he had no chance of being any use, which made him decide to challenge a weak Window that he might have a chance of clearing, but ultimately he had already resigned himself to die in the Window.
After his parents died he was sent to a orphanage where they trained children to become Diver's and once they awakened they were kicked out and forced to fend for themselves.
So with Jack having no place to go he either cleared a Window by himself to claim all the rewards or die in the Window and save himself the humility of living on the streets.Â
The Window he settled on was a [Bronze] ranked Window called Slime Cave, since it was just a straight cave that led to boss and the monsters inside were simple slimes which are possible for strong un-awakened humans to kill.
The bus rolled up to the stop and opened the door. Jack boarded and sat on the bus until he reached his stop. When he was close to the Window he clicked the button on the wall that told the bus driver to stop at the next bus stop.
He swiped his Diver card on the bus meter and got off. The butterflies in his stomach felt like they were gonna burst out, but he had no choice and had to enter the Window. He had already paid the fee to enter and that had only left him with enough money to pay the bus fare, leaving him with no money to his name.
He walked up to the Window and stared at it. He had seen Window's on tv before, but he knew that the feeling of being near one was far different than that of just looking at one. The feeling that it gave off was ominous as though it should never be touched, but he knew that was what the Window wanted so that it could open and flood Earth with monsters.
Jack took a deep breath and resigned himself to fate before quickly entering the Window and making sure that he could not turn around with his tail between his legs.
When he stepped through it felt as if every part of his body disappeared and reappeared in the Window. To someone looking from the outside it would have just looked like he had vanished into thin air the moment he touched the Window.
Looking around he noticed the lack of light first, followed by the wet rock floor of the cave that was quiet slippery.Â
'I guess it's time to test out my trash innate rune.'Â
He immediately closed his eyes and activated [Lesser Fireball] and within a second the fireball appeared hovering just above his hand. It brightened up the cave and he was able to see a short distance in front of himself, enough as to make sure there were no slimes near him.Â
Testing out the skill he decided to throw it down the cave to see how fast and strong it was. He pulled his arm back and threw the fireball. It flew about as fast as he could sprint and when it hit the ground it had no effect on the rock and was like it had never existed.Â
"Great so not only is it insanely slow, it is also weaker than a punch."
All he could was stand still with a blank stare.
'So this is how it end's. Once you enter a Window the only way out is to defeat the boss and exit through the Window that appears after.'Â
His started to laugh with pain and eventually started to move and spoke again.
"Well, I better at least give the slimes hell before I die!"Â
His expression changed from a frown to a smile and he started to run like a mad man down the cave, continuously summoning [Lesser Fireball] and laughing.Â
Jacks mind had flipped a switch, his fight or flight had disappeared and all he could think about was how he knew that he was dead and he would at least kill a slime before he died. It didn't take long for his wish to come true either....
